david in sweden Posted 11 February, 2013 Share Posted 11 February, 2013 (edited) ...it seems that ...(for Northern fans).....getting beat by Saints ..is the bottom of the barrel. There is much more publicity about Citeh's defeat than about Saints' win....which took my mind back to another time when Saints unsettled fans in that " wet city" up north. 1986.....we drew Manchester United in the 3rd round of the League Cup at Old Trafford. Backs to the wall, a good defensive display got us a goaless draw. REPLAY (at the Dell the next week)....Starting with a goal from George Lawrence, right on HT, we went 2-0 up through Danny Wallace, and then...in the last 15 mins...enter a cheeky, 18 y.o. sub named Matthew Le Tissier ...who proceeded to score TWICE. First one by lobbing the keeper, and a second a header (yes-header) from a corner. (This is how I like to remember him) Even a late United goal could'nt save manager Ron Atkinson - who got the chop back at OT. two days later - So where does this lead.? Well I don't expect to see Mancini thrown out onto the street this week, but if Citeh can't put the Leeds cup tie to bed this week with some degree of style, then he could be feeling rather uncomfortable, having been seen to have thrown the towel in on their chances of winning the Prem. League title after Saturday's mauling. Having some good memories of former glory days when we regularly took Liverpool to the cleaners, and stitched up Man U. a few times, can it be that some Northern clubs just don't " travel well " and always seem bring the " wrong colour of shirts, " or just have " a bad day at the office ".... whenever they come South? hasper57saint Posted 11 February, 2013 Share Posted 11 February, 2013 Nostalgia eh?The way in which some of the 'Reports' are coming out David in S is indicative of the intolerance many Hacks have towards Saints. A really good example of this is the Mirror Pull-out section today. It's absolute rubbish.Worded as if we weren't even there at the same time as this bunch of over rated, overpaid over hyped 'players'. We absolutely mauled them from the start and yet 'Citeh gifted us the game'. Pull the other one it's got bells on.

It's always been this way so I for one am not surprised by the classic "let's give credit to Southampton, they played well BUT....." (only for Saints not to be mentioned again). It's better in a way, keeps wider attention and expectations from us. Let's hope a few more teams decide to "gift" us games this season, they are all welcome. CanadaSaint Posted 11 February, 2013 Share Posted 11 February, 2013 It's all very well for Mancini to go ballistic on his overpaid superstars but at some point he needs to look in two other places. One is the other dressing room, because he came up against a very good and underrated team on Saturday, and they deservedly kicked his team's ass. He can lament the errors until he goes blue in the face, but his team caved-in under Saints pressure all over the pitch. Barry's O.G. came minutes after a very similar move ended with Puncheon shooting over when he should have scored, so Barry panicked at a key moment. The second place he needs to look is the mirror, because he failed to heed the pointers available from our last 3 games. He took us lightly and paid the price. I hope everyone else does that, but they won't after Saturday.

Bearsy Posted 11 February, 2013 Share Posted 11 February, 2013 hope he gets sacked so we can add another premier league scalping to the season, we've only got Mark Hughes greying curls stapled to the back of trophy cabinet at present.
Window Cleaner Posted 11 February, 2013 Share Posted 11 February, 2013 I dont know why his team isnt the only one to of been played off the park by us lately just the first to lose ! I think most people in football just see us as bottom grubbers ad infinitum, few internationals, no household names. Doubt if Mancini has ever heard of half of our players. Trouble is they're totally wrong, we are near th bottom because of our awful start but our last 16 results would put us easily in the top half, somewhere between Everton and Swansea.. shurlock Posted 11 February, 2013 Share Posted 11 February, 2013 Tbf, Mancini was very complimentary about us in the build up and said that he really sat up when he watched the everton and united games. If there was complacency, it rests with City's players and I get the impression that Mancini only has limited sway over them.

If there was complacency, it rests with City's players and I get the impression that Mancini only has limited sway over them. I remember thinking at the time that they were more in the way of normal pre-match platitudes, which - for us - was a good sign; in fact, I said to a friend at the time that I thought we had a really good chance of stuffing City based on how Mancini came across. You could be right about the limited sway but his team had all the hallmarks of a side that encountered something it didn't expect, and then didn't know how to adjust once they saw it. Either way, he needs to take his own responsibility as well as, and not instead of, berating his players in public.

SaintRobbie Posted 11 February, 2013 Share Posted 11 February, 2013 A couple more performances by Saints akin to the Man Ure and Man City game will make people sit up and take notice that actually Saints are an up and coming side. A lot of pundits are missing the point, but will soon change their minds. Man City didn't lose to Saints. Saint beat Man City. Fact.
