Yet another game has sold out 2 weeks before kickoff... (I thought people said things like this wouldn't happen?)

http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/news/article/only-hospitality-left-for-west-ham-749445.aspx

The last 5 home games in a row sold out. Only two left after the West Ham game, Stoke on the last day of the season will sell out, the West Brom game perhaps won't, but you never know.

So that is 11 sellouts (possibly 12) from the 19 Premier League home games in a season of relegation battling. Imagine if we actually had a good season...?! 32k capacity is simply too small. Hence Cortese commissioning AFL for stadium development and expansion designs.

Christ, here he goes again.

I think about 38k would do it. Doesn't really seem worth it though. 50k is much too big for us.

This, our stadium is about right for us at the moment, but agree with MLG that we could have 5 or 6 games a season where we can get 40k. But whether thats worth it or not is another matter. For me, I'd rather keep what we have until we're established for a few years at this level, and pushing on. It would help from a business point of view if Reading go down and stay down for a few years.

I don't really see it as cost effective as surely it would cost a fortune for us to build another 10k seats.

SMS effectively cost £1,000 per seat, and a decade ago would have cost £3,000 a seat to expand. Judging by reported build costs of other stadia in more recent years, that cost has spiralled so it's not unreasonable to believe that it could cost at least £5,000 per seat now. Adding 10,000 seats on that basis would cost a frankly ridiculous £50m, nearly double what the original build cost.

At an average £35 per ticket, those 10,000 seats - if sold every game, which hasn't been the case this season anyway - would bring in around £6.5m in extra gate receipts. With cost of finance, maintenance, etc, that's a 9-10 year payback.

Yeah, I couldn't be bothered to do the maths ! But I think here in-lies the problem with us expanding. It would cost a fortune. Didn't Cortese mutter something about a new stadium when he first came in?! I'm sure if he is serious about it, then he has explored all avenues...

It's entirely conceivable that building a new stadium from the bottom up would be cheaper than adding another 10,000 to the current one, assuming you can get the land at a decent price. However, I get the impression the club are looking at the industrial land across the road from SMS for some sort of future commercial build which could bring in alternative revenue streams, so I'm not convinced we should be expecting a move away any time soon.

I really would hate it if we moved away. We're damn lucky we got a new stadium in a city centre location.

Imagine having to queue for ages for a shuttle bus to and from the ground like Reading, Bolton, Brighton... urgh.
