Saint Garrett Posted 4 February, 2013 Share Posted 4 February, 2013 http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/21319807 Match-fixing: Champions League tie played in England 'was fixed' A Champions League tie played in England is one of 380 matches across Europe investigators say was fixed. European police did not reveal the identity of the match they believe was corrupt in England. But Europol did say that they had uncovered an organised crime syndicate based in Asia that was co-ordinating the operation. Some 425 match officials, club officials, players and criminals are suspected of being involved. Europol, which has been investigating for 18 months, said suspected matches included World Cup and European Championship qualifiers, two Champions League ties and "several top football matches in European leagues". Criminals wagered 16m euros on rigged matches and made eight million Euros in profits, Europol say. Payments of two million Euros are thought to have been paid to those involved. The biggest payment to an individual was 140,000 Euros, according to investigators. Europol believes a crime syndicate based in Asia was liaising with criminal networks throughout Europe. It believes match-fixing has taken place in 15 countries and 50 people have so far been arrested. Officials said they feared this was the "tip of the iceberg". Rob Wainwright, director of Europol, said: " This is the work of a suspected organised crime syndicate based in Asia and operated with criminal networks around Europe. "It is clear to us this is the biggest-ever investigation into suspected match-fixing in Europe. It has yielded major results which we think have uncovered a big problem for the integrity of football in Europe. "We have uncovered an extensive criminal network." Europol gave the details on Monday at a news conference in The Hague, Netherlands.
Saint_clark Posted 4 February, 2013 Share Posted 4 February, 2013 The amounts of money quoted are insignificant to teams playing in the Champions League, why do it?
angelman Posted 4 February, 2013 Share Posted 4 February, 2013 There are 6 clubs it could have been if in the past 3 or 4 years....Chelsea, ManU, ManC, Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs. If found guilty, would they face relegation as has what has happened in Italy?

Window Cleaner Posted 4 February, 2013 Share Posted 4 February, 2013 The amounts of money quoted are insignificant to teams playing in the Champions League, why do it? because it's not teams that fix matches per se, it's players and refs. Greedy men will do anything for a couple of extra bob whether they need it or not.
saintbletch Posted 4 February, 2013 Share Posted 4 February, 2013 (edited) There are 6 clubs it could have been if in the past 3 or 4 years....Chelsea, ManU, ManC, Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs. If found guilty, would they face relegation as has what has happened in Italy? Could it be that one of those teams was involved, but they won the tie and didn't realise that the other team had thrown the match? Scummer Posted 4 February, 2013 Share Posted 4 February, 2013 United have had a few odd results in recent years, losing at home to supposedly inferior teams.

Saint_clark Posted 4 February, 2013 Share Posted 4 February, 2013 That does explain some refereeing displays.
Window Cleaner Posted 4 February, 2013 Share Posted 4 February, 2013 Laugh my tits off if 'arry was taking bungs...and was the reason for getting fired from Spurs... it won't be anything to do with a manager and probably not even players. It will more than likely be an iffy East European or Turkish reffing trio giving a dodgy penalty to influence the result or a blatantly offside goal being allowed. I remember the ref in the Chelsea -Barca game being a right useless bastard. Drogba got into real hot water over him.
