Wiggles31 Posted 10 February, 2013 Share Posted 10 February, 2013 Can't remember seeing a Saints team with such high levels of fitness during a game. They were running full pelt right to the final whistle, every player. We blew the champions of England away with our fitness. So impressive. Never seen Lambert play at that rate for 90 mins. Am I right in thinking I heard the Sherriff has really increased the training regime? How MP has impressed since coming here. Next Newcastle who have two legs of the UEFA cup before we play them. Fancy MP's first away win for that. COYR!!!

Crab Lungs Posted 10 February, 2013 Share Posted 10 February, 2013 They're doing double sessions under the Poch now and it's beginning to show. WGS was the best I'd seen our fitness levels at, if we only had a one-goal lead I was still confident that we'd see it out and nine times out of ten, we did, comfortably. John Boy Saint Posted 10 February, 2013 Share Posted 10 February, 2013 J-Rod was hanging at the end, but he worked like a dog the whole game. I must admit to play with that intensity for 97 minutes was very impressive, but there was a lot of intelligent making the ball do the work. 2 weeks before Newcastle on last nights performance we should be immense by then. shurlock Posted 10 February, 2013 Share Posted 10 February, 2013 As MP said the other day, we're not necessarily running anymore but running more intelligently.
Thedelldays Posted 10 February, 2013 Share Posted 10 February, 2013 the way we now play...we definitely need a good 16 players....as rotation/subs are going to be used

Perhaps Pardew had the right idea after all on that swiss tour.

Window Cleaner Posted 10 February, 2013 Share Posted 10 February, 2013 As MP said the other day, we're not necessarily running anymore but running more intelligently. he was gesturing to them to use their brains a bit towards the end. Might have been when Clyne looked to be rushing to take a throw in. After that he sponged the ball on his shirt for 10 to 15 seconds each time. Crab Lungs Posted 10 February, 2013 Share Posted 10 February, 2013 so Adkins' Saints fit wasn't really very fit at all. Perhaps Pardew had the right idea after all on that swiss tour. Well, I think as someone said above, they were fit (I think Pochettino mentioned that when he arrived) but now they're using that fitness to better effect by being intelligent with it. raucebysaint Posted 10 February, 2013 Share Posted 10 February, 2013 Yes i agree the fitness of the players yesterday was fantastic, it also shows what desire and determination can do. You could tell we wanted to win far more than the so called 'super stars'. Keep that up for the remaining games and we will be playing premier league football next season. Saint Garrett Posted 10 February, 2013 Share Posted 10 February, 2013 Another thing is that if you're pressing as a team then each player is probably doing less. Much more beneficial than the odd player pressing, as they end up shattered. We're all doing it as a team and it's causing oppos problems. Be surprised if we don't use 14 players per game though now on.
Avenue Saint Posted 10 February, 2013 Share Posted 10 February, 2013 So far the most obvious thing to me is the apparent increase in fitness in a short space of time. Fully behind MP now after the performances against the top 5!

I noticed the ref had a go at Pochettino yesterday for taking forever to retrieve the ball from the dugout area late on in the game. Every little helps

That's a team performance as any.
tajjuk Posted 10 February, 2013 Share Posted 10 February, 2013 Is it me or has MP seemed to have made Lambert faster? first time in a long while I've seen him run in behind and actually not get caught up instantly.

And he can make the blind see, the deaf hear and the lame walk... More likely that Lescott and Garcia were positionally garbage.

Webby Posted 10 February, 2013 Share Posted 10 February, 2013 A consequence of this high intensity pressing, or the next step if you like, is to keep possession better in the first place. The more we keep the ball, the less we're pressing to win it back. But as has been said, it's intelligent running. Pressing in pairs or reducing the options to the man on the ball. That's what forces mistakes. It's no good one player pressing when the man on the ball can just turn and pass to a team mate. We're pressing intelligently so that we win the ball back or force a mistake quickly. The quicker we do that the sooner we can stop pressing and start playing. It's hard work I'm sure but it's highly effective.

The ref was so incompetent yesterday he probably did not realise that El Sheriffo would have needed an interpreter

We were incredibly fit under him which made us very hard to beat away from home due to the way he had us playing at the time. We're playing similar to that now but with more emphasis on playing football once we have the ball.
