Lazlo78 Posted 13 February, 2013 Posted 13 February, 2013 I was reading about Forte scoring for Blades and immediately thought about his two goals against MK Dons. That half an hour is his legacy here - he will never be a Saints great or one of the heroes, but he probably won't be forgotten either because of the perceived importance of those goals. That got me thinking about Mickey Evans - not a Saints legend or a long standing servant of the club either, but he is still a popular player because of the perceived importance of those 4 goals that earned him POTM in the PL i 1997. Are there other players like this; players that never really got a career going at Saints but for some reason or other left a lasting impression, a touch of brilliance, an important contribution - something that means that they are not the first to crop up in the "Players we forgot" thread Disclaimer: I haven't really thought this through. Maybe there are way too many for this topic to make sense, or maybe too few? Can the great minds of this forum think of someone who would fit the description?
Badger Posted 13 February, 2013 Posted 13 February, 2013 Might be unfair to put him in here, but Paul Gilchrist springs to mind. Bought as a young centre forward to take over from Big Ron as I recall, he never came close to fulfilling that, but Lawrie converted him to a midfield player, and two momentous contibutions spring to mind. A goal of individual brilliance v WBA in a cup replay, and then of course the first goal in the semi-final.
Dig Dig Posted 13 February, 2013 Posted 13 February, 2013 Delgado for the 3-2 against Arsenal springs to mind
Barry Sanchez Posted 13 February, 2013 Posted 13 February, 2013 Dowie with that goal against West Ham.
Barry Sanchez Posted 13 February, 2013 Posted 13 February, 2013 Oooh Terry Hurlock simply for his flowing locks.........................
Hockey_saint Posted 14 February, 2013 Posted 14 February, 2013 Francis Benali....I've not seen many a worse player play for Saints than him, but hey, he's a Southampton born-n-bred boy and bestest mates with Le Tissier! Ohhhhh I'm gonna get some stick for that choice ...did I mention he's alledgedly suing the club?
Danish Saint Posted 14 February, 2013 Posted 14 February, 2013 David Prutton. Was hailed as the next CM for England, Oakleys replacement and everyone at the club had such high hopes for him. Completely lost his head and got send off a couple of times in a few relegation battles. He wasn't a legend as such, but just because of the expectations, he will not be forgotten.
Winchester Red Posted 14 February, 2013 Posted 14 February, 2013 Ronnie Ekelund - Loved that headed goal after MLT's shot came back off the post and crossbar
Andre Posted 14 February, 2013 Posted 14 February, 2013 Billy Sharp Definitely one of the most recent ones, invaluable to our promotion run and a massive shame he didn't carry on with us; big fan favourite as well, and seems to really value his time here.
Toomer Posted 14 February, 2013 Posted 14 February, 2013 Frank Saul came as a make weight when Martin Chivers went to Spuds.

Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 14 February, 2013 Posted 14 February, 2013 (edited) Gordon Hobson. Decent lower league scorer who Saints bought to partner Colin Clarke. Did ok but soon lost out to the emerging Rod Wallace, Alan Shearer and MLT. Seem to recall him getting a hat-trick against someone once, might have been Villa. Just checked: it was Man City. ozzmeister Posted 14 February, 2013 Posted 14 February, 2013 The Mule Jason Euell! Was continuously slated, but then I remember him going on a scoring run towards the end of one of our CCC seasons.
Kingsland Codger Posted 14 February, 2013 Posted 14 February, 2013 Casey Keller. Forever remembered for that save when Matt Taylor smacked a screamer towards the top corner from close range with only a minute or so to go.
pingwing Posted 14 February, 2013 Posted 14 February, 2013 Good shout I remember the day I found out we signed him, a mate of mine was mid rant about how Wednesday were the team to watch for the next season (and promptly got relegated I think) then screamed NO HES RUBBISH at the TV. Always thought he was a handy striker...
Ashley Grute Posted 14 February, 2013 Posted 14 February, 2013 Papa Waigo for his 2 late goals v Norwich in the JPT
Ashley Grute Posted 14 February, 2013 Posted 14 February, 2013 Crouch for his last min pen v the skates
PhilippineSaint Posted 14 February, 2013 Posted 14 February, 2013 David Peach Those old enough will know what I mean
KK the 2nd Posted 14 February, 2013 Posted 14 February, 2013 Keith Cassells. Part of a double swoop by Lawrie that saw Cassells brought in along with Mark Wright. One went on to glory ...
St Lej Posted 14 February, 2013 Posted 14 February, 2013 Simon Charlton Hopefully this thread descends into everyone just randomly naming anyone that comes into their head that only played a season or 2 for us and wasn't completely ****.
Rational Rich Posted 14 February, 2013 Posted 14 February, 2013 Mickey Evans. For his goal scoring heroics in our 96/97 survival season.
david in sweden Posted 14 February, 2013 Posted 14 February, 2013 Mickey Evans. For his goal scoring heroics in our 96/97 survival season. ........and a valuable few goals in a very short career span with Saints. only 4 goals from 8 games and few sub.apps. but they were enough to lift us off the bottom at Easter, and end up with 16th place. Bad luck that he lost his form at the start of the following season just as KEVIN Davies came good.
Dimond Geezer Posted 14 February, 2013 Posted 14 February, 2013 Keith Cassells. Part of a double swoop by Lawrie that saw Cassells brought in along with Mark Wright. One went on to glory ... That's a good call, If I recall correctly Cassells was the transfer target & Wright was a make weight.
chocco boxo Posted 14 February, 2013 Posted 14 February, 2013 Benali goal line clearence vrs Millwall sent us on our way to Cardiff. Hughie Fisher sent us on our way to Wembley 76'. I always rated Peter Wells for a unsung hero.
Crazy Diamond Posted 14 February, 2013 Posted 14 February, 2013 Saganowski. Never have we been so desperate to sign someone permanently, only for them to disappoint so spectacularly.
david in sweden Posted 14 February, 2013 Posted 14 February, 2013 Saganowski. Never have we been so desperate to sign someone permanently, only for them to disappoint so spectacularly. one of very few players to have scored a hat-trick AWAY from home..happens only a few times every decade.
Colinjb Posted 14 February, 2013 Posted 14 February, 2013 Wayne Thomas, for one strike of his right foot alone. Giving old nemesis Roy Keane something to think about.
Crazy Diamond Posted 14 February, 2013 Posted 14 February, 2013 one of very few players to have scored a hat-trick AWAY from home..happens only a few times every decade. Good shout

Worth remembering for that one game at home to Liverpool. He ran the show that day.
Appy Posted 14 February, 2013 Posted 14 February, 2013 Worth remembering for that one game at home to Liverpool. He ran the show that day. Will probably be remembered more for his ref incident and his miss at West Brom.
Colinjb Posted 14 February, 2013 Posted 14 February, 2013 Will probably be remembered more for his ref incident and his miss at West Brom. Well, I did use the word, 'worth' remembering, rather then 'lest we forget.'
