david in sweden Posted 27 February, 2013 Share Posted 27 February, 2013 Yes.. he's still a Saints player, although out on loan - though not for much longer. Sadly, I've read little positive comment on this site for RD, but harsh criticism is hardly fair ...when you consider all the circumstances. He was a product of Plymouth 's Academy (in their better days) and even debut-ed for Argyle when aged 16. (2004) Overcoming an injury, he was loaned out and eventually signed for Brentford, and was a stand-out player whilst still in his teens and got rave reviews. In 2010, Saints paid £125K for him (with the promise of add-ons**), as Dan Harding's cover, whose good form at the time, meant Ryan was on the bench up until our L1 promotion. Still out of the action, even after Harding lost his place to Danny Fox, Ryan looked increasingly unlikely to get any game time... with the emergence of Luke Shaw. Loans out gave him some action, and though Yeovil wanted him...they couldn't come up with the finance for the deal, (by now he'd cost Saints £200K**) ..and so RD stayed at SMS. At last...a six month loan out to Bradford City...where he played 5 games with some good reviews UNTIL...an ankle injury that needs immediate surgery, and 6 months rehab. With the prospect of the " op " .....and then being out of contract in June, his once promising career looks to be in real jeopardy. Good Luck Ryan ...I think you'll need it. Dickson is a League 2 footballer, anyone who maintains otherwise is deluded. Bad positioning, day dreams half of the time and the very fact that AL (or so they say) didn't want to play with him should tell you all there is to know. Adkins wanted nothing to do with him and so we got lucky.
Andre Posted 27 February, 2013 Share Posted 27 February, 2013 Definitely a League Two player, mid-League One at a push on his day. Nothing special particularly, but obviously I hope he recovers and gets to do what he loves for a bit longer. Best of luck with whoever he's with when he can play again, but really we should be cutting ties with him now; he hasn't been a Saints player for a long, long time. Mowgli Posted 27 February, 2013 Share Posted 27 February, 2013 I've not read anything that suggests the injury is career threatening. He will be back playing in Div 1 if not the Championship in time. Just needs stability with one club. Pointless thread really.
pingwing Posted 27 February, 2013 Share Posted 27 February, 2013 Hope his ankle fixes up but good god he was a poor player. Offered nothing other than being another body at the club when we just needed to get through the season. Turkish Posted 27 February, 2013 Share Posted 27 February, 2013 An excellent full back who could be a massive player for us. His run and cross for Lamberts goal at Orient away in 2011 convinced me he could be a real star in the premier league and the attacking full back we are missing. I think he needs to be allowed to show what he can do in top flight.

I was wondering if you'd make a contribution Turkish ....wow 17,000 plus posts.. you really do have the opportunity to do this full time - don't you. I don't think anyone suggested he was even Championship level, certainly not me, but some people criticised him for lack of performance when it someone else's idea to employ him. I was lamenting the lack of opportunities he's had..... when he could surely have made some sort of a career at a lower level, given the chance. As it is, he will have to start over again after the summer, and hope he gets a new start with someone else.

When we signed him from Brentford he had just been named L1 LB of the season so it's unfair to say he can't hack it at that level. No better but he is a good L1 level player. Clearly he's like punch not suited to the lower leagues but given additional time and space that you get in premier league would definitely excel. Saint Charlie Posted 27 February, 2013 Share Posted 27 February, 2013 (edited) BOLD thread Davie. Personally, I think you are a visionary - often maligned on this Forum but clearly you are just before your time. In years to come the "special one" won't be Jose it will be Davie. Back yourself son. He will be back playing in Div 1 if not the Championship in time. Just needs stability with one club. Pointless thread really. Think the point is that if he is out of contract and undergoing rehab there is a likelihood that he will get overlooked. There are dozens, maybe even hundreds of pro footballers that are left out of work each Summer, even ones without injuries, so his prospects don't look too hopeful. In the past Saints have sometimes been magnanimous and kept players on until they recover, but I doubt we will do so in RD's case.

Lets get him back and fight it out with Shaw for the left back spot.

Turkish Posted 27 February, 2013 Share Posted 27 February, 2013 League one player quality when we signed him, has not worked out for him, so all the best lad. How can you say this? He's not been given the chance and showed real quality when he's played. Like the run and cross for Lambert v Orient when we needed to win he produced a bit of magic and rose to the occasion. Why do you not think he couldn't do it in the Prem? He's shown himself to be a big game player in the past.
