Until we went to Wembley 76 and stuffed United...He wanted to win every week and drink Champers after that.

Reeves came off the bench for southend with ten minutes to go and the score 0-0, at home against Oxford. 4 minutes later southend got the winner. Seems like he impressed in the little time he had. Comments from their fans focused on his first touch, awareness of what was going on and his ability to quickly make a good decision. All very positive. Possiblity of starting in the JPT semi final against Orient on tuesday, wonder if it is on Sky?

He's miles better than that level, thought he was at least worth a championship loan. Massive coup for Southend to have a player of his ability.

Bumped in to the Bolton fans at the services. They asked if we could take him back t Southampton now!

No surprise, although Bolton isn't exactly a club to get your career going.

And Bolton, Blackburn and Wolves are fine examples of why getting relegated, no matter how strong your squad remains, doesn't equal an instant return.

http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/steve-de-ridder-shocked-by-bolton-1293832?

Steve de Ridder had no hesitation swapping Premier League life for the Championship when Dougie Freedman came calling.

And Wanderers’ on- loan winger from Southampton admits he’s surprised by his temporary club’s plight.

Bolton’s defeat at Watford last Saturday leaves them just three points off the relegation zone, albeit with a game in hand.

The Trotters face Burnley at the Reebok on Saturday followed by successive away trips to Nottingham Forest and Derby.

However, Belgian De Ridder is pleased to play his part in Freedman’s attempts to lift the Trotters up the table.

“This club deserves to be at the highest level,” said the 24-year-old after a brief first appearance at Vicarage Road.

“I can’t believe this club is in the Championship because it’s quite huge to be fair.

“I know, because I come from a Premier League club and this set-up is unbelievable.

“I am surprised, definitely (by the league position) but, to be fair, it’s not unusual to see clubs like Wolves and Birmingham around us in the table.

“It is hard because it is a different type of football from the Premier League into the Championship.

“So, I hope we can start adapting.”

De Ridder helped the Saints finish runners-up in the Championship last season. But he’s struggled for game time in the top flight this term.

“I knew Dougie Freedman was after me for a long time but Southampton didn’t let me go for a while,” he explained.

“In the end, I pushed it a bit because I needed more minutes.

“But it was only about 10pm on deadline day when it all went through, so I am a happy man to be here.

“To be fair, when I am here I just want to make the best of it.

“I am not thinking about Southampton.

“I want to perform here and the rest will come.”

Sounds like he's wanted to go for a while. Unsurprising seeing as though he's barely played since joining us.

Same. Hopefully he does well there for a month and then can go back out somewhere higher up.

Its not a great endorsment of our U21s that the captain and most consistent player is only good enough for L2!

Reeves is probably hampered by the fact most L1 and L2 teams play 4-4-2 which he isn't suited to.

He's also not much of a physical presence either. Would get bullied off the ball a lot in the lower leagues. He's got talent but needs to bulk up.

VERY mixed reactions from Bolton-fans on de Ridder:

http://www.the-wanderer.co.uk/boards/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=24363&sid=1d5a6352a1553e2760c058a499c8e9ad

my MOTM - De ridder. [...] Massively impressed with De ridder, C.Davies and Dawson.

De Ridder less **** than last week, but not particularly impressed. Doesn't look like even he knows what he is going to do.

De Ridder was brilliant I thought

De Ridder looked promising. Kept hold of the ball too long at times though and his final ball was lacking. Direct and mobile though, which is good.

De Ridder was sharp but not much end product.

Some guy near me was furious at de ridder being taken off, claiming he had been the best pkayer on the pitch. We thought he’d been pretty poor. A few step overs without really doing anything.

For me De Ridder looked sharp and a great footballer (Did anyone else notice he had a sharp word with Doogie when he was taken off) [...] De Ridder I thought played well in the 1st half and could turn out to be a very useful player for us for the short time he's here.

I'm surprised at the comments about De Ridder. I thought he was awful. He did a few nice bits of skill, but only when under no pressure. He showed no sort of intelligence or class. He's a show pony, who is very limited. Maybe he'll be better when he's fitter but, yeah, I thought he was terrible.

De Ridder was ok, I think he offers something. It was hardly a travesty that he was subbed though, he'd drifted out the game.

De Ridder and Eagles were both atrocious. Neither had any enforcement product but at least with Eagles, you know he's capable of it. The lack of intelligence De Ridder showed is worrying. Did he create a single chance once? Poor.

de Ridder is one of the few we've seen who's happy to take a man on. He kept the ball well and is still very new here. Calling him crap is ridiculous so soon.

Fans were booing the decision to take De Ridder off when he looked more of a threat.

De Ridder was taken off cos he's not fit - DF in after match questionning [...] As for De Ridder, on todays showing he's the new Riga...bit flash, created nowt. He might get better

That Ridder fella was rubbish as was Sordell.

De Ridder was our best player in the first half. He always shouted for and bullied his way to the ball, took players on and drove forward. Anyone who says he was **** clearly didn't fecking turn up today.

He had the ball lots but he didn't once do anything with it. In all the time he was on the pitch, he didn't open them up with a pass or break through their defence with a good run. All he did was a few fancy turns but he created nothing substantial, and it was absolutely the right decision to take him off.

I think that Eagles should have come off but maybe De Ridder was struggling with fitness and only had around 60 mins in him. I thought that he did ok, he was our main point of attack in the first half and put himself about to close the opposition. I especially like his ability to throw the defender by playing the ball the opposite way to which way his body is facing.

Today, he was tricky, direct, willing and pacy. Final ball key him down a couple of times and once or twice he kept hold of the ball a bit too long, but I'll put that down to keenness to impress. It was a decent first start and I'd start him again no problem in the next game.

Hmm, I though de Ridder was poor. A few step-overs and ran about a fair bit, but created nothing of substance. I gather he was good for Southampton last season, so hopefully he'll come good.

sorry, but i totally disagree. De ridders first half performance was amazing IMO. Straight from the off, he was fighting for possession and them "fancy turns" got him and the ball deeper into the Burnley half. He had the confidence to get on the ball and make things happen, something i feel our team is lacking.

It's clear that de Ridder splits opinion. For me, yesterday, I liked him. Direct, fast, tackling back and an eye for getting the thing into the middle

What's with the criticism of De Ridder? There were more than a handful of times the ball was thrown into the box. One being the fizz across the face of goal which was deflected out for a corner. His chasing down led to the first corner where if Dawson had done a little better would have been a goal. He's not afraid to take on players and did take it round them.

I think it's a fair comparison. Was the sort of attacking performance the know-nowts in the east lower love. 'He's got skillz, him'. Head down, beat two out of three and win a throw-in so folk think he's ace, but if he'd got his head up he could have made a five yard pass and we'd be in a good position. He was certainly less **** than last week, but he couldn't be that bad again. I said last week he could be trying too hard, and it's defo possible, but given he's only here for a month we haven't really got time for that. He's another with lots of ability but seemingly no brain.

This is spot on. Anyone who can do a fancy little flick with the ball automatically becomes brilliant with some fans De Ridder got into a few decent positions yesterday but instead of doing the sensible thing, he messed it up because he wanted to be fancy with it. Like you, I think there's a chance that he's trying too hard but if this is what he's capable of, he's a very limited player. He showed absolutely no footballing intelligence yesterday, which is worrying. For all his effort, there seemed to be very little ability. I'm not going to write him off though. Maybe he wants to come here, so is looking to make a big impression? Or maybe he was nervous because it was his first game at the Reebok? I don't know. Hopefully he improves

Better than our other options who have no ability and no brain. He wasn't just winning throw ins though. He was getting shots away, pinning the defender back, stretching Burnley and winning set pieces.

It certainly makes a change to see somebody direct, but I was screaming at him to pass it at least four times in the first half. He was far from our worst player but folk talking about an amazing performance and him being our best player are talking ********.

Conclusion?

In reality De Ridder's performance splits opinion. Which probably means he were ok, but not exactly brilliant.

The people who say he's a show pony without an end product are absolutely spot on. The people who are sticking up for him are the guys who get excited by a little bit of pace and a few tricks, but give it a few more weeks, when he still hasn't actually done anything, and they'll side with the other views.

Excuse ignorance but how many Saints are out on loan, seems like dozens, they'll have to be one helluva sort out when the season ends

Most the left overs from the last few seasons.

De Ridder, Barnard, Seaborne and Sharp plus a few kids, Hoskins and Reeves.

Only 6 but its all the guys who have no chance at first team really (and Sharp who well doesn't quite fit into the system at a guess). Martin was out on loan but got displaced when Palace bought 4 more cb's (and then noticed they won not playing him) so he came back.

Edit forgot Hammond, Dickson, Forecast and Forte! Hammond is off looking for a new club/getting game time incase we go down and need him back, other 3 are preparing for life when their saints contracts come to an end and they need work.

Brings the total up to 10!
