Anybody else feel this way?

With the way we dominate games and pin back our opponents we should be comfortably winning and yet our goal scoring record as of late (ever since we shored up defensively) has been really, really poor. IMO it is time to let go of the "Southampton Way" and do a West Ham - all hoofball, all direct, all ugly but with one golden little thing called END PRODUCT.

So frustrated after today FFS.

The "possession football" is working just our finishing has been woeful of late. We also seem a bit toothless in the final 3rd at times. Puncheon seemingly being found out now + he doesn't seem very good on the left.

On another note, I thought the pressing was brilliant, the way in which we constantly forced Wigan to play backwards. Really stifled them at times. A shame it was thrown away by two cheap goals.

Possession football begets chances, we simply need to work on sticking the ball away. That's going to remain a problem no matter what tactics are involved in the build-up play. The OP also seems to be forgetting that we had 2 or 3 sitters that, had they been buried, would've completely negated the argument.

2nd half was great, and we had more much about us in the final third. You'd pay to watch us like that

But posession football bugs the hell out of me when you don't go anywhere with it, or try to make an extra pass when it's easier to shoot etc like we did in the first half. Puncheon was guilty of that today, and is quite often tbh.

Nope! Sorry, but I want us to play like this rather than going down the Stoke or West Ham route. This team is good, great to watch and will get better.

Can't see us going down as we will win games. I'm less worried now than a month ago.

It's a game of opinions of course but for me something is right with this team and I did not really understand that until I saw them play live for the first time.

Nope. Beautiful to watch and with a few better players it will be even better.

Rather that then long ball mode or total football. We are only in our first season back in the pl and to be playing the way we are is just amazing to see.

Still scoring goals and if people defended better we would have more points. Proud to be a Saints fan and proud of the way we are playing. Watching us 2nd half at old Trafford was a joy to behold.

Get better defence wise and we will be a very good team.

Next season I think we will bring in far better defenders.

This style of play will take us somewhere very very good in the long run.

But if you rather go back to the "Lowe times" when we scrap and scrap all season, finish 14th +-3 places every year fine, but I dont want that.....

This club now wants more and this IS the way to go and why we in the long run will be so much better than West H(-oof th)am, Sunderland, Stoke etc etc.

It will take time but we have to get used to the thought that we will be a club that are going places cause deep down so many fans are stuck in "the small club" thoughts....

Well I for one do not feel that way. We are "work in progress" and I like the way we are going. I wouldn't feel like that if we were hoof merchants. Sooner or later that type of football gets found out at the top level.

Look back and remember the brilliant job a pretty average Italy team did on England during the Euro's - the ball is precious and keeping possession of it is key in the modern game. Now it's true that sideways, or backwards, passes alone won't win you football matches because you have to temper that possession football with the obvious need to penetrate opposition defences and create scoring chances.

But the old long ball game is dying out and the style of high tempo attacking/possession football we are currently pursuing is surely the right way forward.

Way I see it is that we are obviously NOT a top top side... we have some qaulity, but its a young side that is improving. BUT to our credit we are TRYING to play like one. Sure we do not have the quality in all areas to avoid stupid erors, and it will not work a fluidly as sides with better players, but much rather watch this than a direct style of old. Sadly the cash of he prem has mad too many in football see survival as the be and end all irrespective of how its achieved... as a result the national side suffers as the top sides have limited opportiunity for young English players and the rst try and play a style tahyt is in most parts outdated... Glad we TRY and play the game in this way. when we iron out the mistakes we WILL give someone a pasting - could well be Man City! :p

I think the club/TEAM/squad is improving all the time..

At times great football played..

At times still schoolboy errors.

BUT generally a joy to be a Saints supporter..

We have to ignore the spoilt brats. idiots , WUM

and concentrate on our support..

Not against good old debate....FFS some of the idiots drive you up the wall..

Well done Saints.

Jesus. You sound like the guy sat a couple of rows behind me today. Stop being so fickle and have a little patience. We are in a transition period with our new manager. The performances have improved dramatically, the results, goals, clean sheets, etc are things to be ironed out over the next couple of weeks. Don't forget we scored 2 goals today, and deservedly so - the only thing that stopped us winning today was poor set piece defending.

When things come good they will come very very good judging by these performances. And what evidence can you see that playing long ball football will be any more effective?? We don't have the players for it (with the exception of Lambert who can offer a great outlet if we need to mix things up whilst playing mainly shorter balls in order to send the opposition defence back an extra 5 yards which will create more room in the middle third when we don't play the longer ball).

Dear OP.

If you don't like the football we are producing then go and watch Videos from the Branfoot era.

That is all

And that was me being polite.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. And I am entitled to say that yours is moronic

i agree db, people should try and remember how poor we were inthe prem when we got relegated. personally like to see saints playnsome football. things are on the up IMO

We're decent at keeping the ball but lack penetration due to the lack of pace and movement up front. When we get a better striker in we will have twice as many options and should become much less easy to defend against.

At the moment we go through massive spells of playing pointless one-twos in front of banks of 8 defenders who are constantly able to adjust because we rarely play balls through them or shoot, so they never have to break ranks. We need to move the ball more quickly and run at defences more to mix things up. When Shaw and Rodriguez started to do it Wigan couldn't cope. The rest of the time they let us faff and defended well enough.

Early on a bit of hoofball was surprisingly successful for us, probably as Wigan didn't expect it and that's one of Lambert's strengths.

I agree and I think that is why playing RL in the hole with JR up front could benefit us better. RL drops a lot as he hasn't any pace and it leaves us light up top.

Watched the whole game on delay at 8.30 this morning (so I slept in and managed to avoid knowing the score beforehand). Strange game. 2 really good goals by us. 2 even better chances missed. 2 soft goals (Yoshida, if you're going to leave your man and go for the header, you HAVE to head it!) from set pieces. Not sure why Clyne went off and dropped Cork back into defence, disrupting the midfield role that he had been doing superbly imho. Should have been Puncheon off at that point. Really enjoyed watching the whole game and was really expecting Ricky to earn a pen and get his 100th, rather than Wigan sneaking an undeserved equalise.

I certainly didn't think we were playing pretty football. There was good pressing up front and controlled passing out from the back (other than when it was passed back to Boruc who had little option but to hoof it up the field. Shame Shaw left the near post for the equaliser as he had played superbly up to that point. Schneiderlin and Cork were superb in midfield. Lambert had a great game up front and some of his passes were exquisite. JayRod looked the part, and Boruc is looking more and more assured. As most have already said, Ramirez was disappointing and Puncheon flattered to deceive and frequently chose the wrong option, just like Wednesday.

2 points out of 9 could and should have been 7. Hopefully that's our dodgy spell out the way and we can play with the same intensity and passion and we'll get some luck for a change.

What happens if at the end of March we've battered everyone in the next six games but lost to City and Chelsea and only drawn the other four? Would people still be happy that we're going in the right direction? We'd more than likely be bottom three.

What are the alternatives? we are building a young team with an eye to future. If you want the players to realise their full potential you have to play the game properly and what we are trying to do is the proper way, it is good to watch and when mastered very difficult to counter. I know the Barcelona thing has been over used but I don't see anyone complaining about their possession style football. The old adage that the opposition can't score if you have the ball is a fundamental truth. We are playing in the PL and it seems some are surprised that the other teams can also play football!

On the assumption that this isn't a wind, no I love possession football. Like a lot of West Ham fans I would hate to have to watch their style week in and week out. I'd be happy if they went down with the dinosaurs. As for end product, West Ham have scored 28 and we've scored 33.
