Newcastle 4-2 Southampton // Post-Match Reaction

Killed ourselves 2 or 3 times in that game, our own-undoing.

Generally pathetic in the first half, but better in the 2nd half - but we never really got a control of the game. Very huff and puff and you have to say that Newcastle easily deserved that win.

They were much stronger and quicker than us all over the pitch, and sharper when it mattered. These 2 week lay offs do not do us any favours at all.

Next week is huge. Nervous for it already!

we played alright.

hardly tested their keeper though...passed it around ok at times

but lets be honest, they were better than us today..quicker, stronger and just better than us today

many teams will find it very hard to get a win at St James for the rest of the season..they have added such pace and power

Lambert, cork and morgan did well...lambert was just excellent again even at time isolated

lallana was a passenger in the 1st half...good in the 2nd

rodriguez was no where at all

I would very surprised to see puncheon out and when he came on, he was looking good. surely he wont be out next week

and I hope gaston turns up next week

I cant see hooiveld playing next week, like an accident waiting to happen...not really his fault for the own goal

and danny fox....oh dear.

QPR will be a hard game next week as they looked half decent against man united and they DO have some good players who can play if they dare turn up

well, this might bring the loonies down to earth about some unstoppable march to 10th place..for all the teams that are so bad (apparently) above us...yet we just cant get above 15th place...does that make them not as bad as suggested or us even worse..?

massive game next week, we really need to win it...i think we will\

theirs WAS a penalty...and you all would be livid had we not got that decision

the ref was a fukker though

It's clear that Newcastle will be a force again next season. I would worry about having so many French players though.

We didn't really get going and shame Puncheon didn't come on a bit earlier to give us a bit more going forward. Back to Fonte and Yoshida next week me thinks.

Something for MP to think about, the way they stretched and isolated our defence, particularly in the first half.

Newcastle are on the up since the transfer window.

Must learn for this for next week. Fonte back to calm the back four down I hope.

I am of down the lane to watch the league cup final, before the bed wetters take over.

Danny Fox was very, very poor and panicky.

Feel disappointed for the CBs, especially Yoshida. I don't think you'll ever see a team concede four goals with the CBs doing as little wrong. I mean don't get me wrong Hooiveld didn't have a great game but the full-backs got roasted.

On that point. Clyne is a problem, and a big one at that. Going forward he's fine but at the back and 1-v-1 against a winger running at him I'm very worried. He puts a lot of effort in but the lad is just too lightweight.

We looked a different team to all other games since MP has been here. Our tight, controlled, high-tempo, passing game only made a few appearances. We didn't look bad, we looked competitive, but the strength and determination we've had of late went missing.

I do wonder if the comments pre-game about having two weeks off being a bad thing are spot-on. Newcastle should, in theory, have been tired from a Thursday game and travelling, but they looked faster, fitted and harder working and ultimately that's why they won.

For me the manager made his first mistakes today. The problem is he hasnt been here long enough to know fox is pants. Also, unless puncheon was poorly then why not start him and if you havent started him then why the hell does gaston deserve to come in before him?

Scoreline flattered Newcastle, but they probably edged it and deserved the win.

Introduction of Fox turned the game in the hosts' favour - no complaints about the penalty but Hooiveld own goal was shocking.

Referee Chris Foy was poor, no major decisions wrong but very picky and gave needless free-kicks/bookings.

Overall, an OK performance but disappointed not to come away with a point.

QPR is huge now - still believe we'll be alright.

Keep the faith.

so, did you all think it was a penalty then? I can't see any complaints, so assume that's the case.

What's the official rule these day because there was zero intent, it was totally accidental, his hand/arm wasn't raised to block it, so I don't see it as a handball at all.

Then again I could not be more biased. If the roles were reversed would I expect to get the pen? I'm not sure I would actually.

Great Cisse goal but it was confirmed offside on the replay.

Understand why MP took Shaw off as the yellow could have easily been a red later during the game. But sadly Fox had a bad game. His handball was unfortunate but what was he doing for that clearance OG?!

Lambert is a class on his own, loads of great cushion headers.

Wrong move bringing on Ramirez instead of Punch at that time. If Punch had been in the position Ramirez was a couple of times he'd have scored.

Boruc impresses me game in game out. A bit c*cky at times but if he plays like that I'm happy - no chance of saving the pen!

All in all, 4-2 was probably a little harsh. Watched the full 90+ minutes on a fantastic internet feed.

Now I know why I hate the French.

Bingo - they are a very good team and are for some reason currently in a false position this season. Seriously, a point would have been good for us to get, but we never do well up there and they ARE a good team. First half we looked like we really had two weeks without playing - it showed.

But Newcastle are a good side and will/should be top 6 next season again.

I'd love to sign Tiote - wouldn't happen, but hey ho.

Its now a clear 5 horse race for a relegation escape between bottom 3 , Sunderland and Saints. We must win vs QPR as I dont think we can sort our defence out before end season. Saints are just too inconsistant during games and still weak at the back so totally relying on goals scored exceeding the ones going in.

Big, fast and tough teams will allways cause Saints problems so need to win the 4-5 weaker teams left. If Fox is that bad why do we keep playing him?? This is the same problem we had with NA and player selections.

Who else do we play if shaw isn't avaliable? :?

Never a penalty, but I'm wondering if the rules have changed?? He was running forwards, arms swaying as they do when you run with energy and the ball hit his arm ... I thought it was harsh on Fox and he shouldn't be blamed for that, in my opinion.

We will smash QPR.

I prefer the old way in which that would not be a penalty, but if that's the way it is these days, then fair enough as long as all incidents are judged equally.

Newcastle look a good side to be fair. Played us at our own game by pressing us high up the pitch and we couldn't cope for long periods. Clyne and Shaw were poor as they had no time on the ball, same for Cork.

Not really much you can do about an OG like that, hard to blame Fox or Hooiveld. However would still bring Fonte back in next week.

Sissoko is a cracking player.

The rule is the same as it has always been, "deliberately handling the ball". There are no references in the Laws of the Game to "ball to hand" or "hand to ball" or any of the other cock that some of the commentators/pundits come up with.

Thinking back, Rickie was a whisker away from giving us a 3-2 lead. Their 2nd was plainly offside while we gifted them their other goals.

It was a game we could easily have got something from but it doesn't help if you have to play the ref as well.

Just one of those days. If we're back to our best on Saturday it'll all be forgotten.

as someone posted above...I would have been happy with 2 points from the last 2 games a few weeks ago...but we now have 3.

it still the utter dross, gazza in goal etc that is still hurting us.

newcastle will probably finish top half (not us)..they looked good today..fair play to them

we got lots of luck against man city..and today it was not our day...
