Kevin Keegan: Voice of Reason

Nice that most of the article covers Saints rather than City. He says some nice things about Saints as you'd expect from Kevin Keegan and makes some pertinent points though I'm not sure about this:

Nigel has got an impressive CV now and he hasn't done it with lorryloads of cash - the achievement of delivering Premier League football on a relatively low budget will make him an attractive proposition to may chairmen.

The article is probably ghostwritten.

And what's this about the donkeys of the New Forest?

Getting a bit boring, just another english manager covering an english managers back....

And when will someone NOT write or say anything about MP not talking english....

It is NOT a big deal these days!!

It is pretty rare for a Prem manager to speak through an interpreter. It's a legitimate area of discussion.

He wouldn't have been crying about Adkins sacking if it had been early December or after about 7 games.

Good way to get his name out there though so he doesn't end up like the forgotten man of Gazza though.

Correct. A man as obscure as Kevin Keegan certainly needs to get his name in the papers by commenting about Nigel Adkins.

F*cking hell. Amazing.

Never trust the words of a man who's initials are only one letter short of a racist group. A bloke called Eddie Davies tried selling me double glazing once, I knew he was trying to rip me off.

I take it you are not a fan of the Kardashians.

.

I bet he would. Sacking him when we did was stupid, but sacking him after seven games would have been equally harsh and premature, and plenty of pundits would have said so.

Oh, and Kev's name was in the papers yesterday. As a British football legend commemorated on a stamp.

Good job he's doing interviews about massive old Saints to keep up his meagre profile. Fck me.

Ageed CB, but if MP is the type of "professional " that we are led to believe, then he'll wait a little bit longer before "going solo" in a press interview, when facing the media who have been raised on " mis-quoting " every poorly-chosen preposition and making a career-dam*ing headline of it.

For my part, I'll be satisfied as long as the players understand what he means.. and st*ff the media.

This is a good point but the Manager is also part of the communication vehicle for the club to the media, the fans and maybe more beyond. Why was I so disappointed about Nigel leaving? It was becuase when he spoke after games and otherwise he was, in part, speaking to me a fan. I was able to relate to him because he represented something I care about.

I've nothing against MP, but we miss that communication and it's something I am disappointed about.

I'll take for granted that he talks to the team in English, but does anybody have confirmation that this actualy does happen?

Kevin who? What has he got to do with Saints?

He's the reason I support them. I bet a lot of late 30's / early 40's Saints fans actually don't come from Soton but started supporting Saints coz of the season signing.

I got this book when I was 8 and got it again for Xmas for nostalgic reasons.

I suspect he talks to Spider in French and Ramierz in Spanish... maybe thats why Spider will IMHO be player of the season.... Dont think it matters to be honest, we have Japanese, Polish and Norwegian, Dutch, (anyone else?) to add to our list - from what we have seen in the 3 games so far, communication does not seem to be a problem and I dont need manager soundbites after a game to tell me all teh usual BS they come out with.... believe there was a whole thread on Adkinisms.... we wont it all ways all the time, when they speak we dont like what they say and take the **** because of cliche, whne they dont its suddenly something we 'miss'....

* agreed

** you are hearing his thoughts (albeit through an interpreter)..... I'm sure it'll take him some time to get upto pace (even after he starts to speak E.) .and to get to the standard of his interpreter.

*** well I'd like to think he can communicate with the players, but in the last game at St.Mary's he was seen talking to Rickie Lambert during the game..if they can understand each other... there should be little problem with others in the side. I've heard an interview with RL .....and IMHO...you'd need a good ear for Scouse to know understand everything he says..

I should think (hope) that all the players know what formation / tactics to play before they start....but the instructions needed during a game /in training are surely fairly basic.

Standard phrases are needed and will be used much of the time.

I'm sure even the average fan could learn basic phrases in the local language - if they were living / working abroad.

ASK Alpine, or Norwegian Saints, or any of our Spanish fans - if they can follow their local football " lingo ".

**personal note : Some years back, I taught a senior member of the Swedish FA. The first thing we did was to analyse all the basic words / terms and phrases and make a list of standard "football jargon", it was less than 100 words, but all very specific. His basic knowledge of English was ..sort of OK ?..but after a couple of meetings, he was upto speed and chatting away almost without hindrance.

I don't think Cortese really did make it out to be like that, just that we could do better under Pochettino?

I think that's the real point..... Nigel Adkins, (who I greatly admire) was thinking like an (albeit new) English Premier League manager, and a relatively in experienced one at that, in a league where there are many European players / and managers.

Whereas ...Cortese (as a European) was thinking in broader international terms. It appears (to me anyway)... that he must have considered that MP was more on " his wavelength."

Of course, we won't make Euro football this season, and maybe not for a season or two yet, but the Prem. is over filled with " non-British managers " and most of them seem to be able to cope. MP fits the bill.

Don't get me wrong, was a great admirer of NA, but his interviews after the games could have been conducted in Chinese and would have had as much meaning as they did. He was expert at saying nothing, would not answer questions, gave no information, after a while, like many, I stopped listening because it was a complete waste of time. He had many great qualities, but his communication in post match or pre match interviews was a complete nonsense (and deliberately so in my opinion). At least now I learn an odd Spanish word or two.

kind of agree...NA was one of the best media trained managers you will see...

My favourite ever player. KK is a great bloke and always loved his enthusiasm. Way better than Hoddle ever was.

KK didn't stay with us long, in fact he's never stayed anywhere long. NC has already been with us longer than KK

Completely agree and and I think it's a total disgrace that the website banner hasn't been updated to replace the non-entity that is KK with the Saints living legend that is the almighty NC.
