Gambol2K9 Posted 4 February, 2013 Share Posted 4 February, 2013 http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/2013/02/01/chelsea-fc-fans-jailed-for-taking-smoke-bombs-to-swansea-city-match-91466-32729027/ Two Chelsea soccer fans have been jailed for taking smoke "grenades" into the Liberty Stadium during a game against Swansea City. The pair were caught each carrying "Enola Gaye" smoke bombs - used in war games and paintballing - into the Capital One Cup semi-final. The fans planned to let off the blue smoke bombs when Chelsea scored. But Chelsea failed to score - and were knocked out in the second leg at the Liberty Stadium clash. Jamie Greenwood, 26, and his cousin, Harry Greenwood, 19, both of London, were jailed for 28 days. They admitted having the article during a designated sporting event, an offence under the Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol etc) Act 1985. The pair, described as "avid" Chelsea fans Greenwoods were both also given football banning orders stopping them from attending games for six years. Chelsea have already revoked their season tickets. A 17-year-old youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was given a six-month referral order and also banned from matches until 2017. Phil Huxtable, representing all three, said they were remorseful and "shaken up" by their arrest. He said: "When they purchased the grenades it wasn't their intention to cause trouble as such. "It was their intention, should Chelsea have scored, that they would let them off. Fortunately that didn't happen." Deputy District Judge Neil Thomas told him: "It's the potential for disaster that makes this case so very serious and only a custodial sentence can be justified." Turkish Posted 4 February, 2013 Share Posted 4 February, 2013 Apart from anything else what is the point of sending someone to prison for 28 days? It's ridiculous. Their football ban means they wont be allowed near a ground for 6 years. What was "the potential for disaster" the judge was on about? Yet again stupid and massively over the top sentances. Gambol2K9 Posted 4 February, 2013 Author Share Posted 4 February, 2013 I wonder how much taxpayers money has been wasted pursuing this case? Not only that, with a stint in prison on their CV, good luck to the lads on finding a job in this climate. I despair of this country sometimes. aintforever Posted 4 February, 2013 Share Posted 4 February, 2013 That is just crazy, how can there be a potential for disaster in letting off a bit of smoke? Some judges are just so out of touch with today's world it is scary.
Huffton Posted 4 February, 2013 Share Posted 4 February, 2013 Jesus H Christ, what does it cost to keep someone in prison for a month? Oh I forgot, it doesn't matter as the country has shed loads of money sitting around needing to be burned:rolleyes: No matter the rights and wrongs they broke the law and deserve to be punished, but surely a small fine and a ban for the rest of the season is more than enough?
