Cortese and Le Tissier arrange meeting

All he had to do was say a meeting had been agreed and leave it at that until the meeting took place. Instead he had more digs in the press about it and then The Echo decided to go about it. I'm not suprised it's been cancelled

I agree. Also after Tiss complained about having to wait 4 weeks when it was confirmed, I'm not at all surprised its ended up like this. Getting pathetic now.

To be fair, the club statement is fairly clear - if you agree to private "peace talks" you shouldnt then go around and tell people about it, and then compound that with yet more digs...

I would suggest MLT doesn't really want to meet NC privately because then he would most likely have to quieten down afterwards.

Seems to me that MLT's issues are very personal and have little to nothing to do with how the club is run (which is generally very well).

Cortese wants it to be private. MLT wants it to be very public.

Personal disputes best kept private IMO.

Exactly this. Matt's job is now in the media, he needs to keep his profile up and I hate to say it but some of the media attention is probably motivating his grudge. The more of a big deal he makes of it the more attention it gets. NC has probably thought, **** it then cancel the meeting.

To save Leicestersaint the hassle - This is ridiculous. I love Le tiss, I'm his number one fan etc etc

Southampton executive chairman Nicola Cortese has cancelled clear-the-air talks with Matthew Le Tissier after claiming the former Saints forward failed to act in good faith.

Le Tissier, who was critical of Cortese's decision to sack manager Nigel Adkins and replace him with former Espanyol boss Mauricio Pochettino, had called for a meeting with Cortese.

Le Tissier later revealed talks had been scheduled for four weeks' time, but Southampton have today told Press Association Sport that those discussions are now off.

"A meeting was organised between Nicola Cortese, the club's executive chairman, and Matthew Le Tissier in what the club believed was good faith," a club spokesman said.

"Both parties had agreed that it would be a private meeting with no publicity surrounding it, yet within 24 hours this matter was put in the public domain and further negative comments attributed to Mr Le Tissier have appeared this morning.

"As an ex-player, Mr Le Tissier's achievements are well known.

"However, his repeated criticisms over a prolonged period of time are not justified and have not merited any response from the club. Nor has the motive for these personal attacks ever been made entirely clear.

"Mr Cortese wishes to reiterate that he will not make comment about somebody he does not know personally - and that includes Mr Le Tissier.

"These criticisms have not affected the club's success and progress on or off the pitch in recent years and will not divert the club from its course in the future.

"For Mr Le Tissier to agree to meet 'in good faith' and then make such comments can only be seen as a breach of good faith and certainly not in the best interests of the club.

"Mr Le Tissier also refers to his friend Francis Benali having the best interests of the club at heart, while neglecting to mention that the same person is currently suing Southampton Football Club in relation to a lease dispute and lost ambassadorial fees.

"It is a legal action the club will be defending rigorously in the best interests of the club and its reputation.

"In all the circumstances and in light of the comments attributed to Mr Le Tissier, the club believes that it is now not possible for the above mentioned meeting to take place in good faith.

"We would nevertheless encourage Mr Le Tissier to join with our fans and continue to enjoy the success the club has achieved over the last three and a half years.

"The club now considers this matter closed and will not be making any further comment about it."

Not surprised what so ever. There was no need for him to make those sarky comments, no need what so ever.

He should have just accepted it, and responded to the question with a normal answer ''Yep, arranged in a few weeks''. There was absolutely no reason to be sarky, it was an opportunity for them to chat.

NC has not cocked this up, MLT has been an idiot here. I've got a feeling he's starting to like the feud...

I agree...I really get the impression matty had his bluff called with NC agreeing to meet him...

I get the impression that this whole mess has aboslutely nothing to do with football either

in relation to a lease dispute and lost ambassadorial fees.

Of course this all about what's best for SFC and absoultely nothing to do with personal losses or noses being put out re past priviledges and financial arrangements.

I get the sense that the club have lost patience and decided to let this slip to try and shut a few people up.

I don't love either diggers TBH, both like a couple of spoilt kids arguing over a toy. I love what Matt did on the pitch but am bored of the digs and trying to steal the media attention. You can love the player and the achievements but only have a mild liking for the person can't you? Let's face it, if it wasn't for his Mrs, he would be having a public argument with Daniel Levy right now.

Well I think it's been widely known for a while that this doesn't stem from NC's general running of the club, how could it? Tne success we've had under NC has been there for all to see.

The fact that a group of ex saints (not all but some) are involved is a series of personal disputes which have escalated to this extent is a shame but when the players cross the line on a Saturday, none of it matters one little bit.

I think so as well but the CoMLT won;t have any of that. It's all or nothing.

Look forward to Jeff Stellings next rant on Soccer Saturday on behalf of MLT.

Why couldn't Le Tiss just keep his mouth shut for a bit? Anyone would think he didn't actually want the meeting.

This. I read his comments on the Echo this morning and thought Cortese wouldn't agree to the meeting after that and seems I was right. Almost as if MLT provoked this reaction.

Seems like more and more of our fan base are supporting Cortese in this feud.

It's hard not to though, because MLT is just looking like child in all this. He's not being professional at all and is trying to use his TV personality to menouvre himself into a ''feel sorry for me'' position. I don't know what the fued is all about, but what i do know is that NC has kept quiet, hasn't bickered or gossiped. The club/NC have agreed to have a meeting to clear the air.

MLT then blabs, *****es and goes all sarky about it. Yep, clever.

I imagine there will be another unnecessary, ill advised rant on Saturday.

Just seems very petty, why couldn't they deal with this while clearing the air?

Well it seems NC was willing to attempt at "clearing the air" under the provision that it's kept out of the public domain. Not only has MLT almost immediately disregarded that, he's continued the digs in public. He obviously was never that bothered about the meeting in the first place and is probably a good result for MLT as it even with a meeting, it's unlikely that all the issues extending to MLT's mates would be resolved anyway.

NC doesn't seem to have much choice here, would you meet with someone for "clear the air" talks if they were to continue to make personal digs in the public domain?

i was joking ffs...i clearly saw your post about this being Matts fault this time..

when is it not MLT's fault? He just can't keep his mouth closed, always looking to score points. If he'd have had half the obstination in his career that he he has displayed over Cortese he'd have won a whole lot more cups, medals and caps.

Why would Le Tiss need to raise his media profile? He gets plenty of easy, well paid work.

Yes for the first time in this stupid dispute my sympathies have swung from MLT to Cortese.

Of course I love our greatest ever player infinitely more than that I ever will Cortese, whatever he does with the club, but in this matter MLT has put himself in the wrong.

The same reason Jordan keeps getting married and those knobheads keep doing dragons den - keep the profile up and stay in the public eye. Plus fame is addictive and attention is flattering.

it's very clever from Cortese though. Agree to the meeting a few days before MLT's Q&A where he knows he'd be asked probing questions on the subject. Cortese then gets to cancel the meeting blaming Matt, MLT looks like the bad guy and Cortese can say he was happy to sort out their issues but MLT messed it up, regardless of if he had any intention of doing so or not. THe fans blame MLT and NC is internet peoples friend again. A masterstroke in PR from Cortese and very clever.
