SaintJackoInHurworth Posted 31 January, 2013 Share Posted 31 January, 2013 OK - getting ahead of myself here seeing as the transfer window has not yet closed, but... ...when do we have to submit our new squad numbers and list to the Premier League? And what happens to new players in the meantime? So, for example, some people were surprised that Forren wasn't in the squad against Man Utd, but could that have been because he hadn't been allocated a place in our official squad? Also taking into account the players that have been loaned out, where does that leave us in terms of spaces in the squad for the rest of the season? Lastly, if we have surplus places in the squad would we be able to take players on loan after tonight?
Saint Garrett Posted 31 January, 2013 Share Posted 31 January, 2013 First team squad....Looking a tad light certainly.... 1 GK Kelvin Davis 2 DF Nathaniel Clyne 3 DF Maya Yoshida 4 MF Morgan Schneiderlin 5 DF Jos Hooiveld 6 DF José Fonte (vice-captain) 7 FW Rickie Lambert 8 MF Steven Davis 9 FW Jay Rodriguez 10 MF Gastón Ramírez 12 GK Paulo Gazzaniga 13 DF Danny Fox 15 DF Vegard Forren 16 MF James Ward-Prowse 18 MF Jack Cork 19 FW Tadanari Lee 20 MF Adam Lallana (captain) 21 FW Guly do Prado 22 DF Frazer Richardson 23 DF Luke Shaw 24 FW Emmanuel Mayuka 26 DF Jack Stephens 27 MF Richard Chaplow 28 MF Calum Chambers 30 GK Cody Cropper 31 GK Artur Boruc 32 DF Danny Butterfield 34 MF Corby Moore 36 FW Jake Sinclair 37 MF Dominic Gape 38 MF Andy Robinson 39 MF Lloyd Isgrove 42 MF Jason Puncheon

Having sent Seabourne and De Ridder out on loan and brought in Forren that I assume leaves us with one spare outfield place and one goalkeeping place? Or have we got another older player that may now get an official squad number?
stevegrant Posted 31 January, 2013 Share Posted 31 January, 2013 I don't think we named the full 25 players over the age of 21, so Forren simply slots into one of the free places. I assume MLG will be along shortly to confirm either way.
Matthew Le God Posted 31 January, 2013 Share Posted 31 January, 2013 (edited) I don't think we named the full 25 players over the age of 21. Correct, Saints named 23 players. September 2012... Southampton - 25 squad players Player Home Grown 1 Butterfield, Daniel Paul Yes 2 Chaplow, Richard David Yes 3 Cork, Jack Frank Porteous Yes 4 Davis, Kelvin Geoffery Yes 5 Davis, Steven Yes 6 De Ridder, Steve Danny Marc No 7 Dickson, Ryan Anthony Yes 8 Do Prado Raymundo, Guilherme No 9 Fonte, Jose Miguel No 10 Forte, Jonathan Ronald James Yes 11 Fox, Daniel Yes 12 Hooiveld, Jos No 13 Lallana, Adam David Yes 14 Lambert, Rickie Lee Yes 15 Lee, Tadanari No 16 Mayuka, Emmanuel No 17 Puncheon, Jason David Ian Yes 18 Ramirez Pereyra, Gaston Exequiel No 19 Richardson, Frazer Yes 20 Rodriguez, Jay Enriqus Yes 21 Schneiderlin, Morgan Yes 22 Seaborne, Daniel Anthony Yes 23 Yoshida, Maya No http://www.premierleague.com/content/dam/premierleague/site-content/News/publications/squad-lists/Squad-Lists-September-2012.pdf The rules... For the 2012/13 season each club had a deadline on 4th September to submit a squad containing no more than 17 players who do not fulfil the Home Grown Player criteria. The remainder of the squad, up to a total of 25 players, must be Home Grown. A Home Grown Player means a player who, irrespective of his nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the Season during which he turns 21). Changes to the squad list of 25 may be made during the period of a Transfer Window. U21 players are eligible over and above the limit of 25 players/squad. For the 2012/13 campaign Under 21 players will have been born on or after 1st January 1991. Edited 31 January, 2013 by Matthew Le God

Turkish Posted 1 February, 2013 Share Posted 1 February, 2013 I don't think my symbol would look like that... (now that has opened myself up for abuse) Saints spent over £35m on players this season, the last game saw them outplay Man Utd at Old Trafford with 21 shots on goal. Yet people complain! The9 Posted 1 February, 2013 Share Posted 1 February, 2013 There are a few things missing from those rules. If we have fewer than 25 over 21s we can still sign players who are unattached or out of contract. However, if we have 25 contracted professionals (even if they're out on loan) we have to name them. We don't have any slots left for more signings now anyway. I don't think that original 23 included Boruc, though I may be wrong.

wireframebox Posted 1 February, 2013 Share Posted 1 February, 2013 The 'Transfer Window' should actually be called the 'Registration Window', and in turn, answer your question.
VectisSaint Posted 1 February, 2013 Share Posted 1 February, 2013 We added Boruc to the original list, Aaron Martin is back with us and would need to be named, and Forren has to be added in. So shipping out Seaborne and SDR was probably necessary, probably leaves us with 24, so space for a free agent. No loans allowd in as far as I know. Actually 4 gone from original list so we'll probably be down to 21 or 22 named over 21 players. Really should be ok for 14 games.

disconnect Posted 1 February, 2013 Share Posted 1 February, 2013 Is Butterfield not leaving for MLS, and therefore free-ing up another space? It seems different people are saying different things. The way I understood was that you could name the squad, and bring in an unattached player if you had space at a later time. It's unlikely that there's a player as good as Boruc out there this time though (Riquelme aside)!

Window Cleaner Posted 1 February, 2013 Share Posted 1 February, 2013 23 last September, so no. It's a tendancy of your average Saints fan to underage any local lad who's not doing as well as might be expected. As we have seen at SFC of late, if you're good enough you're in the first team squad at 17/18 and getting games. If you aren't doing that you're probably not good enough and will end up at Bournemouth,Rotherham or Lincoln.

Its a position that needs a bit more maturity and experience, not to mention a bit more physicality. One of the things the Academy system does not address well in my opinion, works well for FBs, MF, wingers and to some extent strikers, but CB and GKs not so well. Martin is that the age now where he should be breaking through, no idea what went wrong at Palace, he was looking good in the Championship last year, at least as a decent back up, maybe Eastleigh to PL is a step too far.
