so the day after some Chelsea fans get a month in jail and a 10 yr banning order just for taking smoke bombs, not even letting them off, some of our fans take a smoke bomb.

We really have some spackers for supporters.

So you're happy to consider yourself scum then as I don't and don't wish to be. Screaming scum army is hardly supporting the team is it? I thought the words were Red army.

How mis educated I am. All I could see is that they are attention seeking yobbos who think they "all that", when they together but individually wouldn't say boo to a goose.

I am up for a good bit of banter with the away fans and I will always make sure I support the team but to basically admit I am scum... No chance. I why would I? I can only assume these people have r very low self asteem. I

Quite sad really.

i think we are known as scummers by most football fans the length of this country.

as a football chant nothing wrong with it.

supporting the team away is getting more sanitised by the year,if you dont enjoy the away crack, which these lads were having, dont go,stay at home and be an armchair fan.

im 53,got pushed over during the celebration but was helped back up by these so called mongs.

dont judge people,by a celebratory video, which ive removed cos of some of the crap posted on here

as for the smoke bombs,it does no harm to no one,no one died,no one got hurt.its part of football culture all over europe and creates an atmosphere, which is enjoyable to watch and be part of.

I got no issue with the smoke bomb other than it stank, but I don't want to be associated a scum.

Why are they attention seeking yobbos? Weird.

I like the fact that we've adopted that nickname. If you're too precious and have too high an opinion of yourselves to are unable to refer to yourself in self depreciating humour and anyone that does is an attentions seeking yobbo then I think we'll know who has the low self esteem issues round here don't we.

We support someone else then as by being a saints fan lots of other supporters the length and breadth of the country know us to be scummers. If you don't like it then change club.

We aren't known as Scummers by most football fans. Do people forget that up until about 10 years ago, we called Pompey fans Scummers as much as they called us it? I even saw on Facebook a few days ago one of my best mates referring to the totally fictional dockers strike to justify why we are called the "Scum Army". I still cringe at the thought of our fans latching on to a fictional story to justify a derogatory nickname we used to call Pompey fans until recent memory but for some reason seem so keen to adopt.

well, as I have said many times...I work with pretty much fans of every club in britain.....scummer is most definitely a word associated with us..

if someone asked what was the scummers score...they would all think "saints"...not wigan, not cardiff, not pompey, not crewe, not liverpool, not brentford...but saints....

Agree with this. I've lived and worked in various spots accross the midlands and work with people from all over. Never once have I heard anyone mention Saints=Scummers.

Quite the opposite really - my two brothers and all my non-forum Saints supporting friends call Pompey scum and never use the Skate thing. My bros both think the Skate name is lame as fu ck and not actually "real". They're right. It's just some toss from the Ugly Inside fanzine which has stuck on webforums and now journos use it. Pompey=Scum.

So, Skates is bulls hit, like no one really calls Sunderland "the black cats" except reporters. Anyway, scummers is complete generic term. Ask Watford/Luton fans.

The QPR fans could clearly be heard chanting "we beat the scum 1-0" on sky on Saturday...a clear reference to beating a local rival.

Anyone who thinks scum is only used for Saints fans probably also thinks that them seeing a magpie will also influence the result of the game that day.

of course it is used for local rivals...just that from my experience the term "scummer(s)" is connected with us...

many other fans may not call us scummers but we would be who they are generally on about if they did use that term...

ok, think you know what they mean....

not that it matters in anyway...

I do get it but I don't think fans of other teams will. Singing it at a pompey game I could understand (Not that that is likely to happen again) but personally think it's a bit lame...but then again any noise is better than none!

See all the Key board warriors are out tonight. Fair play to these YOBS for making the 450 miles trip from Southampton to support their local team. This red smoke did make me cough. These smoke bombs went off through the Saints fan so it must off been more than one doing it.

They won't have a freaking clue what we would be singing about. And it doesn't really make sense considering Pompey's current plight and our current superiority, all a bit weird really, but hey, who cares. It's noise. I'm hopefully going to the Norwich game, and if they start singing it, I'll probably join in despite it being sh ite.

sickening they got sent down for just carrying some in.

If they had been caught letting them off, then maybe the sentence would be justified (although still harsh I feel) but just having them on them is a joke.

Personally not a fan of the whole scum army thing. However if some want to adopt/sing it then that's up to them.

Same reason spurs sing "Yid" Army. Yids started off as a derogatory term aimed at them by Arsenal supporters.

The main difference is the yid thing is intrinsically linked to Spurs, and not just Arsenal fans but all London clubs (and other clubs) give them yid related stick. Saints and scummers is not quite the same. Fans of other clubs might sing "you're just a small town in portsmouth" but I can't recall any of them ever calling us "Scummers", except Pompey and wannabe Pompey-fans, hello Bournemouth.

But as you say, let people sing it if they want to.

As far as I know you are in the Navy. Portsmouth is a naval port so it is quite likely that a large proportion of the people you know are Portsmouth "sympathizers" who adopt the 'Scummer' nickname in referring to Southampton.

I have lived and worked in London for over 10 years alongside football nuts and a large amount of my family and friends are avid Newcastle fans. Not once do they refer to Southampton as Scummers.

Guess what, I have never been based in Portsmouth. I never will be

There you go

Can only say from my experience. Fans from most clubs that I know (who also are not nor never based in Portsmouth) would think of saints of someone referred to someone else as a scummer

That does not mean they call us that but if the term scummer is used, most would agree that it would probably be a saints fan.

If you have not heard that, then great. But I'm not the only one saying this

This is the best/most illogical argument.

If you arent a beered up tosspot pushing people over seats etc then you are a boring c*nt who isnt supporting the team.

Ok then. No middle ground there.

There clearly is a middle ground. Mabye thinking in the ground 'oh that lot', and not standing near them, but not moaning about it on a internet forum and throwing around stuck up,high and mighty insults. Calm down its a few lads having a laugh creating an atmosphere, the more of it the better, thought that was what following a football club away was about.

You are aware it's illegal to enter a stadium drunk and people have been arrested and banned for it? I presume you've never done that?

I never let off a smoke bomb on the terraces but I have to say they do look pretty cool on the TV when ive seen them in Italy Turkey etc. I still have am amazing mental image of what it was like that time in Rumania in the rain and wondered why we cant get that kind of atmosphere and of course its all to do with Elfnsafety. Which is fair enough.

I'm not supporting unsafe activity on the terraces but I must admit i do know what its like to be there supporting the team and I can imagine its a right buzz having one of those going off around you when Saints score and stuff like that.A right buzz. Especially if you've had a few beers.

So- you can be elfnsafety and condemn it if you like- and i will agree- but hopefully you can understand why it happened, how it happens and realise that this kind of stuff will AlWAYS happen when you get a bunch of lads hyped up at an away trip. Its not safe its bad for kids its all that stuff- but its also part and parcel of what makes up our most vocal loyalsupport. You probably cannot have one without the other.

Can't understand your logic? If they were carrying it they were intending to set it off so why wouldn't they get the same sentence? (Unless people are all carrying smoke bombs around with them as they make them look cool or something these days?)

Most def'! I carry around ten at all times. It's a great icebreaker in clubs. If you're struggling for conversation, just have a few jars, drop a couple of bombs, and before you know it, we're pushing each other back and forth. It's well bantz.

If you're going to get involved in this sort of thing, that's your call, but at least have the bottle to stand by your opinion and decision, rather than change your mind and remove your video when people start calling you out.

It's either harmless, entertaining, adding to the atmosphere and nothing to get upset over, therefore no reason to remove the video, or it's pathetic, chav-like behaviour and something to be ashamed of.
