He won't even be with us for that long.

Also, if we want to be a challenging team, we're going to need proper stars in our team, not just a bunch of players who look good for the under-21s.

Sorry, but good as he is he gets pushed off the ball far too easily. Needs to develop, physically before he is anywhere near ready for first team. I didn't see anyone last night that was pushing for a first team place (including JWP who was quite anonymous, Gazza or Forren). I kept thinking we have something like 14 players out on loan, the u21s look very lightweight without them (Liverpool have the same issue according to their commentator). Forren does not look like he is better than what we already have, and I don't see any need to change from Fonte and Yoshi, as long as Fox is not playing there is not much wrong with these as our central pairing, and I would prefer Jos to Forren at the moment at least.

I've mentioned it earlier in the thread, but understanding who will and won't challenge for first team spots off the back of u21 and u18 games is very hard and it isn't easy to do. JWP had an efficient game and he is closest to the first team out of all that played last night yet in terms of tangible contribution that is easy for the fans to see he didn't do a great deal. I thought his positioning was great and Liverpool didn't do much down the middle at all despite the rotation of all their players.

Also interesting to see that Martin Hunter played down Omar Rowe's performance, suggesting that Rowe needs to learn when to take on his man and when he needs to link up with his other players. Although I'm surprised Rowe hasn't signed a professional deal yet - he's been as good as anyone else in our u18's this season.

Lastly, a good example of how hard it is to step up to the first team can be seen with Suso. Suso is 19 years old and made EIGHTEEN appearances in the Liverpool first team this season and not made an impression at all. At times last night he looked a world beater (no end product though...) yet if we had a player like him doing that for us we'd all be demanding he start in the first team. Taking on fellow youth players like that is very different to doing it at first team level, and even then you shouldn't be taking on players all the time either.

We look like we are developing some good players and they all have time on their side but it is hard to say who will and won't make it from these games - there are so many different things to consider and the general quality of the game differs greatly from week to week depending on who is playing etc.

After last nights match, thought Targett and Robinson looked pretty good. Rowe delivered some great corners and a couple of dangerous balls into the box, but was tiny and super lightweight. No one else really looked up to much last night, although Liverpool must be one of the stronger teams they'll play - Suso and Wisdom both pretty good and have played a fair few times for the first team. Shelvey was pretty awful (apart from assist for goal).

Agree that Rowe is a bit lightweight - even at this age -

- but I was very impressed by his sequence of corner kicks ...all of them so accurate and deep into the six yard box....pity there was no-one else to finish them off properly.

Martin isn't under 21. Yes, he can technically play for them as an overaged player, but surely that doesn't count. And Reeves, didn't he come back at the end of February?

Aaron Martin has already been loaned out to Coventry, who look a good bet to return to the Championship, and Ben Reeves is " continuing his training " at Southend before signing a loan extension.

'Reeves, whose initial month long loan from Southampton expired before Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Rotherham United, is also still training with Blues. The midfielder watched the game against the Millers at the weekend but Southend have opted to delay extending his loan spell in order to ensure he is available to figure in the end of the season play-offs should Blues finish in the top seven.Reeves is only able to sign for another two months and with the play off final not until Saturday May 18, the deal may not be completed for a little while yet.'

Pretty sure Reeves is on loan until the end of the season. Hopefully, he will even get a game at Wembley. Most certainly, if he was back and available he would have played. He was in the first team squad earlier in the season so well up the pecking order of the reserves (as it used to be called).

As for Martin, yes he is over 21 but certainly part of the 'development squad' as it is also referred. Forren is over 21 and played last night; Barnard, Seaborne, Jonno Quick, et al are all also over 21 and played many times for the U21s - so yes, to me, Martin does count.

No he's not. He was on a 28 day loan. Rules stipulate he can only do a 2 month loan now, the play off final for L2 is 18th May I think, so they're holding off on signing him on loan again. In the meantime he is training with them.

Who will it be? Can Jake Sinclair cut the mustard? How about Ryan Seager?

Does anyone watch our academy teams regularly?

..maybe not regularly, but some of the more anonymous streams that I can watch on computer ......often show U21 games (sometimes afternoons).....

..and in fact I did watch BOTH the U21 games v. Liverpool this season.

Problem being that the U21 sides change from match to match, and it's not as if there is a settled side...

A useful idea to give recovering / fringe-players an outing, but tough on youngsters on the way up....who need to be exceptional when they do get a game - if they are to stay.

Take a look at the Saints OS and see the teams that have played in this season's games and you'll see what I mean.

The major problem (except those with names like Walcott, Bale or Oxlade-Chamberlain)., is that they can look great at 17 ...but be lost to the "senior world" when they're 19, and end up in the Conference..if they're lucky.
