St Marco Posted 6 February, 2013 Share Posted 6 February, 2013 Yes both parties aren't exactly acting like grown ups here but I cant believe some of the negative comments on here against MLT, it beggars belief Years from now no one will remember Cortese, he will hopefully be a very small footnote in our clubs history. But MLT has given us some of our greatest ever moments and memories as Saints fans and for what he did for the club should always deserve our respect. The thing about time is people forget. For example my 12 year old nephew is a die hard Saints fan and goes with his dad to the games with us at home. You ask him who scored our fa cup goal and he won't have a clue. Ask him who is our all time greatest scorer and he won't have a clue. Each of these people had huge importance on our history but as each new generation comes around they are pushed further and further away. To our generation Matty is a god on the pitch. But to the generation below who never saw him play he is just another guy. When I was a young kid everyone talked about how amazing Channon was. My dad will tell you he was better then MLT or at least more important. Now it is Rickie Lambert. Time moves on and legends of one era are forgotten by the next. Fitzhugh Fella Posted 6 February, 2013 Share Posted 6 February, 2013 Does anyone know why it's taken so long for the Benali vs Cortese case to reach court? Standard stuff really... why weaken your position by indicating that you might settle. Sides will always want to stand firm until such time as it might suit them to settle. benjii Posted 6 February, 2013 Share Posted 6 February, 2013 Le Tiss is continuing to damage his legacy. It's a shame if he just thinks he's sticking up for a mate but all he's doing is making himself look like a tool. If Benali has valid financial claims with SFC then the courts or an alternative form of dispute resolution are the appropriate channels. Snide remarks on Twitter, on TV and in the media are not. I actually feel sorry for Franny as this is probably getting him more unwanted attention then he needs. This goes to a wider problem with Twitter, Facebook etc... in fact democracy. Some people shouldn't be given a platform. Matt, shut up. On the contrary, I think it helps us work out who is worth paying attention to or not. I don't necessarily mean Le Tiss specifically. You think football is immune to this thing called time. I bet you think everyone today knows who Vera Lynn is too right? As for the just another guy remark...sorry but I don't see Ted Bates like that. I was not born when he played, not alive when he managed, not alive when he was assistant manager when we won the cup. I only really knew who he was when he was given his MBE. That made me notice all the things he did before I was born and made me see not only what a great guy he was but what a unique life he has. One that demands respect. I maybe wrong about this so sure Duncan can correct me but it was shortly after his sad passing that a statue was talked about. Why is it we only seem to build statues after people die? If all these people are important to everyone at everytime then why are they not made now? Why don't we have a Mick Channon statue? @ JM In all honesty I don't know who the first two are on the banner. If that makes me less of a fan then so be it. Depressed of Shirley Posted 6 February, 2013 Share Posted 6 February, 2013 The thing is, I was very lucky to see MLT play for us, and was very lucky to see Markus and NC save the whole club. I am glad that MLT was playing and not running the thing, and equally happy NC is running the club, and not playing. MLT as a player will never be forgotten, but on this issue, I don't blame Cortese at all for not talking to him. The constant digs, without ever actually saying what the reasons are, make MLT look small and petty, and unless he really wants to come out and put in print what the reasons are, he will continue to look bad. All I want is for the club to be as successful as possible. If MLT was saying that NC was running the club into the ground, and the evidence was there to see it, then fine. But it just looks like a squabble between two personalities that has no potential upside for either of them.

Mine is that sadly as time goes by people in our generation who we consider important are not as seen as important to the next. They have their own favourites and create new legends. Yours is that everyone has to know everyone who played for the club and think of them all as legends and if you don't know who they are then your disrespectful. Everyone is remembered for all time. CanadaSaint Posted 6 February, 2013 Share Posted 6 February, 2013 I'm surprised that the "lost ambassadorial fees" comment is receiving so little attention on here. Could it be that Matt and Lawrie have also suffered lost ambassadorial fees (they are more deserving of that kind of role than Benali ever was), and therefore have more than a passing interest in how Benali fares in his court case? Enough of an interest to fan the flames? It doesn't seem that long ago (it was when the club was in dire straits) that people on here were railing against Lawrie for what he was supposedly taking out of the club. There's much more to this than meets the eye, and I suspect that the obscured parts are more in Cortese's favour than the visible parts.

Professor Posted 6 February, 2013 Share Posted 6 February, 2013 A word to the wise, Matt; we all love you in Southampton and nothing can ever take anything away from what you did for the Saints but as a football pundit, it would be better if you moved on. Like any other fan, you are entitled to your opinions, as are we all, but the problem for you is that your profile will always mean that anything you say in a public space will get more publicity than it should and can even damage your reputation. Might be best just to settle down, enjoy Saints' results if they go the right way and watch to see if the new regime can achieve things equal to or better than the Lawrie Mac era and beyond the performances in your time, when so often the team relied too heavily on you.
