European tour?

Probably worth avoiding in truth.

Qualifying matches in July, early August. Then a ridiculous amount of matches to congest next season with, in front of paltry attendances on a THursday night. We don't have, and are unlikely to have by next season, a squad big enough to deal with this without it severely impacting on our league form.

Cant believe anyone would genuinely not want us in Europe, I would give anything to see us play in the Europa league. There would be nothing better than gallivanting on foreign soil with your mates, drinking continental lager, seeing places some people can only dream of all in the name of Southampton Football Club.

I follow England away which is all well and good, but would pack it in in an instance for the chance to see saints play competitive football on the continent.

I worry that the Europa League does eat away at you as the season progresses.

But I've never really worried about the games in July/August. Given every year we tend to play pre-season friendlies against fairly good continental opposition, isn't it just a bonus if these games lead to progressing in Europe. Just treat them like friendlies with a bigger prize if you happen to win them.

I posted this a few weeks ago: http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/showthread.php?42777-UEFA-Respect-Fair-Play-Rankings

The official Premier League fair play table hasn't been updated since 15th January - We were joint 2nd with Fulham then.

Not quite sure where you are looking but http://soccernet.espn.go.com/stats/fairplay/_/league/eng.1/barclays-premier-league?cc=5739 is always bang up to date. If we get there you can be sure NC will make sure we have a big enough squad. In reality it will be a great opportunity for some of the youngsters to step up to the plate. It's the one summer that does not involve our player in Euros or World Cup either so timing is perfect.

But that isn't the Fair Play Table.

The one that is used is on the PL Site

http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/matchday/fair-play.html

It is updated once a month usually around the middle of the month.

The marks are made up of more that just r/y cards, it includes things like Positive Play; Respect to the Oppo; Respect to the Ref etc.

The marking is here :-

As per last check, they were 2nd or 3rd I believe, so we're on track.

As of the middle of Jan, we were 4th: http://www.uefa.com/uefa/socialresponsibility/respect/news/newsid=1911234.html

If you click on the link at the bottom of the text, you can download the pdf.

Norway 8.252

Sweden 8.243

Finland 8.205

England 8.166

Considering that the Scandinavian leagues are probably on a winter break at the moment, they won't be losing any points soon. But we probably won't see the next update until early May, going by what happened last year

Fulham supporting mates went to Baku on their epic tour, surreal experience. In the middle of a stadium full of flares going off they decided to light sparklers. They had a brilliant experience, lifelong memories formed. And nightmares in the form of Diego Forlan

The new Fair Play table is outhttp://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/matchday/fair-play.html

We are 3rd behind Arsenal & Liverpool and now 3 points ahead of Fulham.

Arsenal 844

Liverpool 830

Saints 825

Spurs 824

Fulham 822

...

We are top of the R/Y cards with 217 points (6 ahead of Fulham & 16 ahead of Liverpool) but it the "Behaviour of the Team Officials" section (7 behind Fulham & 5 behind Pool) that lets us down.

I wonder if it the section about "... such as whether they calm down or provoke angry players or fans and how they accept the decisions of the referee. Co-operation with the media will also be taken into account." And HOW do Liverpool score so highly on P/P (positive play) it must be one of their supporters doing the marking.

So at the moment we need Liverpool to claim a European spot, which means they need to finish 5th or 6th if both teams in the FA cup final are in Europe.

We also need to the league overall to be in the top 3 leagues to earn the spots, which it's not http://www.uefa.com/uefa/socialresponsibility/respect/news/newsid=1911234.html

Norway, Sweden and Finland are currently in these spots and England finished 13th last year and we are currently 4th.

Lots of IFs there.
