Neef Posted 4 March, 2013 Share Posted 4 March, 2013 Morning fellow Saints fan. Some may remember my post about Cork/Schneiderlin, well Ive written a piece on Shaw and would love your views on the piece and the player himself. Could he be as good as Ashley Cole? What are his strengths, what can he improve on? What really struck me was how a 17 year old was thrown into a relegation battle yet he has risen to the challenge so well. It was such a risky move by Adkins (perhaps out of force due to Fox's struggles this season). But it really shows when he is not playing, simple things such as timing of headers or the effectiveness of clearances are often overlooked because he does them so well, where as they have led to goals when he is not playing. I also think his passing ability has been overlooked by many, it's refreshing to see him quickly glance around before receiving the ball. As a result he can offload the ball very quickly and he can help maintain a high tempo. The boy is brilliant, I'd be here all day if I were to list all of his strengths! My only criticism of him is that on a few occasions he has been shaky with the offside trap. Against Wigan where he didn't step up and we conceded last minute. Also against Sunderland where Yoshida was deepest and wanted to step up and Shaw had taken up a position where Yosh couldn't see him. The way in which we attempt to play offside (Under Adkins anyway) means the full back always has to be in front of the CB, so that the CB can step up as the striker makes his run but just in the split second before the ball is played. Not a major criticism as he is still only 17 and in the PL there is so much for a defender to focus on. That's how I see it anyway, what about you guys? Here's the article I wrote about him: http://afootballreport.com/post/44528987160/they-keep-going-and-more-still-emerge-luke-shaw-is
Lallana's Left Peg Posted 4 March, 2013 Share Posted 4 March, 2013 Has a ridiculous amount of potential, paved a way into the first team for himself via his composure and pace. Has more to offer going forward but for now he is concentrating on just keeping the ball and growing into the role. Quite impressed by his ability in the air as well, appears to have a great leap from a standing position. He'll make some mistakes and we should expect that, but for a 17 year old in the top flight he is brilliant and will go on to be a fantastic player. Hopefully will spend a good few more years with us before he makes his way at a big club in Europe. Nothing seems too much effort for him and he is very laid back. You're right, can't wait to see how his attacking play develops. If he adds to that side of his game then he has all of the attributes to be one of the best full backs we have seen in this country. I wish more of our defenders played with his composure; ironic that he is the youngest of the lot.
Alanh Posted 4 March, 2013 Share Posted 4 March, 2013 He's got huge potential and I hope that we get to enjoy much of it in a Saints shirt. His composure on the ball is excellent although I'd question your claim about him being good in the air. I think that's one area of his game where he needs to improve to be really top class. Andre Posted 4 March, 2013 Share Posted 4 March, 2013 Luke Shaw, if he stays with us for the rest of his career, will be Southampton's greatest ever left-back. If he goes somewhere else, he will be one of their greatest ever left-backs. If he's given the opportunity for England from an early age, he will be one of our best as well. Honestly, I think he will be amazing. Unless he's injury prone.
SaintWill71 Posted 4 March, 2013 Share Posted 4 March, 2013 I'm sure someone will point out a couple of times he has crossed well but from what I have seen his delivery has been really poor.
110_Persaint Posted 4 March, 2013 Share Posted 4 March, 2013 We tend to overrate him on here to be honest. Bit rubbish when he came on on Saturday.

Here's the article I wrote about him: http://afootballreport.com/post/44528987160/they-keep-going-and-more-still-emerge-luke-shaw-is[/quote Nice penmanship ...although you seem to have mistaken a little about Fox's heritage, and it sounds like you're suggesting he is a Scot who couldn't adjust to being in England. Fox was actually born in Cheshire, and was even part of the Everton youth scheme as a boy, before moving onto to play League football in England. Later in his career, in a very brief (6 month long stay) at Celtic, he played only 15 games..... before returning to England and signed for Burnley. He actually played an U21 game for England, but later qualified for a Scottish cap...... only because of his Scottish grandfather. However, interesting article about both players.
