Most expensive Saints XI ever < Fernando Torres

So it's not spam, but I wrote a blog post on the most expensive Southampton lineup ever... because I... like doing stuff like that. It's interesting how cheaply we were able to get certain players over the years, and considering the exports we've made (Bale, Walcott, etc.) I think we're a pretty damn good business! I'll put the lineup below, so you don't have to read the blog, but it's a bit more in-depth if you wanna take a look. Basically, our most expensive XI is still less than Fernando Torres. And yes... I know my name is stupid.

GK: Paulo Gazzaniga, £2.5m

RB: Nathaniel Clyne, £2.5m

CB: Rory Delap, £4m

CB: Vegard Forren, £4.2m

LB: Jelle Van Damme, £2m

CM: David Prutton, £2.5m

CM: Nigel Quashie, £2.1m

AM: Gastón Ramírez, £12m

RF: Jay Rodriguez, £6.5m

CF: Kevin Phillips, £3.25m

LF: Emmanuel Mayuka, £3m

Total cost: £44.55m

Torres cost: £50m (lol)

We'd get murdered down the right. Also, can't Prutton and Quashie play in front of the back 4 so we can play 4-2-3-1 or are you planning on getting sacked for being free-thinking and tactically adept ? That's adept, not inept.

To be fair to Torres, he did score one of the funniest goals in football history when he counterattacked the 10 Barca players in Chelsea's penalty area.

We didn't pay that much for him did we?

:uhoh:

Thereabouts.

"Some media sources claimed that the transfer fee paid by Southampton for Paulo Gazzaniga in 2012 was higher than that paid for Robert Taylor, but the fee was not officially disclosed by either club." Gillingham received £1.5m for Taylor from Manchester City.

Transfermarkt reports it as £2.77m.

Worth every penny IMO. It's ridiculous the number of times he got us out of jail this season.

Maybe somebody can do one comparing what they think the actual value of those players was against what the actual value of Torres. i would do it myself but... no actually I wouldn't ever do it myself.

Didn't Delgado cost 3.5million, plus I always think we have to say he was really 4.5 million, but for some reason we had to pretend a million of it was for kleber Chala.

Haha yeah, that formation would be more likely, but we'd be really thin in the middle then... either way it's not an ideal lineup, I just took the most expensive players!

Anyone know what the most expensive Saints team would be in terms of sales for each position?

My guess is it would be something like: Flowers, Kenna, Richards, Hall, Bridge, Walcott, Ox-C, Surman?, Bale, Davies, Beattie but I without looking it up I could be wildly wrong...

Crouch and Kenwyn possibly?

What do we think our current team are worth, assuming contracts weren't just about to end? 'Worth' = what you would expect someone to pay for them, not what the club would be willing to sell them for.

Boruc - £3m

Shaw - £15m

Fonte - £3m

Yoshida - £5m

Clyne - £7m

Cork - £6m

Schneiderlin - £12m

Lallana - £12m

Lambo - £5m

Punch - £5m

Jay Rod - £12m

= £85m

Subs:

Gaston - £14m

Hoidveld - £1m

Fox - £750k

Ward-Prowse - £5m

Mayuka - £3.5m

Davis - £1.5m

Gazza - £2m

= £28m odd

I did look that up as well, pretty much on the money there. Stats below. Sort of weird that there are so many strikers, but you can put them in a sort of 3-4-3 if you wanna play Jones and Walcott as playmakers... doesn't really work!

GK: Tim Flowers - £2.4m

RB: Chris Baird - £3.025m

CB: Dean Richards - £8.1m

LB: Wayne Bridge - £7m

RM: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - £15m

LM: Gareth Bale - £10m

RF: Theo Walcott - £12m

LF: Kenwyne Jones - £6m

ST: Kevin Davies - £7.5m

ST: Peter Crouch - £7m

ST: James Beattie - £6m

I'd have thought Niemi was more expensive than Gazza. The latter I could have sworn was about £1.5m with a few add ons for apps etc. Niemi was at least £2m up front I think.

Also In defence Killer and Hooiveld were both a shade over £2m so you could have them in for McQ, with Delap moving to his place in midfield. Up front I think Tin Man cost marginally more than Mayuka.

Put Shearer in goal and you can increase the value of the team (£3.6m)

Literally loled. Please tell me you're not serious? If someone offered us £10m for this pair combined I'd bite their arm off.

Do you actually know anything at all about football?

Even if I knew nothing at all, I'd have to be either blind or a f**king knobhead to think JayRod is worth £12m based on his performances this season, and to think Gaston is worth half of whatever we paid for him, based on his performances this season.

And I'm neither blind nor a knobhead. :)

This year (2013) JRod has been brilliant. So I don't really get where you think he will have devalued at all, I'm not even going to ask where you got this £12m figure. For £7m, he looks fine. Considering players like Downing & Henderson go for the £20m mark, I don't think it's that unrealistic to think JRod is worth around £7-10m.

Gaston at 1/2 value is £6m. Errrm yeah, he is EASILY worth that.

If you think any club in their right mind is willing to shell out more than £10m for a pair of very attack-minded players (quite often employed as forwards) with 6 league goals between them in a season of shedloads of appearances then you are seriously deluded I am sorry to say.

As deluded as paying £50m on a striker at his peak, clearly on the decline, and having only once scored more than 20 League goals.

Gaston is not a striker. And JRod has barely played as an out-and-out striker, although his goals return when he has played up top (more often in the cup) hasn't been too bad.

Neither have had really extended runs in the team, Gaston particularly has had bad luck with injuries settling in a new country. If you can't see that the pair both have excellent potential, from what is limited time in their first season in the premier league, you are seriously ignorant. Potential comes at a premium if you hadn't noticed.

Would Torres get in out first eleven. Serious question your thoughts please no place in our team is my opinio for what its worth.

Not currently but I reckon he'd love a change of scenery - would he play better with our players around him? Possibly. Still there's not many strikers good enough to play the lone strikers role, as Lambert is doing exceptionally.

Jay Rod - £12m

Gaston - £14m

Disagree strongly on these two.

JRod has been decent so far this year but hasn't done enough for other clubs to think he's worth double what we paid imo.

Gaston has so far been a flop at £12m. He isn't consistent and never performs away from home. If anything I think his price has gone down to around £8m. Let's be honest with ourselves here, if Gaston had signed for someone like Reading for £12m and performed the same as he has for us, would we consider him worth that amount of money or would we call him a flop?
