Newcastle 4-2 Southampton // Post-Match Reaction

Though Newcastle's pace stretched us (our defence seemed to be playing deeper leaving a lot of space between defence and midfield) they didn't have to work too hard for that victory. It just wasn't our day, from refs decisions to 50:50s, to lucky ricochets, to our performance. Although nothing went our way, ultimately we were architects of our own downfall. Inevitably Fox will get lambasted by all and sundry but he couldn't do much about the penalty decision. I think the handball was accidental. Tbh I don't know why Shaw was subbed. Puncheon looked bright when he came on and might have replaced Rodrigues sooner as he'd offered little.

No knee jerk from me. By the sounds of it we performed well up there.

However, they had too much for us on the day. I think they made 7 changes from their Europa league win and still looked too strong for us. They are now showing they are a top 8 side with the players they have added to their squad.

Something to aspire to. I am not downbeat in the slightest. A quick look over at their match thread shows we aren't too far away. Very complimentary from most of them. A proper football club with knowledgable supporters.

Now lets batter old twitch next week as they are truly awful and shouldn't be any match for our first 11 playing their A game.

Newcastle today were too strong and frankly too good even with a little help from us on a couple of goals. Well played.

For me, Pochettino made a big mistake with his starting line up by leaving Puncheon out.

We really missed his pace and his interplay with Clyne, and his absence gave Newcastle the comfort to attack us down that side.

In fact, I think that Pochettino was our-coached by Pardew today. He's smart enough to learn, though.

Never a penalty, but I'm wondering if the rules have changed??

Must admit I'm not sure what the rules say, but his arms were just slightly back in the position you have them when you're trying to balance yourself. Sometimes I reckon some people on here haven't played football, they're so harsh on the slightest mistake.

Nothing went well for us today, although both of our goals were good ones. It was fairly obvious why Shaw went off, and it wasn't because he was playing badly, but he's a 17 year old kid on a booking up against some very experienced and physical opponents (look how he got his booking, for example). So a day to write off, I'm afraid. I thought having our game called off due to snow and being able to watch was going to be a baaad thing. :-(

Pards said Saints better team first 20 mins of each half. He loves SRL and told him early on in his Saints days he could play in the prem. Went on to praise Debuchy and staff at Newcastle as you'd expect. Very gracious and said our recent run shows our quality and is why we'll be fine this season.

The rule is the same as it has always been, "deliberately handling the ball".
cheers. I thought that was the case. Far far too many pens beign given when shots and crosses are smashed into arms in their natural positions. Foy is a useless ****.

Newcastle are a good side, they won't be down there for long. Cabaye, Tiote and Sissoko are very good players, better than what we have

When it went to 2-2 we were dominating but game changed as soon as Shaw went off. Agree about Punch, he should be playing every week, and Ramirez doesn't seem to fit in at all, neither this or that. I'd sell him in the summer and get the money back

How many OGs has Hooiveld scored now this season? I know they are always the result of bad luck, and there was nothing he could have done about that one today, but you have to wonder if it can possibly just be coincidence.

far too easy for their wide left player (can't recall whom it was) getting into the box and crossing it in. That is where a lot of the blame lies for that own goal.

The rules say that it's hand ball if a player "handles the ball deliberately (except for the goalkeeper within his own penalty area)", but it's been interpreted differently fo some time.

That allows tools like Foy and Dowd the licence to be homers and to give a penalty in one case but not another. FIFA needs to get a grip on this because nobody really knows what hand ball is any more.

In hindsight, wish Jose had come on for Shaw, assuming he needed to come off, pushing Jos or Yoshida to LB.

IIRC that was the lineup against Stoke, who were also strong and direct, and it was pretty effective.

Yoshida played right back that day. When he played left back against West Ham he was woeful.

Watched the game, we played well in the 2nd half. First half (post 5 mins in) wasn't great viewing we really struggled to keep hold off the ball. Sadly Fox cost us the game, he really lacked composure, Shaw was caught out a few times but Fox had a poor game. Lallana was excellent in the second half which was great to see, we struggled to get a foothold in the middle overall.

Newcastle looked pretty decent, Sissoko is a class act. Also some nice comments about us on the NUFC forum http://www.nufc-forum.com/nufcforum/index.php?topic=48830.0

A post with some reason, i wonder if half the haters and posters on here ever watch the game??

Thought we played well but thought Newcastle had the rub of the green. If Lambo had scored the header it may have been a different story. Agree about your comment about Puncheon.

Should Boruc have saved the second goal?

25 yards out and straight down the middle.

Or should I not bring that up as he's flavour of the month on here?

I think Kelvin or Gazzaniga would have kept that out.

Cue Delldays inevitable response calling me a ****.

;)

Maybe he should/could have saved it.

Maybe Ricky should/could have scored his second opportunity. Maybe Lallana should/could have scored his miss, or Gaston from his FK

What is your point?

Was swerving and dipping - very difficult but I think he was surprised by it.

On the pen, having now seen it think it was very harsh. Very close range, no deliberate attempt to block the ball, little chance of getting out of the way. Would never have been given against, for example, Manure.
