Riise's was sheer class, but you could at least see how it happened, air wasn't an easy ball to deal with.

I still have no idea what Barry was actually attempting, and why.

I don't think he knew himself. I suspect he was trying to put the ball out for a corner. It was comically slow. That's what can happen when you get worn down and hustled. Strachan used to say that when you get physically tired you don't think straight.

Many years ago at the Dell, a guy called Shaw (forget his first name but he had strange, short dreadlocks) playing for Crystal Palace, scored with a pathetic back pass in the first minute !

It was as bad as the Barry one yesterday !

Long time ago. Texaco cup v Rangers in about 1975. Rangers defender lobbed the ball back from 30-40 yards out and it sailed over the keepers head into the net

Not Saints but the best own goal ever was scored by Keith Weller playing for Leicester against I don't know about thirty years ago.

Not much love for that MK Dons effort so far but I laughed my arse off at the time. One centre half smacking the ball at the other, great coordination.

Also not really a classic goal as such but when John O'shea scored on the last day of 05 to give us the lead against Man Utd I went a little bit nuts.

Alec Lindsay for Liverpool in September 1970 won the game 1-0 for us at the Dell with a magnificent long range header

I remember watching that game as a boy. Wasn't that the match that led to Bill Shankley accusing us of playing "alehouse football"? I think he thought that Lindsay was fouled as he made the header.

Terry Paine shoved him as he was about to head it out. It flew backwards into the net. There was a great photo on the front of the next home match programme.

That is exactly what Shankly alleged. although rarely for those days there was film of the goal and it showed there was no contact. They used to use as the background film on the Friday evening day by Day when they ran through the fixtures for southern teams for the weekend.
