Surprised this hasn't been put on here before. Good old Rickie wants to finish his career at Southampton. Now where are all those people saying we wanted to get rid of him in the summer...

Rickie Lambert wants to stay at Southampton for the rest of his career.

The 30-year-old striker arrived at St Mary's from Bristol Rovers in 2009 and has helped the club rise from League One to the Premier League.

Lambert, who has scored 99 goals for the club, is the highest English scorer in the Premier League this season, leading to reported interest from others.

However, the Liverpudlian has quashed such talk, saying he would like to end his playing days at the south coast club.

"My family are happy here and I am very happy," Lambert told The Sun.

"It has been a special three and a half years and I would love to finish my career at Southampton.

"The club's ambitions are very high. Southampton is going to be an exciting place over the next few years."

Adkins wanted to get rid of him but as he's history now it doesn't matter

When you see lambert put in 90 mins like he did sat. Just brilliant

Makes it odd how he was dropped and/or played out of position so many times and even subbed

I get that niggles and fitness may play apart but not all the times he was left out or moved out of position

The argument that lambert can't play a lone striker for 90 mins is clearly laughable

Something seemed to have happened between the 2. Starting him on the bench, right up to his last game. Leads the line every game now.

I wondered that having read Rickie's interview in the programme on Saturday. He was really gutted about being left on the bench first match of the season. It puzzled me then and still puzzles me now. As much as I was a fan of NA there is no getting away from the fact some of his selections and treatment of Rickie this season bordered on weird.

I always wondered if Adkins had some kind of pyscho-babble theory that leaving SRL out would make him stronger in some way? :?

Wonder if Rickie gets to keep the captains armband when Adam returns to the starting line up. Imo Rickie should keep it.

He should definitely keep it. Lambert as captain just feels right. Plus there's no guarantee that Lallana can slot straight back in when he's fully fit, and I don't think he was a great choice anyway. He's young and injury prone, and doesn't seem to be very vocal. Lambert has been the main main man for coming up to 4 years now, he leads by example and I'm sure everyone looks up to him. Long may it continue.

SRL should keep the captaincy. As much as I like AL I'd prefer him to not have the added burden TBH.

He is a class player who will hopefully just get better with age. I hope he is able to stay at the top of his game for at least a good 3 or 4 years more and does finish his playing career here. If he does It would be great if he was offered a role on the coaching staff after his playing days are over.

I could imagine Pochettino telling the young defenders that if they make rash challenges they'll get an hour of 1-on-1 duels with Rickie. That'll teach them to stay focused... ;)

Although he states he wants to stay, that may be a bit wide of the mark. I expect him to be gone at the end of the season. Some Championship side will come in and offer him silly money to join and he will take it. The Club could also make a reasonable profit on him. I say he's gone at the end of the season.

Why would he go to the NPC?

I could see someone willing to break the bank for a tilt at the Sky money? Couldn't you? Who else is there with his credentials?

Why on earth would lambert at 31 move down from the prem when it has taken his whole career to get here

Why on earth would we sell him.?

If we are that insane, there would be a fair few decent prem clubs willing to snatch him off our hands and pay him more than enough to ignore anything the NpC is unlikely to offer

The thought of lambert dropping down to the NpC next season is one of the most bizarre ideas on here... I have come up with some crackers myself

On the face of it, I don't deny you have a credible argument, however age is still very much a factor. More prone to injuries etc. He is proven in every way imaginable, and for a big enough pay day, I'd say he'd be more than tempted. Time will tell.

Utter garbage!!

Lambert for me has done more than le tiss. 2 promotions, wembley final and a much better goal record. Lambert 1 le tiss 2

I love rickie but he doesn't come anywhere close to what Matty did. 14 years at top flight rickie has almost 1.

Loving the notion that players are now jumping ship from the world's richest league to the NPower Championship "for the money".

Astounding stuff from, err, Captain Sensible.

Gents! I think you're all missing my point here! After around the age of 30, injuries are more prevalent than ever! At this level staying fit, performing week in week out, training all puts the 30+ year old right on the edge of injury! It takes longer to recover and regain fitness and results in a club paying wages whereby they can't rely on the player. He won't be offered a long extension.

He will not be on the kind of money that Cashley Cole, Gerrard, Lampard etc earn. He is in all likelihood one of the Prem's most modestly paid players.

Rickie, for his part, is proven at every level. An exceptional player who has regularly outperformed his expectation since arriving at the Saints. Any Championship Manager whose Chairman wants the riches of the Prem, will have Rickie on the top of their shopping list. Rickie will be in the enviable position to ask pretty much what he wants, because he comes with 30+ goals a season. Even in the Prem relegation places they all have their eye on him. Short Contract-High wages. He will want to make the most of career, hence I think he will go in Summer.

He has been a fantastic servant for the Club and deserves one last proper pay day! I don't think anyone would begrudge him that.

So the logic is because he can score goals at every level, be that the Championship or the Premiership (as he's proving at the moment) he will step down a league and demand whatever money he wants on a short-contract.

That, from a man who has never once shown as signs of being motivated by money, who has said he wants to play in the Premiership, who has said he wants to remain at Saints and who is already earning a very respectable wage.

It would take something of a personality transplant for this 'logic' to come true.

Loyalty is a two way street. It depends on what the club offer him to stay. Just an opinion.
