This fixture was huge for me when I lived in Southampton. It takes on extra significance when the missus is a scouser and one of the kids is an LFC fan. I thought we got battered in the away game. Liverpool hit the woodwork twice, iirc - the eventual scoreline really didn't reflect their dominance in the game. There can be no complaints about the scoreline today.

Sat and watched the whole spectacle with ms pap, who is now not talking to me. This suits my "**** about for the rest of the day and read glowing appraisals of Saints' performance" agenda quite well.

Excellent result, and if I may suggest, perhaps the best illustration of how MP differs from NA. The team had zero respect for Liverpool today, believed in victory from the start and as they often do when everything clicks, made an in-form team look ordinary.

The final paragraph does indeed underline a huge difference between NA and MP. NA's reverence to Liverpool in the away fixture was completely out of order and demotivational - we had lost before we kicked a ball at Anfield....

With Roy Hodgson there today & having named his England squad this week, I'd be interested to know whether he still thinks Sturridge is better than Rickie. Or even Johnson better than Clyne.

Brilliant performance & excellent result. Jay Rod fantastic in a team of great performances. Hope we can keep it up!

Think he would have been most impressed woth Shaw.

Need him to sign that deal in the summer. He could well make the World Cup squad if he keeps progressing - superb talent.

Agree he was brilliant today, pushing Jay for MoM in my view, but realistically not going to displace Cole or Baines at the mo (but maybe in a year or 2). Clyne & Lambo are more realistic options now IMO. And yes we need to sign Luke up at the 1st available opportunity.

Amazing to be near 10th after our side. Quality wise we're mid table at very worst. Just hope today finished off QPR.

I think today could be key, QPR have now I think have been really hurt (similar to us two weeks ago but thankfully we had more points on the board) from this result and now with Reading losing today could be the day when in all bar the shouting two teams are relegated, the issue is Wigan are playing and Villa will take a lot of heart from this, 2 down 1 to go though so a superb day for Southampton FC I feel.

OK we were pathetic and there are questions to be asked about many of our players but if I was a Saints fan today I'd be delighted to have witnessed that.

Today at 05:24:05 PM »southampton were excellent going forward. put our supposedly more talented and certainly more expensive players to shame with their fluency and desire. in the first half there were three in the box for every attack. neat, tight passing, but mixing it up with the short game and the direct game. a joy to watch, really, were it not for the opposition...

If Rodgers remit was to do similar at Liverpool then you have to question why he has been unable to get seasoned internationals performing this way consistently.

Clearly not seen us play this season then. Thought we played better against Man City TBH. That's not to take away from today's performance, which was excellent. Clyne MoM for me.

Wigan are playing well but are inconsistent, and I still think villa are really poor. I think you're right about reading and qpr, the best thing though is that it was 3 from 5, and now I think it's 2 gone but 1 more from quite a few. None of Norwich, Sunderland, stoke, west ham, Fulham or even the toon can feel totally safe. Given their form and remaining fixtures, I'd be worried if I was a hammer or Sunderland fan. Of course, if Wigan lose their games in hand it's almost all over.

Whatever the case, we are in a healthier position than we were at three o'clock

Great game and great win. Probably the best team performance this season. Would have to be a mega **** up to get relegated from here. Think today's results see Reading and QPR gone. If we win 2 of the 8 left we will stay up.

Great day for the fans. Sad day for our resident negative trolls but watch them try and suck any positivity out of it. COYRs

Big Mo said he varied J-rod and Rickies position today

Interesting ...anyone know what the formation was and what they did ? I only caught snippets of the game

the formation was his preferred 4-2-3-1, but it was very fluid.

Rickie would drop and jrod run on ahead, and vice versa. backed by full backs pushing, allowing Gaston and Adam to get in and around the box too.

Morgan played quite high too, he just seems to be everywhere!

TBF if I was a Liverpool fan I'd ask the same question. So glad we won today, couldn't stand Gerrard and Suarez coming down here and enjoying themselves.

What a great night that was. Reckon we had around 14 of the Dubai Massive in Barasti watching our usual telly, but with it being Paddys' the place was rammed so the entire corner where we sat became footie corner.

We had Villans & a sad loan QPR fan, Scousers & Gooners, must have been close to 50 people watching 4 different games oohing ahhing and cheering.

When they showed the rain on the telly we almost got a chorus of we're nice & dry out here going.

Scousers started shouting at their lot, then shouting about Allen & then about everyone. (No doubt they had an off day in the press tomorrow!)

BUT here are some telling comments and not from us How the fook does Sturridge get in the England squad ahead of JRod?

Christ apart from the goal wish you lot had signed Coutinho

How good is that Ramirez? Hope our man signs him in the summer (Gooner)

Where did you find that keeper? lol

First half some of the touches and football was just sublime, I think as others have said we (and probably NA) would have been waiting for Liverpool to get going and take us to the cleaners, but MP has instilled something into this team.

To be critical we all felt we dropped the pace and intensity at the start of the 2nd half, but then JRod came up with a CMFG at Ipswich goal.

Even my youngest (a scouser) sent a txt at the end and said wow, well played

Oh and as for the rest of the England squad with Wilshere out, how the hell is Cork not in it, let alone Clyne & Adam?

Buzzing tonight

Just been reading the Liverpool forums and tweets. Like every other team that we've beaten, it's been their "worst performance of the season". Lol, how many teams have we done this to now?

Having said that, plenty of complimentary comments on RAWK. Though, the most arrogant one was "Southampton haven't played like this in 10-15 years, they should be delighted with that"

What a game. Would love to see how many shots we had on and off target in the first half. I reckon it was a good 6 on and 6 off to their couple of chances. We were chasing every ball once again which is good to see. Boruc is my MoM - top save when we were 2-1 up.

For those not there, I managed to get Rickies goal on vid..

It was as good a performance as you will ever see for the first 30 minutes. After that, I thought Liverpool took control. In fact, I thought they were going to go on and win it until MP took off GR and replaced him with SD. A tactic NA used to great effect at times. GR played well first half, but SD certainly shored it up for us and the tide slowly turned after 60 minutes. I wish the Saints players could shoot, as we should have been 4-1 up at half time and the game would have been already over. A word of caution, though. We are getting done very, very easily with the long ball over the top. Too easily. The difference between this and QPR? Liverpool didn't park the bus, and we mixed up our short and long game to good effect. A great effort by all the lads, it wouldn't be fair to single out any one of them for special praise. Top drawer.

Been skiing in the Alps, managed to find a bar showing the game on Setanta and saw the last 30 minutes. When JRod scored about 6 of us all went mental and the Scouse fans were saying, "sh*t where have all these Saints fans come from," loved it.

Come on Man U and Newcastle!

Saggy chops on sky what a tosser how the hell we went behind . It's your fault arry lad . He's annoyed saints won . I get the impression he wanted us to drop in the bottom 4

I saw that too, typical twitchy **** deflecting the blame away from himself for the loss. They need at least 15 points from 8 games, could be down in a few weeks hopefully!!

We were class today, reminds me of the saints of old raising their game for the big teams and struggling against the dross. Morgan was incredible today, chased everything and bossed the centre of the pitch, equally frightening and exciting just how good he could be in 2-3 years time.

Good to see J-Rod further showing his potential again, he's starting to play without fear and looks all the better for it.

Outstanding performance and a result that was fully justified. I don't want to hear any nonsense from the media saying how poor Liverpool were - Saints completely dominated that game and taught them a football lesson. I cannot believe how many hoofing route one balls Liverpool tried to make - they just didn't come here with a game plan.

The final paragraph sums it up for me, but we do perhaps need to pay more respect to teams at the bottom of the table! Great result and really surprised me.

NA was in thrall to Liverpool FC. Check out this "Ask The Boss" interview.

Start at 1:56, but I'd recommend checking out the whole video (the embedded bit is part 2).

hahaha, too much of the sauce mate. Cork's the only one that has the consistency to get anywhere near the England squad.

Our players are very, very underrated.

- If Johnson can play for England, so can Clyne.

- I haven't seen a better left back in England than Luke Shaw this season. Ashley Cole is still a top, top player, as is Baines but Shaw isn't far from that standard and he's getting better and better.

- Cork is far better than tripe like Rodwell, Livermore, Henderson, Shelvey, Cleverley - FAR better.

- For Lallana, see the same as above and add in the likes of greedy cloggers like Lampard, Gerrard etc. Yes, they WERE great players but they haven't got half the skill that Lallana has. The nearest player to Lallana, ability-wise, is Joe Cole. That said, Lallana's season has been arguably inconsistent and has also been injured for a while, which unfortunately means it takes time for him to bed back in and find form and fitness.

- Lambert is simply a better footballer than Bothroyd, Zamora, Welbeck and Sturridge. That said, he's 31 and despite the fact that wouldn't really affect his game, he's not a "diamond earrings, braaaaaaaaaap-braaaaaaaap,Taio Cruz, white-booted, sweatbanded One Direction " type of footballer. His face doesn't fit. It's a bloody shame, really.

- For Rodriguez, see above with the exception of maybe Sturridge. Having said that, he shows far more technical and finishing ability than Sturridge but he's a not a "braaaaaap-braaaaaap-in-the-club" footballer either. Unless he goes to a bigger club, he'll never get a chance.

Despite all this, I'm partly delighted they're not in the squad for selfish reasons. They'd be surrounded by self-absorbed, overrated knobbers and I wouldn't want our players to absorb any of that. That said, it's very selfish of me and in my heart of hearts, I'd be delighted if some of our players got capped.

Additionally, I still do believe they're going to have to play a good season or two in the top division before they might get a genuine chance. Whether that's with us, who knows? One things for sure though, our players are technically a lot, lot better than many of the players in teams above us.

Hows about we try to take control of our own destiny by getting the three wins, rather than coasting and trying to be smart-arses with the maths ?

I wasn't being a smart arse it's just obvious that we don't need three more wins. How about we enjoy today's result without putting any clauses in it?

nice to see you posting when we win, but you still had to throw in the "but", enjoy because bit by bit we are becoming a top flight/top half club again

he went away burning with shame for calling up sturridge

rodriguez genuinely looks a better bet

I really hate managers who call up players who are sh*t but because they are playing a big clubs they get picked, Saw the below stat earlier about the premier league for Ricky v Welbeck

Chances created:

Lambert - 62.

Welbeck - 18.

Chance conversion:

Lambert - 67%.

Welbeck - 25%.

Goals:

Lambert - 13.

Welbeck - 1.

Another few:

Lambert- 13 PL goals.

Rooney- 11 goals.

Defoe- 10 goals.

Sturridge- 4 goals.

Welbeck- 1 goal.
