Our High Pressing - Easy to counter?

We will not play a high-pressing game, at least not successfully or consistently, with Ramirez in the line up.

Schneiderlin - a key factor in the high aggression - has to play deeper to cover for Ramirez's style, so the press is essentially gone right there.

Ramirez may have some cracking skills but he doesn't fit into the so-called Pochettino style. I'm shocked he picked him today.

I'm yet to see any evidence of this. Apart from being in the right place at the right time to score today, he didn't show any sign of the kind of creativity that we need from him. And I've had enough of people apologising for him with the tired old "He's young, he's in a new country, he's adapting to the PL". None of that should have any effect on a player's ability to play a decent free kick/corner into the danger area - something that Ramirez seems utterly incapable of.

Once again today, it's no coincidence that we start to look better when he isn't on the pitch.

We caught teams out in the first few games, and it worked quite well. All the oppo need to do though is play with pace on the counter, hit a high ball and watch Fox or Yoshida fall on their arse. Game over.

We need better players to play that way, which is exactly what Adkins and co sussed out and is why we went back to basics. We'll leave ourselves open to some absolute pastings if we continue this way IMO, and ultimately, probably relegation.

This is what I'm concerned about, we just surprised teams. Now they can study us it seems fairly easy to counter.

And what worries me more is that MP doesn't seem to have an alternative, he just looked lost today. Just devoid of anything on the touchline, nothing ever changed.

This was the complaint and frustration from Espanyol fans. They said he has one style and one tactic and it almost relegated them

Nothing to do with the high press - Fox and Yoshida weren't caught out because they were too high up the pitch.

The problem was and remains that everything runs through Lambert and his ability to win and hold the ball in dangerous positions and that option was totally strangled today.

That over dependence predates MP.

Spot on. Priority number one is survival and our squad should be good enough to do that. It does not have to be pretty.

This was not my opinion..... As said in my post this was from Espanyol fans?

But it confirms what you think, no?

.

You have no idea why some Espanyol fans may have thought he was one-dimensional -or indeed you might be bulls****g. Today's performance had more with how we've been setting up for ages than any real influence from a manager who's been here a measly six games.

Yes we get caught out occasionally, but our real problem is the lack of cutting edge. People moan about us passing it across the back four in the 89th minute. But when Morgan does the fetch and carry and looks up to see a static front five, what option has he got? There's just no real movement up front to create space and opportunities for openings.

The only one today with any real attacking intent was Rodriguez. He probably had more shots on goal than the rest of the team put together and the goal was his making.
