Jamie White - ex Saints Academy- Now Salisbury

I think I saw him play for the first team. It was Derby away and pretty sure we won 1-0. Svenson was playing CB in his latest and last (for saints) come back. JW played left side of a 3 man attack and looked really good. He was small, quick and pretty direct. I thought he was going to be a good player for us. I am sure he will make his way up ala Wade Elliot and probably end up in the Championship (all this from one match that he may not have even played in - I know genius eh?).

Seems like a lot of decent talent was lost to the despair of that period of 2008-admin.

Then again it maybe that our dire future back then was the only reason they got some game time...

Our insistence on fielding the entire youth team for chunks of 2008 almost certainly ruined some of them - but without a statistical breakdown of every youth team in the last (say) 15 years and what level they peaked at / most appearances at there's no real way of categorising. Some kind of points system for major leagues and cups per player... a multiplier for academy appearances, then totalled up to rate the youth teams to find out which were the most and least successful.

Not that I'm going to do it, but there's the methodology. ;)

I seem to remember seeing him on the wing in a reserve game and whilst he had decent technique he was too lightweight. The other team's winger kept leaning into him and easing him off the ball on a lot of occasions. It led to White being pretty ineffective.

After being subbed for Alex Ostlund their player tried the same trick on AO and ended up flat on his back.

Looked like a quality prospect and I'm sure he was linked with Real Madird when he was a teenager!

Looked quite good when thrown into our first team under portaloo but really wasn't ready for the pressure that was heaped on him as being the next big thing. I seem to remember he crumbled after giving away a penalty and steadily faded away. That brutal introduction to the first team combined with some nasty injuries seemed to finish him before he really got started here I remember being disapointed he was released when we sunk to League 1 as I thought he had real potential in a stroner more stable team.

His recent form suggests a return to league football before to long and he's still young enough to carve out a reasonable league career.

Didn't ever see him play, except that Blackpool game - (when he wasn't the worst on the pitch that day either) ....but followed reports / results when he did.

Was fairly typical of an Academy lad who took the world by storm when he was 16..... but never quite made it to become another Alex O-C, when he reached maturity.

IF you look closely enough, you can see familiar names in L1 /L2 and Conference sides who were at the Academy / youth level at sometime in the past ..but never QUITE made it " big time "

I did a quick run-through the personnel in the L1 sides recently, and found more than a dozen clubs who had a former Saints junior in their squad.

Hey...I never post on here and generally lurk, but i'll have a chip in on this one. I have watched him a fair few times this year when Saints haven't been playing and he really does have something about him. Not the biggest of lads but strong for his size, moves really well of the ball and makes acres of space for himself. He definitely isn't playing at his correct level, could definitely do a job at League 1, but not sure about any higher. Reminds me of when Salisbury had Matt Tubbs playing for them for ages before he got whisked off to better things!

Far too good to be playing in Blue Square South. Quite a lot of ex-Saints academy in that league, some like Jamie White look destined for the football league, others, like Callum McNish look destined for sunday league.

Jordace Holder-Spooner is also playing in that division, but isn't getting much game time at Basingstoke, probably due to his attitude

Didn't want to start a new thread, so though this might be the best place to comment on ex-youth players. Harlee Dean having a very solid game at the bridge this afternoon for Brentford. Some class blocks in front of his goal. First half at least.

Even if he was never good enough to stay and play at the top level, it is good to see him playing well at his current level/club.

..of course, very few Saints fans would have seen Harlee Dean play any game in a Saints shirt, but he is typical of the type of up-and-coming players (Dickson, Seaborne, Forte and Barnard also come to mind) who were signed around the time of two successful L1 seasons ....when few people - except perhaps Nicola Cortese - expected our elevation to the Prem. to come quite so quickly - hence some of these players are still on our books, with valid contracts for another year or more.

Had we still been in the Championship. I expect that they might have been fairly regular selections in the first team squad / or at least/ on the bench.

Those two rapid promotions meant the standard of our opponents has increased at a greater rate, than the development of players (such as Dean and those mentioned above).

Nice for the club and fans, but tough on players who have struggled to improve themselves from L1 standard ...upto the next level in such a short time.

  • 1 year later...

Good news for Jamie. Hope he can help bring the Gas back to league football. Jamie has had terrible luck with injuries. Those who saw him at Tyro level knew he had the potential to go on to play at professional level. A couple of years older than Danny Ings. Danny never stood out in the same way as Jamie although Danny always looked the best player of his age group. Danny has worked incredibly hard and had the breaks at the right time. It just shows how turning potential into the real thing is a fickle thing.

Good luck to both of them, it is great to see local lads do well.

I notice ex-Academy player Jamie White, now at Salisbury and top scorer in the Blue Square South. He did make one appearance for the first team. Did anyone see him in any academy games? What was he like then?

I like to check on line now and then to how how Jamie is doing and pass this onto his Dad (Biological Father) who is living in Thailand if not managing another super yacht, he did have a trial at Chelsea years ago who wanted to sign him but elected to go with saints as it was his home team; it was Pardew in his first season that let Jamie go and probably due to those injuries as some have said, but he done great at Winchester and now at Salisbury, who knows we may have another Lambert, as long as he does not have to screw lids onto beetroot jars.

Does anyone know if we still have any sell on rights to these young ex Saints players?

Any player released by Saints means there can't be a sell on clause as Saints haven't sold them to anyone and they are free agents. In any case White has played for a number of clubs since he left Saints 4 years ago.

That little **** scored a very late equalizer for Salisbury against Chester on the last day of the season. It was a nothing game for Salisbury but Chester needed to win to guarantee Conference safety. His late goal sent Chester down. :-(

Never mind, Hereford will save Chester...how do they feel about it you should ask?!

You were right. Pretty happy that Chester will live to fight another day in the Conference. Having seen Chester City kicked out of the league 5 years ago I can sympathise with Hereford though. On a positive note Chester FC are a superb example of what can be achieved. 3 Promotions in their first 3 seasons put them back where they were when the original club folded.
