Do f**k off. What is the most underachieving tw*t in Englands playing history doing there ?
hypochondriac Posted 8 February, 2013 Posted 8 February, 2013 He is in there because he is probably the most successful black player.
alpine_saint Posted 8 February, 2013 Author Posted 8 February, 2013 Yeah, you may be right, but even then I would argue with the rationale. Emille Heskey did more in an England shirt than him. (My serious nod would probably go to Des Walker). Sick of Barnes dining out on that Brazil goal.
Saint_clark Posted 8 February, 2013 Posted 8 February, 2013 John Barnes just doesn't sit right when said alongside all those other names.
hypochondriac Posted 8 February, 2013 Posted 8 February, 2013 It is ridiculous that just because he is black he is included. That's quite clearly the case because under what other criteria does he qualify?
dinger Posted 8 February, 2013 Posted 8 February, 2013 Just another example of why Britain is a cesspit these days. You'd be better off emigrating.
Thedelldays Posted 8 February, 2013 Posted 8 February, 2013 If Barnes was not there People like saintandy would be outraged in such inequality and oppression
hypochondriac Posted 8 February, 2013 Posted 8 February, 2013 If Barnes was not there People like saintandy would be outraged in such inequality and oppression Good point.
Frank's cousin Posted 8 February, 2013 Posted 8 February, 2013 ... 'outraged' - jees... its a set of fecking stamps and some are getting their Knickers in a twist over the selection of Barnes? The fact you even raise the question that he was 'only included because he was black' is a sad indicment on your thinking - these are not meant to be the best players, but a selection - why I would argue why put Best on a stamp when he ruined 3 livers (other alcoholics are given 1 chance and some none)... Would have been better if it was icons you had influenced the game - then we should have had Cyril Regis ... sadly it appears all his efforts have had little impact on some of you.... wait dont tell me 'its political correctness gone mad'' ... the last bastian of the little englander who lacks teh self awareness to recognise their own prejudice - as for 'Dinger's comment - go f uck yourself you racist **** You lot should be fu c king ashamed

Looks like you are the one getting you knickers in a twist.
Frank's cousin Posted 8 February, 2013 Posted 8 February, 2013 Who said outraged? Read it all again from the first post, look at what you have posted and ask yourself why you made those 'astute' observations.... thats the thing with prejudice, those who exhibit it are usually too ignorant to spot it in themselves.

I posted it because Barnes was f**king sh*te at national level compared to his club form; it didnt even occur to me he was black until hypochondriac pointed out the possible explanation as to why someone so utterly invisible at national level got included in this set of stamps. You'd better not be accusing me of racism, mate.

And yes I am fecked off - too often on these boards, we have this loose prejudice appearing, in typical 'casual' fashion... the 'I'm not racist but he was only chosen cos he was black' so sometimes you have to say something. So I am not calling YOU a racist. NOt sure what you were going to do about it had I been though - thats tought talk...mate!
LGTL Posted 8 February, 2013 Posted 8 February, 2013 My favourite part of the article was this... "It takes two years to turn an initial idea into a real stamp on sale in the post office. A team of four at the Royal Mail spent four months thoroughly researching who should make the cut. They created a long long list with more than 80 names on it before consulting extensively with experts, using the National Football Museum in Manchester as a key resource, to reduce them to the 11." Four months??? I could have created that list in 10 minutes. Where do I sign up for this job?
RonManager Posted 8 February, 2013 Posted 8 February, 2013 Why are there jocks and paddys in this? Where is the artistic talent? They're awful. Either make them realistic or impressionistic. These do neither.
hypochondriac Posted 9 February, 2013 Posted 9 February, 2013 Read it all again from the first post' date=' look at what you have posted and ask yourself why you made those 'astute' observations.... thats the thing with prejudice, those who exhibit it are usually too ignorant to spot it in themselves.[/quote'] Loledy. I'm not prejudice I just fail to see how John Barnes deserves to be there. He clearly isn't in the same class as the others football wise and his main distinguishing factor is that his skin is a different colour.

I said that I fail to see under what other criteria he was chosen other than the the fact that he was quite successful and black. To my mind it certainly wasn't a footballing criteria as he clearly wasn't as talented as the others nor did he gain as much success.
pap Posted 9 February, 2013 Posted 9 February, 2013 Yeah, you may be right, but even then I would argue with the rationale. Emille Heskey did more in an England shirt than him. (My serious nod would probably go to Des Walker). Sick of Barnes dining out on that Brazil goal. Emile Heskey didn't have to put up with neanderthals on terraces for most of his life. Even if he did, I'd probably still favour Barnes. "Hello, here is a stamp collection of our most celebrated footballers, including Emile Heskey"
Dr Who? Posted 9 February, 2013 Posted 9 February, 2013 John Barnes was the first English black player to be a regular England player in the face of abuse, that I could not even imagine. I like the chap, but not him being a football program front man.....
Badger Posted 9 February, 2013 Posted 9 February, 2013 It is ridiculous that just because he is black he is included. That's quite clearly the case because under what other criteria does he qualify? I always thought his most significant contribution to the England squad was his rap in 'World in motion' Why are there jocks and paddys in this? British ? Not that either like to think of themselves as such.
Badger Posted 9 February, 2013 Posted 9 February, 2013 Come on , thats well worth a place on any set of stamps surely ?
Thedelldays Posted 9 February, 2013 Posted 9 February, 2013 I always thought his most significant contribution to the England squad was his rap in 'World in motion' British ? Badger Posted 9 February, 2013 Posted 9 February, 2013 isnt this for the 150 year thingy for the FA....not the SFA and such...? Obviously that minor detail was lost on the Post Office then.
pap Posted 10 February, 2013 Posted 10 February, 2013 isnt this for the 150 year thingy for the FA....not the SFA and such...? Which Football Association did these players play most of their club football for? George Best didn't spend his time playing for Linfield or Portadown. Denis Law played in England for almost his entire career, and never played for a Scottish club.
alpine_saint Posted 10 February, 2013 Author Posted 10 February, 2013 Come on , thats well worth a place on any set of stamps surely ? I remember there were a lot of rumours that Keith Allen rapped that part with a psuedo-Carribbean accent.

Two much smaller nations don't constantly fawn over their culturally powerful neighbour all the time, so they shouldn't be represented on the stamps? I like the fact that as a whole, the United Kingdom has enough countries in it so that it can be inwardly critical.

You see the cesspit thing is something that Alpine sometimes says. It was, I'll admit, a slightly cheap dig and it's obviously gone over your head. But I'll accept your apology for calling me a racist.

But given the context of the context of the thread and the recent spate of thinly disgusied or at times blatent prejudice expressed, I hope you can see how easy it was to misinterpret. I am sorry for any offence caused.
