According to this article and the head of operations for FC Tokyo, they are in talks to sign Lee from us. For me, it would be no real loss. Didn't really impress me when he came initially, just did a lot of running and has only scored the 2 goals since he's been here. Fair enough he's been injured but Sharp had a better goal record (goals:games ratio).

And an editor for Kick Off Asia (their main football magazine) tweeted last night:

JohnnyDuerden: Talk in Japan that Tadanari Lee will leave Southampton for FC Tokyo. Needs to go somewhere to get some playing time

As much promise as he showed, if at 27 he isn't getting in the side I can't see it happening for him (especially considering we'll be looking to sign even better quality players in the summer).

I'd like to see him stay in England if possible though, get a proper crack at it and see what he does.

Isn't having a proper crack now?

Why put him in the team if he is not up to it

I was very impressed with him at the start, his injury record was unfortunate and not his fault.

If we'd started the season better ...he'd likely have had a few more games......but not now ...unfortunately NOT......but I will always remember THAT goal !

Been half-expecting for this sort of story to break. He's reportedly been unhappy for a while - hearsay suggests he was promised a rather more... well, shall we say 'involved' role. Whether he's purely been held back by injury or is simply not up to it seems difficult to call. People say he didn't impress but his minutes on the field for our first team can't total much.

Shame in a way if true but on the other hand we must be approaching a tidy-up of personnel?

Story was doing the rounds a few weeks ago, didn't happen and won't now before end of season. Has been on the bench last few games under the Sherriff, I suspect he is not going anywhere. FCT were trying to sign someone else, was it Drogba? Sounds like they are a bunch of chancers.

Apologies if I'm way off the mark here but obviously brought in for his footballing skills but I heard somewhere that it was also to start establishing a fan base in Asia too. With two Japanese players it seems we are making headway with that in terms of becoming a global brand (perhaps part of the "project?").

would like to see him fit & get some game time but I think this season is possibly too much to ask after injuries & given that we need players who are used to playing together to get us to safety. Perhaps if & when we reach the hallowed safety zone & hopefully before the last game of season then if he is featuring on the bench then he may get a run out. Same applies to Mayuka. Don't think he will feature too much this season but may become a key figure next season.

I suggest that his less-than-impressive showing in our Leeds (away) cup match may have been part of the reason why he hasn't played at all in the Prem League this season...?

Were the Barnsley, Derby and Leeds games last season screened live in Stockholm then?

We signed him when we were in another league (like Sharp) and we've just moved up a couple gears without them, its tough on them both. I wish them both the very best where ever they go but I can't see a way in here

Another player who has suffered by our immediate promotion and not having more time in the Championship. Harding, Hammond, Barnard, Sharp etc.

Good Riddance. Never rated him.

What an immature statement.. he's not appeared in the premier league and certainly did ok last year. Obviously the NA regime did not think he was up to it but MP has him on the bench so all is not lost

Was that when he had just returned from a long injury lay-off and the whole second-string team had an off night?

I personally wouldn't be so quick to write him off. From what little I saw of him last year I thought he had an excellent touch and shot, and was a very intelligent player. His goal against Derby and the crucial part he played in setting up Lambert for our snatch and grab away at Leeds are enough for me to believe he has got something about him. It's just a shame he hasn't had a decent run in the team to prove himself.

Isn't it possible to be impressed by a player through listening to the game on the radio and then watching extended highlights? Sometimes they even showed the whole 90 on Saintsplayer.

I hoped he would feature more and had a sneaky feeling that with games and patience (as we've shown JRod and others who didn't impress at first) he would come good. His footballing brain and movement off the ball were always a level above most others in our team and that, IMO, would have suited this league well.

But, that said, we have others who are doing very well on a regular basis and now is not the time to try and bring a new starter into the mix, so a move does seem the right thing to do.

his screamer against Derby and the more importantly the knock down for Lamberts volley in THAT game at Elland Rd which for me was the real turning point and the time we started to really believe last year was our year

Posted

I always thought he looked like a slightly better Barnard myself. Not big, skillfull, good in the air or jonno quick. Ran around a lot though. Could still go out on loan to championship side, but that would depend on whether MP rates Mayuka.

I seldom listen to the radio..... but have good streams to choose from every match.

What's the problem with that?

How many appearances up front this season? Will do a job of course, but don't tell me you relish them starting, ESP Mayuka. Newcastle have Ameobi, Villa have Bent, Reading Le Fondre etc

Lets see how Mayuka performs under MP before we start writing him off shall we ?

Considering how one or two players have upped their game considerably (Davis, Guly v Everton) since the new manager arrived maybe given a chance this guy will too !

Weirdest post this year seeing as they were all ahead of Lee anyway and he made zero Prem apps all season ie NOTHING has changed.

We are pretty ok in attacking areas IMO. We only play with one striker and aside from those mentioned (you forgot JR) Ramirez could play up top if needed...

Who said I had written him off? I just don't think, yet at least, he is the strongest off the bench choice compared to our rivals, thats all.

Weirdest post this year suggests you don't read too many other posts, when making your 6500 comments. I didnt forget anyone, but JR and RL are often starting together. Ramirez up front as sole striker would be interesting. Lee was injured at the start of the season and personally at least, I have seen him play more minutes overall than Mayuka, and in terms of potential I rated Lee higher.

Its a strange decision with a few months of the season to go. If we don't get any injuries, I agree its not an issue

Sounds like this is a requested move with the World Cup in mind. He's meant to have met with the Japan coach after the City game to talk about his international future. I'm sure he'll have a great World Cup and come back being worth a few million... Yen.

He was our fifth choice striker and has played precisely zero minutes of Premier League football this season.

His most important moment for us in 14 months was a cushioned header at Leeds for Lambert to volley in.

He has been unlucky but we won't miss him.

Mayuka has far more potential and has scored goals at a far higher level than Lee ever has, plus is much younger.

Meh! Lee has played what 5 games for us in the championship and did ok. Not amazing just ok. His injury lost him his place and has never recovered. I think Mayuka and Guly offer more than Lee does, Lee would never play and he probably wants to for the sake of his international career. No big loss for us though as he's looked awful this season when he has played. Atleast Mayuka has shown a bit of promise and has about 6 years on his side.

How do you come to that? Mayuka is 22 and scored like 30 goals in 50 games for young boys a better level than lee's old team. Lee is 27, 5 years older and scored barely 25 in over 70 appearances. Mayuka has far more potential.

I liked what I saw of him in the Championship, love how everyone says he's not Premier League quality when they've not seen him play in it.

I think his injury cost him dearly, but he is perhaps one of a number of deadwood players we should have shifted last year. Might have made it easier to make more signings in the two transfer windows, especially with limited registrations.

Doubt he'll play for us again, the loan will probably become or lead to a permanent deal in the future. Should that be the case, I thank him for his contribution and wish him well.

Even in the championship?

I think its on something called the interweb. Apparently there are shed loads of things on the interweb. Including streams of footy. Streams and streams of it. Even in Swedeland.

As I said, my view was based on watching him play v watching Mayuka. I appreciate the stats. Mayuka may prove to be an astute signing but so far he reminds me of Nicky Banger. Lee has not played any premier league games so harsh to write him off
