norwaysaint Posted 3 February, 2013 Share Posted 3 February, 2013 A friend just showed me a Twiiter link to Wigan fans complaining about saints fans fighting and women and kids getting hurt on the bridge. Know absolutely nothing else about it. Apparently a woman holding a child was punched in the face.
Saint_clark Posted 3 February, 2013 Share Posted 3 February, 2013 A woman holding a child was punched in the face? Did they try to eat her child afterwards? What a load of rubbish. Wigan fans seemed to be a funny bunch, that lot off to the left had a right chip on their shoulder.

Shroppie Posted 3 February, 2013 Share Posted 3 February, 2013 I crossed that bridge 15 mins after the game and there was no problem then except a bunch of Wigan yoof on the bank looking to wind up Saints fans. 2 police there watching. So unless it was earlier or much later, bit surprised. Disgusting if true.

View From The Top Posted 3 February, 2013 Share Posted 3 February, 2013 Kicked off more or less as we got to the bridge. Started by some Wigan lads who then legged it up onto the bridge and started spitting, & lobbing stuff down at the Saints fans. It was still going on as we cut across the car park. So that surprises me. unless the away days have changed so much in the last few years..then there are loads of helmets that go, get rowdy and very act like a tribe...it happens with every team..hence why football is policed to heavily.. no, no away games this season for me..but over the years....would say well over 200..including lower league games with argyle

Huffton Posted 3 February, 2013 Share Posted 3 February, 2013 Despite growing up through the 70s and 80s to this day I can't see how supporting a football team could make someone want to have a fight. But each to their own, if these knuckle heads want to kick ten shades of ****e out of each other over a shirt good luck to them, but why can't they restrain themselves enough to do it away from the normal people who just want to go and watch a football match? This is the main reason why I rarely travel away anymore, somethings wrong when you get started on by 5 or 6 of your own supporters for not joining in with yet another rendition of pompey fan on a string... I didn't see the start but got to the foot of the bridge within 1 minute of the shouting starting. There was a very upset female Wigan fan berating the Saints fans as there were lots of kids and older folks on the steps up to the bridge. On the bridge were Wigan lads getting very excited - lots of shouting, pushing etc but I didn't see any Wigan fans try to get down off the bridge to have a go at the Saints fans. The net result was that lots of by-standers got caught up in the event, the kids were very frightened, old folks were getting knocked around as people were moving quickly and pushing - it was very sad to be part of this event. Lallana's Left Peg Posted 3 February, 2013 Share Posted 3 February, 2013 Appeared to be a load of nonsense to me. Not sure what caused it to kick off but neither side wanted to get particularly 'nawty' whilst at the same time standing their ground. There was a lot of jostling about and to my eye it appeared innocent bystanders got caught up in it. Then when some distance was created between the two groups most interested in messing about people got more vocal and threatening - funny. But lets not pretend this was all Saints - there was plenty Wigan fans there interested in getting involved. I am not sure what caused the friction in the first place but it takes two to tango in football. Interestingly when I did make it over the other side of the canal the Police were then about and I overheard copper mention to some fans that things like this can happen because Wigan do not pay for proper policing at their games. So if that is true perhaps the Wigan fans may well be advised to contact their club to ask them why that is given what happened on Saturday (not that it excuses any violence, but if you are going to have a clear bottleneck hotspot for trouble like that pathetic bridge over the canal then you would think it may be wise to ensure it is a safe place on game days). Appy Posted 3 February, 2013 Share Posted 3 February, 2013 Like how all the trouble seems to be saints fans from some comments, I've been to hundreds of games over the past few seasons and fans don't get trouble unless they are looking for it. alehouseboys Posted 4 February, 2013 Share Posted 4 February, 2013 Further developments... Eye-witness Grandmother of 5, Mercedes Arkwright-Sidebottom of Blackpudding Lane, explained "Seen nowt like it in all me days. Must've been thousands of 'em, soft, southern, nazi-saluting skinheads marauding on t'bridge bashing everything in sight. I was beaten to within an inch of me life, saw little Tommy flying through t'air limbs hanging by thread, some ol' dear tipped out of wheelchair and thrown over side, landed on Marg's guide dog, killed outright, and 97 year old Cecil Ecclescake was impaled on his very own walking stick. Luckily a dozen or so Wigan Yoof got between all the women and kids and backed off the rampaging hordes until they all turned and ran for their lives. Thank God for our brave lads". I think there may be something in this.

I mean something like that really would get noticed, but nothing. Strange.... Not one person. I saw her comment that she was fine this morning apart for a sore jaw, if she'd taken a right hander flush on the jaw from a bloke she's going to go down or at very least off balance, as most people would yet she managed to carry on up the stairs carrying her child. So not one witness despite 100s of people seeing it, only very minor injuries on a small, slim girl after being punched in the face by a bloke. Not very convicing this little story is it. I expect that she got barged or bumped, maybe caught an elbow on the way past, it has now escalated to a punch in the face and this afternoon I expect she was beaten round the head by her own child. Personally, if you see it kicking off you make a choice, get involved if you have to defend yourself or fet out of the bloody way, if she was holding a two year old she probably should have done the latter

sfc1976 Posted 4 February, 2013 Share Posted 4 February, 2013 If the women in my life are anything to go by I've never known a group people exaggerate an initial event and then embellish it slightly every subsequent time it gets told. If we were attending a social event for example and some other women present said something the wife took offence to, by the time the fifth or sixth friend is told about the incident you'd have thought this woman had threatened to kill us and our families. As smirking says, my money would be on her getting pushed, and by the time the 4th bucket of pinot grigio got sunk later that evening it turned into a punch.
