Gemmel Posted 4 February, 2013 Posted 4 February, 2013 Mick Channon just retweeted a picture that Alan Ball's daughter had posted she has loads more fantastic pictures of Bally , but this one is my favorite. What a team!!!
Toadhall Saint Posted 4 February, 2013 Posted 4 February, 2013 It certainly was. Most if not all were full internationals (oh and a world cup winner t'boot).
pangy Posted 4 February, 2013 Posted 4 February, 2013 Is LM a giant or did we have a team of midgets?
Saint Without a Halo Posted 4 February, 2013 Posted 4 February, 2013 Watching that team gave me some of my best ever Saints memories! (was at Uni and never missed a match, Chose Southampton Uni over a number of others to be near Saints!)
Miltonroader07 Posted 4 February, 2013 Posted 4 February, 2013 Mick Channon just retweeted a picture that Alan Ball's daughter had posted she has loads more fantastic pictures of Bally , but this one is my favorite. What a team!!! What a great picture, includes a Hugely Under Rated player... Steve Williams
Spudders Posted 4 February, 2013 Posted 4 February, 2013 This thread has nothing to do with identification of the A-Team. Misleading title
Ex Ringwood Saint Posted 4 February, 2013 Posted 4 February, 2013 Great Pic...Katalinic was a star! And his mate Golac my fav saints player of all time..some of my best saints memories were watching this lot with my dad and brother in the Milton end....
Katalinic Posted 4 February, 2013 Posted 4 February, 2013 The Kat's porno moustache was legendary! Thanks
Fowllyd Posted 4 February, 2013 Posted 4 February, 2013 I like the way that everybody's looking straight at the camera apart from Mick Channon, who seems to be listening to a racing tip from someone out of shot. Great photo, great days.
Olallana Posted 4 February, 2013 Posted 4 February, 2013 of course that team was good.... Gandalf as manager ffs!
Dr Who? Posted 4 February, 2013 Posted 4 February, 2013 I like the way that everybody's looking straight at the camera apart from Mick Channon, who seems to be listening to a racing tip from someone out of shot. Great photo, great days. Channon is always in a world of his own!
bender Posted 4 February, 2013 Posted 4 February, 2013 This was just when I started supporting Saints. Had that full kit and with that sponsor
Katalinic Posted 4 February, 2013 Posted 4 February, 2013 This was just when I started supporting Saints. Had that full kit and with that sponsor Me too, still got the shirt and a tracksuit top - that kit has never been bettered since although nostalgia may be blurring my opinion.
ToreSF Posted 4 February, 2013 Posted 4 February, 2013 Makes me regret I wasn't born 20 years earlier...
Restark19 Posted 4 February, 2013 Posted 4 February, 2013 Me too, still got the shirt and a tracksuit top - that kit has never been bettered since although nostalgia may be blurring my opinion. Would love if we had something similar next season
Golac's Cunning Stunts Posted 4 February, 2013 Posted 4 February, 2013 Makes me regret I wasn't born 20 years earlier... I'd trade you those 20 years if I could! But as I can't, I'll console myself with having seen that team and those players week in week out. And, in their respective positions, I would take any one of them over the current bunch (maybe might make an exception for Rickie)
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 4 February, 2013 Posted 4 February, 2013 So this is why all our academy players are so small, we're cloning this team.
Golac's Cunning Stunts Posted 4 February, 2013 Posted 4 February, 2013 So this is why all our academy players are so small' date=' we're cloning this team.[/quote'] I did wonder about this. I know Lawrie is ex Guards, but he looks like a giant compared to the rest of them
BadgerBadger Posted 4 February, 2013 Posted 4 February, 2013 Great pic - I received my only football trophys from Malcolm Waldron and Reuben Agboola at Botley FC when I was around 10 yrs old

And, in their respective positions, I would take any one of them over the current bunch (maybe might make an exception for Rickie)[/quote'] I started supporting Southampton in 1997 and had no idea about the success and team we had in the 80s. Was amazed when i read up on some of the players we had back then, especially Keegan of course. While it may not be impossible that we manage to top our best results from that era in my life time, we will never sign todays Keegan again.
StAndy1970 Posted 4 February, 2013 Posted 4 February, 2013 What a team that was. Yes we had Keagan, but the rest were all stars as well. My first football hero, Peter Wells. Never forget him breaking a finger. No gloves in those days. Ivan Golac, legend. Chris Nichol, saints legend. My other hero Micky Channon. Will we ever have so many stars in the future. I really hope so! COYR!!!!!

moonraker Posted 4 February, 2013 Posted 4 February, 2013 They were the best team I have seen in a Saints kit, everyone of them would get in todays team, I believe at least eight of the team were Saints products, Channon, Waldron, Holmes, Williams, Moran, Baker, Agboola, Hebberd
StAndy1970 Posted 4 February, 2013 Posted 4 February, 2013 Certainly sure Peter Wells never wore gloves.
svetigpung Posted 5 February, 2013 Posted 5 February, 2013 Radio Rental COLOUR....wow no wonder Lawie Mac got what he wanted. Looks like a dad with his nippers. So cool.
mikee Posted 5 February, 2013 Posted 5 February, 2013 Thanks for the picture. My favourite ever team and kit. What a player Steve Williams was.....until he moved to Arsenal!
oldsarum Posted 5 February, 2013 Posted 5 February, 2013 Who's that between Holmes and Channon? Malcolm Waldron
Victor Posted 5 February, 2013 Posted 5 February, 2013 Who's that between Holmes and Channon? Malcolm Waldron. And to the poster who said Steve Williams was 'hugely under-rated' I would say he certainly was NOT. Most who saw him rated him extremely highly - and not just Saints' fans. And his absence from one game cost us a FA cup final appearance.
sussexsaint Posted 5 February, 2013 Posted 5 February, 2013 first sains team I ever watched as a kid and in my favourite strip, happy memories flooding back
Webby Posted 5 February, 2013 Posted 5 February, 2013 Malcolm Waldron Right, I've got him and hebberd mixed up I think.
sussexsaint Posted 5 February, 2013 Posted 5 February, 2013 Malcolm Waldron. And to the poster who said Steve Williams was 'hugely under-rated' I would say he certainly was NOT. Most who saw him rated him extremely highly - and not just Saints' fans. And his absence from one game cost us a FA cup final appearance. was about to post the same, he was an immense player
eelpie Posted 5 February, 2013 Posted 5 February, 2013 It certainly was. Most if not all were full internationals (oh and a world cup winner t'boot). ... and a European Footballer of The Year
wobbly saint Posted 5 February, 2013 Posted 5 February, 2013 So......? Ivan Katalinic Mick Channon Malcolm Waldron Nick Holmes Rueban Agboola Graham Baker David Armstrong Kevin Keegan Lawrie McMenemy Alan Ball Steve Moran Steve Williams Trevor Hebberd Dave Watson Ivan Golac Chris Nicholl Peter Wells
Frank's cousin Posted 5 February, 2013 Posted 5 February, 2013 Wasn't Keegan signed on wages of £175k a YEAR! That would be like signing Messi on 10k a week in todays terms... Unbelieveable.
Baldbarbarian Posted 5 February, 2013 Posted 5 February, 2013 that team was 2 years before I was born, a shame I never got to see them play live & that is easily my favourite Saints kit
Ex Ringwood Saint Posted 5 February, 2013 Posted 5 February, 2013 Last saw Malcolm Waldron when he visited my dad to talk about his pension! Think he was working for Abbey Life as was in Bournemouth back in the 90's..... I had that kit too - full socks shorts and top - my bro had the blue kit, and although it was Blue....it was a cool second kit.....
