West Ham to bid for Lambert

If we were offered something silly like £10m+, and Rickie was offered something silly like £70k pw, then I could see this happening with everyone happy with the deal. Although as his age pushes his 'market value' below the cost of replacing him I can't see it happening.

West Ham do have a history of throwing too much money at older players. Didn't they throw bids around last season in the Championship, bloating their squad with anyone half decent like Maynard etc. I'm sure that they will do the same if they stay up, throw down offers for Benteke, Lambert, Holt, Le Fondre, Hooper etc and see which clubs bite. Certainly not the way I'd select transfers, but heck, West Ham seem to do things their own special way.

If he's replaced it would have to be with someone brilliant, even then you'd want Rickie for the competition. West Ham would waste him, he'd be back to a simple target man, whereas here he can do that and show his technical ability. Shame he's not 5 or 6 years younger or he'd be worth a fortune.

He can go to WH for a pay day in 3 seasons.

Our exact problem with replacing him.

He might not be worth in Market terms £10-15 million becaus eof his age, but I think he's a better all round player than Fletcher for example who cost £12 million (and his value has probably gone up). So to get a Rickie replacement that wasn't 31 we'd be looking at £10 million plus.

It's interetsting that the likes of West Ham and Stoke are linked with Lambert. What do they take him for? Rhetorical question. Money and Saints being willing to sell would maybe smooth the passage but you can't see Lambert deciding to go for footballing reasons. In any case he definitely won't drop a division having taken so long to get to the PL.

He's said he really likes the club and the area, and I think he really likes our style of football as well - and his vital part in it.

His only chance of playing in Europe with those two is trying to catch up to one of their 'passes'.

He's much better off here and he knows it.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - due to our recent makeover I can only see the option Rickie leaving in the summer to bring in a "sexier" replacement to take us to the "next level."

Hope I'm wrong though. :(

The club know how good he is and where we would be without him. By all means bring another, better striker in but that doesnt mean RL should leave.

I actually think its the opposite. This manger rates rickie higher than Adkins.

True. And I wouldn't underestimate his value off the pitch, because he certainly seems to be a/the central figure for a lot of the other players - older and younger.

If he goes down the pecking order and has to spend the greater part of 90 minutes on the bench week in week out, who can blame him for wanting to? :(

We definitely need RL next season. It would have to be a ludicrous offer for us to sell him.

Agreed, but what is that number? Needs to be more from a long term investment perspective than his short term worth.

Guess we would all say no to 3m but most would accept 15m. To replace him with a younger player of relative quality would cost probably around 12-13m, so based on that 8m would be an attractive offer, essentially making the cost of a younger model around 4m. Of course there are risks with any replacement, but thats all part of the game. 8m for RL though is good business.

One thing that does make me lose my cool, is the media assumption that if some, supposedly " rich club " (for that read - deeply in debt) even suggests that they wave a couple of £mill. under our noses, we will bow down to their golden a**es.... and hand over our best ass ets ....(there you are I can write it - in context)...... to them, they are very much - in error.

Rickie recently proclaimed his desire to finish his career at SFC. One thing we can be sure of, is that if he does ever leave Saints..his career will be finished..if he has to play with some of the donkeys at Wham.

So hear this! ..we don't need your money....so take off! If some of the upcoming games go the way they might....it'll be we who are above Wham, and they who are fighting relegation.

Much better, I agree with your points too - it's lazy journalism to link selling the likes of Bale, AOC, Walcott etc for many millions of pounds is a good business move for a L1 or Championship club, but terrible business for a Premiership club trying to make strides forward, without considering why a club might sell.

I wouldn't say Lamberts career is finished should he move to WHam, but it certainly won't improve. The only way he would take a step forward in his career is moving to a bigger club and getting a regular starting place, which isn't likely. A sideways (at this stage) move to WHam would do him no favours.

If we turned down, 5.5 mill in the summer were want at least that and more, i personally think he will stay, but we may be tempted to sell if we get a bid of 7 million, however hes worth IMO about 10-12 mill hes a key part of this team and looks every bit a prem player for a side outside the top 6/7 sides.

Here's an interesting stat about wham

(Incidentally, on December 11 when Allardyce dismissed first team coach Wally Downes, West Ham's record in all competitions for the season was Won 7, Drawn 4, Lost 7. Since his departure it is Won 2, Drawn 3, Lost 7. With Downes, West Ham lost 38.8 per cent of their matches; without him 58.3 per cent. In the league, 1.37 points per game were gained on average with Downes, equating to 52 points over the season which last year would have taken a team to eighth place; versus 0.8 points per game without Downes, equating to 30 points over a season and certain relegation. Still, as long as Carroll doesn't leave...)

They keep that up they will struggle to get to 40 points...
