what absolutely terrific news. Feels like when Lallana signed that five year deal. Always thought he would be a Premiership player and give it a season or two and he'll be regarded as a top Premiership player. Very happy indeed.

This.

Exactly how it feels to me as well.

The longest serving saints player to date but you don't put him in the Mr Southampton bracket as Matt Le Tissier, wonder why?

For a start Morgan is not "the longest serving Saints player to date" by any measure, anywhere.

You really are special.

Kelvin Davis has served longer.

So has Lallana (2006).

Current players with most apps:

Kelvin Davis: 283

Lallana: 212

Schneiderlin: 184

Lambert: 184

Hammond: 145

Fonte: 137

Guly: 102

Shows a pretty good sign of continuity that we have six players in our our first team squad with over 100 appearances, especially when you take into consideration that we played in league one three years ago.

In comparison, QPR has none.

Yes indeed. Hlaf the team: must be pretty unusual, and a pretty interesting fact; good selection of players or good management?

Combination of both, I guess. All of them are players who had the potential to become good PL players when they came, but not without guidance, good management and experience through first team football. Imagine in three years time, I guess we could add Shaw, Clyne, Forren, Cork, Ramirez and Jay Rod to that list. Davis and Guly would probably be out, but Lambert could still play a role. That could make our starting eleven consist of 10 players with over 100 apps. Maybe not to likely, but would be a huge strength IMO.

Think that actually shows how much Lambert has played and how often Morgan has been injured !

Cangratulations to Rupert Lowe for signing him originally and for hanging on to him through the bad years when other good players were sold in the failed attempt to avoid administration. All those rumours that he was only going to be here for a year before going on to Arsenal or elsewhere proved to be entirely wrong.

Wait a minute. Hanging on to him through the bad years? Didn't we sign him in our relegation season? So Lowe only hung onto him for one year until administration and then Cortese stepped in

Nice to see MS bigging up Lambert as well:

However, Schneiderlin insists there is much more to Lambert's game than grabbing goals and has backed the Saints striker to impress if he is given a chance at international level.

"He can keep the ball, he gives you time to breathe, he's a very good player," the Frenchman told the Daily Echo.

"Out of my four goals I've scored this year, he's passed me three times the ball.

"He is someone who has great vision as well."

He added: "I really hope that he's going to get what he deserves, which is an England call-up.

"Seriously, I don't know what they're waiting for to call him up.

"He has scored 12 goals and I'm sure he will score even more."

Excellent news! Lovely to see the day finally arrive where the likes of our best players are signed to long term contracts instead of picked off by "bigger" clubs. There was a time which all no doubt recall, when this wasn't always the approach adopted with those entrusted with the keys of our special club.

This is great news. Schneiderlin is a player who is growing in stature game by game and beginning to make the pundits sit up and notice his ability and assurance in midfield. His tackling and accurate passing are seldom bettered by players even in the very top teams. He can't be far off being capable of playing in any of those teams and not looking out of place. He and Cork have forged a great partnership in our midfield and there can't be many others in the Premiership better than theirs.

I said that last week I was instantly told by fans of other clubs that they're nowhere near. Apparently Tiote and Cabaye, and Diame and Noble are streets ahead !!

Are we going a bit too far? Or do they just not watch them play so don't apprectiate how good they are. Morgan and Cork are excellent IMO and we're very lucky to have them.

Totally agree and been saying the same thing for ages. We are very lucky. Outside the top 4, there aren't many midfields that are better.

Schneiderlin re signing is an indication that he believes we can or are at least trying to match his own ambitions....

Thats how I read it. Be huge if Shaw does indeed commit as well. The dream is alive....!
