Remaining Fixtures for bottom teams...

The thing is Wigan don't look a bad side at the moment and with their experience it wouldn't be a surprise if they pull clear. With us and Villa picking up the odd result you can see one of the clubs above getting sucked in.

It's very open this year with only 4 points between 4th bottom Villa and stoke in 11th. It all depends on how Wigan do.

Sunderland just look like they might implode. They look like their confidence is totally shot.

We're still in the scrap though. Wigan are better than their position - I think they'll be safe, I think Villa will be OK. QPR are a cert to go down, they have Harry and he doesnt do relegation fights. Reading are going down. We're still not out of the drop zone yet.

Interesting - Sunderland seem to be the most popular third team to go, which isn't how the bookies see it.

Yeah, it's that "flavour of the month" thing though isn't it ? Villa have won 2 matches recently but at the moment people see Sunderland sliding and Villa rising up, but Villa have only beaten the bottom 2 and West Ham since December, and are still terrible.

Having said that, I just did the predictor and had Sunderland/Villa/Wigan all very close - Villa v Sunderland and the last day Wigan v Villa will probably be key. I also had Reading 7 points behind everyone else.

Saints, winning their home games and losing aways with the exceptions of draws at Sunderland and Reading came in a (close) 12th, 2 points ahead of 15th and 2 points behind 10th.

People are basing it on momentum, teams are running out of games to run their form around really to make a difference, so Sunderland's terrible run + tough fixtures + some omentum from Wigan and Villa is what is causing it. Fletchers injury will add to the doom and gloom I imagine.

At the moment they are like us 4 clear, but give a few weeks and they might not be, thing is I bet they will pick up an unexpected result which will then make them safe.

All set up for them to fluke a win over Utd, they weren't exactly on the ball against Reading and only won there because of a Rooney deflected goal, they didn't get out of second gear and they probably know second gear will win them enough games to win the title .

I see Fergie has said he's going to play 2 completely different teams this week....Surely they'll get fined just like Wolves did !?

Why should they? If they are in their 25 man squad that they handed in in August then what's the problem?

Different competitions this time...

Wolves did it with 2 prem games and that was deemed unacceptable (for no logical reason)

Consistency ?!

What's the point of having a 25 man squad if you get fined for only playing the ones other people think you should? Fergie, to his credit, has shown many times he wont be dictated to about who to pick. He'll pick and send out teams to win both matches.

Not saying I agree with it. What I am saying, however, is that if Wolves got fined for it, then why shouldn't Man Utd. Its because they're a huge club and Fergie does what he wants.

No idea. Wolves shouldn't have been and neither should Man United. If the players are in their 25 man squad then why is it a problem? Why should anyone else dictate who a club manager can pick?

Sunderland's momentum was as good as anyone's when they beat us and Man City in December, why is not that being taken into consideration ? ;)

Fwiw, my predictor thing oversimplified, I only had us to win 2 homes and draw 2 away, and we were still comfortable before the last match (which was the second win).

Dunno if the Adkins thing will change much, other than Reading obviously beating us now...

Big weekend in the Prem. I'll be surprised if we get much out of Chelsea, they're pretty ruthless when they're on it, but then we've been surprised a few times recently.

Sat 30th:

Sunderland vs Man Utd (12:45)

Arsenal vs Reading

Man City vs Newcastle

Southampton vs Chelsea

Swansea vs Tottenham

West Ham vs West Brom

Wigan vs Norwich

Everton vs Stoke (17:30)

Sun 31st:

Villa vs Liverpool (13:30)

Mon 1st:

Fulham vs QPR (20:00)

We can realistically expect defeats for Sunderland, Reading, ourselves, probably Newcastle, hopefully Villa and QPR. Wigan vs Norwich is tough to call. I'd bet on a draw if I had to call it but a Norwich win would be useful.

We could really do with Liverpool pulling their finger out on Sunday, don't want Villa getting any momentum. And while they're in bad shape anyway, anything but a win for QPR will all but finish them.

I can see Wigan and QPR winning to be honest, and then Sunderland, Reading, Newcastle and us all loosing.

Toughest one to call is Villa v Liverpool, we need to the real Liverpool to turn up, hopefully they will be smarting after the result against us.

Reckon the table will be like this after the weekend:

12. Stoke 34

13. Norwich 34

14. Newcastle 33

15. Saints 31

16. Sunderland 31

17. Wigan 30

18. Villa 30

19. QPR 26

20. Reading 23

April 6: Reading (A)

April 13: West Ham (H)

April 20: Swansea (A)

April 27: West Brom (H)

May 4: Tottenham (A)

May 12: Sunderland (A)

May 19: Stoke (H)

so, 7 games left to play. based on current form I can see us getting 3 points each from reading, west ham and Sunderland games. maybe even a win at Swansea as they seem to have started their holidays early after their cup win. first time this season when I really feel very confident of our chances of staying up. I think we can start worrying less about the teams below us and just focus on securing 2-3 more wins and that should be enough!

I've been trying to find that stats/probability site that shows the league table and the % likelihood of finishing in different positions - can anyone help?

http://www.sportsclubstats.com/England/Southampton.html

This is a good one based on the monte Carlo Technique used to ascertain and allocate probability to different complex outcomes!

the last line shows the likely outcomes after Chelsea with our most likely finishing place now being between 12/13 and the likelehood of relegation being less than 2% now!
