Wiper arm moves about 4 inches whilst in the off position. This leads to the wiper arm hitting the pillar sometimes. Obviously not good.

Tried tightening the nut but hasn't helped at all. Any ideas?

Undo the nut and remove the arm. Check to see if the spindle that the arm pivots on is damaged or worn. If not, then replace the wiper arm with a new one and tighten the nut with the arm in the correct position. If the spindle is too worn or damaged (unlikely) then the wiper linkage assembly under the scuttle will need to be replaced as well as the arm.

Of course all that would be wrong in the worst case would be the little clamping device in the end of the arm and the spindle on the linkage but you can't get those parts separately, unless that is, if your wipers are driven by a cable drive and then you can buy the separate gearbox's with the spindle attached, but you would still need the arm. Perhaps you could buy a good complete second hand assembly from Silverlake Garage.(good used spares)

thanks a lot for the advice, took it to my mechanic and had it fixed today. I believe it was the linkage, ended up costing me about £130 in the end
