I'm starting to feel confident enough to look at catching the teams above us rather than keep clear of those below us.

This! Come on, lets have a thread like this for teams aiming for around 10th. Coz thats the plan from here on in, its very clear now

Reading worry me....just look at their home games...

looking at that, it is hard to see QPR getting enough points...

every time we fuk up a win, it puts added pressure on games like the man city game......

Equally, everybody going there will also see it as a chance of 3pts.

Tottenham (A) - 0 points

Stoke (A) - 0 points

Man Utd (H) - 0 points

Chelsea (A) - 0 points

West Brom (H) - 3 points

Liverpool (A) - 0 points

Southampton (A) - 0 points

Wigan (H) - 3 points

Man City (A) - 0 points

Newcastle (H) - 1 point

Everton (A) - 0 points

Reading (H) - 3 points

10 points to leave them on 40 come the end of the season, which should almost certainly keep them up. If they do happen to lose their next four games, which I think they will, confidence will be very low going into the game against WBA so who knows where that might leave them.

Would be hilarious if WHU went down. The amount of abuse I get from WHU fans. Mentioned how I think Morgan and Cork are one of the best CM partnerships at the moment....got a comment that Diame and Noble are a lot better......Ok then.

Diame and Noble ARE better......at watching the ball fly over their heads for 90 minutes a week....

Would be very interesting to see stats on them how many passes they have each game compared to Cork/Spider...

A win for us up at Newcastle would drag them right back into it again. And, with Villa pulling West Ham well and truly into it today, there are literally 8 or 9 teams with a very realistic chance of going down. I don't remember it being this tight at the bottom.

Posted

I'd honnestly take our fixtures out of all of those. A trip to Spuds is about as tough as it gets, in theory. Every other game I'd have labled as winnable. Swansea, Liverpool and Chelsea are about the toughest of the rest.

I don't think Reading's fixtures are all that good. Yes they have some home games against other relegation candidates but those games will be edge and could go either way. Fail to win a couple of those and they will be in big trouble. Then they have away games at Arsenal, Man Utd and Everton. Trips to Fulham, West Ham and Norwich wont be easy either. I'd have them down as draws at best, unless they pull off some astonishing results.

From those fixtures I'd guess at

February 23: Wigan (H) WIN

March 2: Everton (A) LOSE

March 9: Aston Villa (H) WIN

March 16: Manchester United (A) LOSE

March 30: Arsenal (A) LOSE

April 6: Southampton (H) DRAW

April 13: Liverpool (H) DRAW

April 20: Norwich (A) DRAW

April 27: QPR (H) WIN

May 4: Fulham (A) DRAW

May 12: Man City (H) LOSE

May 19: West Ham (A) DRAW

Thats 37 points being VERY generous and assuming they will get 10 points from 12 in their relegation crunch games. That's only 10 points above what we've got now. If we win our home games against West Brom, Wham, Stoke and QPR I'm 90% sure we will finish above them.

Posted
As much as there are other teams being dragged in, I still think it will be 3 from the bottom 4.

I'm inclined to agree with you, but the face-to-face games between the bottom teams are going to decide a lot. In that context, I think Reading have 4H and 1A, Villa have 3H and 3A, QPR have 3H and 4A, Wigan have 2H and 2A, Newcastle have 4H and 2A, and we have 1H and 3A.

There's a ton of potential volatility in there.

I think one thing we have going for us is that under MP we play a similar game home or away. Some of the other teams really struggle away compared to us at the moment.

Reading vs Wigan will be an interesting game on the 23rd - Reading like to play on the counter and Wigan like to keep the ball. Will be interesting to see who comes out on top in that game, although hopefully it'll be a draw!

On form over last 10 games carried into next 10, the table wouyld look like this with 2 games to go (bracket figure is points earnt in last 10 games)

11 Sunderland 42 (13)

12 Saints 39 (12)

13 Fulham 38 (9)

14 West Ham 38 (8)

15 Newcastle 37 (10)

16 Reading 37 (14)

17 Norwich 36 (7)

18 Aston Villa 33 (9)

19 Wigan 27 (6)

20 QPR 27 (10)

I'd take that now if offered

Reading are a conundrum. Clearly not very good with average players but they got promoted on the back of an incredible run of form and are threatening to stay up on the back of similarly good form. I hope they don't ...

Just flicking through a WHU forum and found this golden post...

Assuming we stay up, I hope we keep him. Teams like Swansea only have one way to play. There is no plan B.

As we improve the quality in our team, we will play more attractive football, but also have the option to hit it long into a target man. I don't see the point of that tippy tappy football. Passing for the sake of it is pointless unless you have Xavi, Iniesta etc... You need to pass with purpose like the Germans do.

cant see beyond a Reading win on that one i'm afraid. I'd rather they go down than Wigan.

be interesting to see how we get on against teams who just hoof the ball..

west ham and a lesser extent...newcastle

We did alright against Stoke

Looks like anyone in the bottom half is going to get involved in a relegation fight. If you are within 6pts of relegation I think you are very involved. A few teams may pull away in March but I was convinced it was 3 from 5 (Us, Villa, Wigan, Reading, and QPR) at the start of January and now I think several more teams are involved (Norwich, Fulham, Sunderland, West Ham). I can guarantee all their fans are looking over their shoulders and at their fixtures.

anyone on 29 or 30 points is fairly safe. They will only need another 8 or 9 points to be safe. Can you really see WIgan, QPR, Reading & Villa getting 16-17 points (QPR need 21) from their last 12 games, especially as they all play each other as well.

You are probably right, but Reading looked dead and buried and picked up 10pts from 5 games so its not impossible to go on an unexpected run. And of the teams on 29 or 30pts, they aren't in the best of form, so it wouldn't surprise me to see one of them dragged right into it.

Of course it's possible but for all their great run of late Reading are still in the drop zone tonight. I just cant see them getting 7 points more than Fulham, Norwich and Sunderland over the remaining 12 games, for Wigan they need 9 points more from the same 12 games. We've given ourselves a great chance of staying up with yesterdays win andd 3 points from the Newcastle or QPR games would see the home straight in sight. The bottom 4 all play each other in the run in so will also be taking points of each other. Realistically it's going to change an incredible swing in form for the teams just above us to be sucked in and we could get ourselves within touching distance of safety with 4-6 points from our next 3 games which given our current form in most definitely achievable.

Can West Ham survive ....OK it's a joke, right ? well.. .maybe not .

YES - They are 3 points ahead of us, but Villa and Reading aren't laying down dead yet and WHam's remaining games are looking quite formidable.

Their fixtures are a split between key games against several relegation sides.... and some more against some of the top six ....nearly all AWAY.

Big Sam might be in a very unpleasant situation ....come April.

Bottom of the league teams? Not so sure about this. I am expecting us to kick on to mid table at least at the moment! This thread is going to be so irrelevant in 2-3 weeks :)

Also - Stoke, WBA and West Ham have all been in terrible form over the past 6 games. We'll overtake the mid-table teams at this rate!

But for the record, this is what I think we can achieve if we continue in the form we are in.

SOUTHAMPTON Fixtures - 27 points

February 23 Newcastle (A) Saints WIN 2-1

March 2: QPR (H) Saints WIN 4-0

March 9: Norwich (A) Saints WIN 2-1

March 16: Liverpool (H) DRAW - 2-2

March 30 Chelsea (H) LOSS (I sense Chelsea revenge may be on the cards!) 1-2

April 6: Reading (A) Saints WIN - 2-1.All you have to do with Reading is not switch of in the last 10 minutes.

April 13: West Ham (H) Saints WIN - 3-1.

April 20: Swansea (A) LOSS - Swans are motoring this season

April 27: West Brom (H) Saints WIN 3-1. WBA form is awful.

May 4: Tottenham (A) Saints LOSS 2-1. Spuds are firing on all cylinders.

May 12: Sunderland (A) Saints LOSS 2-1. Sunderland will be struggling and its a long trip.

May 19: Stoke (H) Saints WIN 3-1. Stoke are in poor form.

22 extra points putting us on 59, and a top half finish.

Its possible, its really possible.

Respect to you... That is optimism

I suspect that soon we will end up with a bottom group of 4 or 5 and a large group of another 5 or 6 above them with a gap of 4 or 5 points between the two. At the moment we are at the cusp between these but I think we have enough going for us after yesterday to be part of the upper group.

Posted

Looking at the fixtures it looks bad for QPR and Villa especially. But if QPR pick up a win against us and we fail to get anything at Newcastle, our fixtures in turn don't look too favorable either.

So happy how we've been playing but cannot lose the feeling something will go wrong!

I think it's unlikely we are going to hit top 6 form, which I'm pretty sure that is.

Newcastle away won't be that easy, they are good at home, have improved in form with their new signings. They were only beat by Bale on Saturday, otherwise they were pretty close.

If we play like we did against Man City we can pick up results against anyone though.

I would like to think from our home games against QPR, West Ham, West Brom, and Stoke we can get 10 from 12 points.

We have a decent chance of picking up points from Reading, Norwich, Sunderland away and probably Liverpool at home.

Reckon Spurs away, Chelsea home, Newcastle away and Swansea away will be zero points.

We needa bout 37 or 38 to stay up, I reckon we will get to 41.

Tottenham (A) - 0 points

Stoke (A) - 0 points

Man Utd (H) - 0 points

Chelsea (A) - 0 points

West Brom (H) - 3 points

Liverpool (A) - 0 points

Southampton (A) - 0 points

lol, is that West Hams remaining fixtures?

Stoke away, Man City away, Chelsea away, Liverpool away. Everton away, Spurs away and Utd at home. No wonder they are where they are, they have 4 of the top 6 to visit away from home!

They could have 1 win in 10 by the time West Brom visit.
