Rickie Lambert

Our goal scoring genius is obviously 30 now but the question to ponder is as pace is not a big aspect of Rickie's game as it wasn't for TEDDY SHERINGHAM, could RL go on for a good few years more as SHERINGHAM did?

There's a big emphasis on bringing others in to the game, holding the ball up and class finishing for BOTH. I think Rickie could be with us for a good few more Influential years yet...

A Bristol Rovers supporter told me about Rickie Lambert a couple of years before we signed him, and how he was not "just" a Centre Forward who scored goals but dropped back bringing others into play. He thought RL could go on for years and that an advanced midfield role is where he would likely to end up "finding his natural position" that his range of passing could be fully used in.

The next time I saw him(still inL1 at the time), he was not in anyway bitter about RL having signed for us but pleased he had joined a bigger club, and hoped he might get a chance in the Premiership, either with us or move on. I only bump into this bloke at a day at Gloucestershire Cricket so be interested to speaking with him again this summer if chance arises (hopefully with Premiership status still intact).

SRL is a great player - iconic for Saints etc, and yes he's got more playing time for us. However, I don't think he will be playing for us to an age similar to Sheringham - not in the Prem anyway. He's only going to get slower and this team is mostly pedestrian as it is. In the Prem our front line needs to be lightening quick and accurate to beat the top defenders and achieve the dizzy heights of mid-table safety - I'm not sure (despite his attributes) he will feature in the team make-up in 2 years time let alone beyond that.

Pace is fine, but one thing that seems to unsettle most defenses is a player that has the confidence to slow everything down once they are in the 18 yard box. SRL is great at this, big, strong enough to out muscle defenders, and clever enough to find the right pass.

He might not be a regular for many more years but such a great option for something different from the bench for years to come, and a real presence in the dressing room.
