The Project.

Made in Southampton

Recommended Posts

So at the very beginning NA and NC spoke about a project and this word has been mentioned randomly ever since. MP even mentioned the ‘Project’ at his unveiling.

I was wondering what this project was in its current form?

League Ones project was to be in the Premiership within 5 years …….. Tick.

Projects change and evolve with time and enviroment so the Project and its conception at the beginning when ML and NC came on the scene would be very different to the one we have now. Does anyone know what this ‘Project’ is currently?

My interpretation.

Phase one: Get to the premier league. Done

Phase two: Qualify for Europe via the league. In Progress

No actual idea of Cortese's plans of course so all baseless speculation... but I suspect the next part of the plan is to establish ourselves as a regular european cup team, which is probably not entirely unreasonable if it is Europa League we are thinking of.

Cortese also said that his '5 year plan' etc is more than just a league position etc. It's infrastructure and so on as well. So maybe a bigger stadium? I guess the training ground revamp is part of it, and probably something to do with the academy as well.

I think NC wants to establish Southampton. I don't think anybody seriously thinks we'll qualify for the Champions League, certainly not regularly. Realistically we could win a tropohy or two and/or qualify for Europa through the league. I'd be over the moon with that.

You can throw your "Dell like mentality" and "Everton did it once" all you like. We're Southampton.

The 5 year plan was never just about getting back to the Prem, it was about the club as a whole. This is emphasized by the fact that after our first season in League One Cortese said we were actually well ahead of schedule despite missing out on the play-offs. With this in mind, we probably still have another year and a half or so before he moves onto the next big stage.

If you ask me, the first part was all about preparing the club to challenge for the top 6. We've got a young, talented team and manager, training and youth facilities up there with the best in the country (as well as the youth players proving the investment was worth it) and a stadium that is perfectly sized for what we want to achieve.

Next part of his plan is most likely about actually getting into the top 6, and for me that is the biggest challenge yet - even more tough than getting back to the Prem.

Life is full of planners, dreamers and sneerers.

Cortese is unquestionably in the first group - with the balls, brains and probably the funding to back it up.

I'm happy enough to sit in the second group because we've already come a hell of a long way and, based on that and various signals (such as who we've signed and might be interested in signing), there's nothing wrong with dreaming when it comes to footy. Without dreams, supporting a team is rather pointless, isn't it?

I just thank God I'm not in the third group; what a sad and hollow existence that must be.

The main problem is the "dreamers" have decided that their dream is the only allowable dream.

Your last line shows you are, in fact, a sneerer.

Line 1 is another of your straw man inventions because I've never seen anything like that on here - just a big bunch of people happy to go along for the ride, and a little group who sneer.

Line 2 may well be true, but I reserve that perspective for people like that because it's the only language they understand.

Anyway, for me it's onwards and upwards. I choose to believe in "The Plan" and see where it takes us.

I've outlined my dream and been sneered at. The fact you call it a straw man proves my point.

"People like that" - judging people's entire lives on the back of whether they are fussed about their football club getting into the Champions League. Breathtaking stuff. Yes, its me putting up straw men. Well done.

Thank you.

BTW "judging people's entire lives" is another of your straw men. I'm judging their persona on here, and it's all IMO anyway. They could be sneerers on here and dreamers somewhere else, or brave with the keyboard but chicken-sh*t in real life. Or vice versa in both cases.

Whatever. I made my point. You disagreed with it. Life goes on.

Isn't it great to have ambition though? After all those horrible years, we can actually look up. Even if we're not safe and could be playing championship football next season, I still look forward to what Southampton FC has in store for me as a fan. It's exciting and I'll make the most of that.

I think we all have a Dell sized mentality to an extent, not just those who think we will never qualify for the CL because we have never before.

The vast majority of Saints fans saw the fact that we were 3 points clear of the relegation places as a reason to keep Nige in charge. Cortese saw it as a reason to fire him.

I doubt we will ever qualify but it's certainly not impossible and is where Cortese will be aiming.

Seems like continental managers use the term project a lot simply to describe their employment. If Po used the word "proyecto" it can mean venture as well as what we would call a project or plan. In any event a project has a beginning, an end, and a bit in the middle, which at Southampton involves winning all your matches or Cortese will terminate it. Yeah, so Po has a project and Cortese is building for the future.

Not a straw man. Your words.

Frazer Richardson would definitely do a much better job on Ronaldo than Rafel.

Yeah I mean we could have lent them SDR to pull back a striker & get booked once he got past him instead of Rafael.

At least SDR might have made more of his shooting chance from a corner in the 1st half

BUT, seriously what a cracking CF goal that was (were you watching SRL) and from a winger at that. Hate Ronaldo but.......

Wow the usual trolls come in ruin another perfectly good thread.

So anyway back to the subject..........

Yep - I just wonder how many of us just don't bother commenting more as the kids kick off all the time? Me for one! FFS this is a Saints forum, so let's stick to Saints comments - if you for what ever reason disagree with a "Saints" related comment then say so (no harm doing it nicely either!).

For personal comments and worse, why not go to your own part of the forum some where else - I am sure the Mods would create your own "mine is bigger than your's" part of the site, to stop boring the utter crap out of those of us who just what to banter about the mighty Saints!

Loving "The Project" so far BTW :-)

Champions League is a target, as is winning the League. whether it's achievable or not - well, I guess we'll find out over the coming years. Saying it is impossible is simply not true. Anything can and does happen, albeit infrequently.

Do you think Wimbledon supporters thought hey would ever play in the top division of the English league when they were a non-league team? Do you think Blackburn really thought they could win the league before Jack Walker invested his millions?

Man City and Chelsea could go bust or lose their backing. Man Utd could lose their players in a plane crash (what? impossible...). Liverpool could employ a succession of shyte managers...oh wait, that DID happen...

If you were a Man City fan in the 89th minute of the last league game of last season, would you REALLY have bet your house on them winning the League?

Some things happen slowly, some happen in almost an instant, but never give up the dream :)

I'm just enjoying the ride and praying that we really do have the funds to do what we are currently doing and that we're never, ever, going to be a Poopey

I still find it a bit cringe making when they use the word "project" .... A bit like calling your loved ones "human resources"

....happy valentines day

Isn't it to avoid relegation first? We are only 4 points from the dreaded 'drop' chaps. All this talk of CL is a bit fanciful, no?

Yep, wthout a doubt. I think the problem is that folks are confusing possibl with probabilty etc. Even if we invested 100mil in the summer in players, there is no guarrantee we would end up in the top 6 - all that would happen is the probability would increase.

Everyone I think appreciates that at this current time the probability of a CL is extremely low, even if its possible. NC's 'project' is all about improving the probabilty that e could at some point be competitive enough to push into the top 6 and then who knows -The infrastructure, academy investments and his direct and 'ruthless' decision making are all designed to improve our chances.

Of course many other clubs are doing the same thing at the same time so, its far from easy to see exactly how its going to make it more probable. Some interpret this as impossible and laugh, others see the fact that we at least have a chairman that has set a high goal rather than just accepting our 'natural place' as a positive thing...and given how far we have come in the last 3 years, would not put it past him. He sems to have a structured and phased strategy and is not afraid of how this will go down with some fans when 'difficult' decisions need to be made. He will make mistakes, luck and other variables will play a big part, but is very odd that some seem to mock the very idea...

As to those who laugh and poor scorn...I can only think that you have your priorities wrong - the only reason for even being concerned about the reality, possibilty or probability seems because you are overly concerned with other fans laughing at you/us.... fragile egos... let them laugh and enjoy the ride.

If there was ever a goal for "leapt like a salmon" that was it. Imperious header.

Anwya, this seems like a thread for MLG.

This for me, just enjoy the ride wherever it may be. First game on MOTD last week happy stuff. Would prefer to try and fail rather than not try at all.
