Saint Charlie Posted 30 January, 2013 Posted 30 January, 2013 Steady Model Professional - Unfairly targetted by Fans OR Talentless Scottish Plodder - Stick to Golf Discuss. Saints Apps: 127 Saints Goals: 1
Saint Charlie Posted 30 January, 2013 Author Posted 30 January, 2013 (edited) For me he was decent at RB and always did a solid if unspectacular job. In midfield he didn't offer a lot, was very one-paced and didn't have a great deal of quality. The stick he used to get was unwarranted though, he never let anyone down and the goal vs Newcastle was class. Edited 30 January, 2013 by Saint Charlie
ToreSF Posted 30 January, 2013 Posted 30 January, 2013 A talentless scottish plodder who also was a model professional, which have made him able to have a active career as a talentless scottish plodder for 25 years.
Saint Charlie Posted 30 January, 2013 Author Posted 30 January, 2013 A talentless scottish plodder who also was a model professional, which have made him able to have a active career as a talentless scottish plodder for 25 years. Decent summary. Strachan also used to say he was the fittest member of the squad which obviously links to the professionalism and helped him make the best of his limited abilities. Apparantly a top notch golfer though, and always seemed a decent bloke.
Crowds Posted 30 January, 2013 Posted 30 January, 2013 Headless chicken cannot believe Celtic paid us 300k for him!!!
Thedelldays Posted 30 January, 2013 Posted 30 January, 2013 model pro...always gave his all...just not very good...but did a good job with williams when he first came in
Le Timmier Posted 30 January, 2013 Posted 30 January, 2013 Very poor player................... Played regularly in a team that finished 8th and reached the cup final so I think 'very poor' is going a bit far
Colinjb Posted 30 January, 2013 Posted 30 January, 2013 A model pro and unfairly castigated when we were relegated. Not the most talented of players but he always played a part, quietly getting on with things and doing the job to the best of his ability. He wasn't the reason we went down. If players such as Davenport, Bernard, Delap and Beattie (Yes, the muffin man) had shown even half his desire, professionalism and willing that year we would have survived. That he went on to play for Celtic in the knock out stages of the Champions League shows that he was a player we could have benefited from in the Championship.
Tomobz Posted 30 January, 2013 Posted 30 January, 2013 I've played a lot of golf with Paul, he's a very good player. He won the Stoneham Club Championship a couple of years ago which is a good victory with the players they have there.
John Boy Saint Posted 30 January, 2013 Posted 30 January, 2013 As Lawrie Mac always said "A good team is made up of Violinists and Roadsweepers" without a doubt Telfer was a road-sweeper in that analogy. Took a very professional approach to his career, hence why he was so fit, I always thought he did alright for us and we have had far worse. Use to know a bloke through work who was a massive Coventry fan, and knew Telfer socially, he said Telfer never talked about football when they were out together either at a party or when they were out to dinner just with their Wives.

A perfectly decent right back and more than adequate cover at right mid when needed.

Far better than many others who occupied the RB slot in the years after he left.
JPTCount Posted 30 January, 2013 Posted 30 January, 2013 his lob against newcastle (last day of the season??) in the closing minutes sticks with me, think it was also the same game tahar el kalej stopped dyer from going to the WC. the rest of the time he was one of my scapegoats
Elias Posted 30 January, 2013 Posted 30 January, 2013 Was it the Man United home game in 03/04 that Telfer played out of position in centre midfield and ended up playing a blinder? Beattie with a 90th minute header to win it.
Brussels Saint Posted 30 January, 2013 Posted 30 January, 2013 Half decent right back, but very average in midfield. I understand why Strachan picked him over Fernandes for the cup final, but it still feels wrong.

Beattie with a 90th minute header to win it. He kept Roy Keane very quiet that day if I remember correctly. Liked him. A team player who would play wherever asked to. Think he scored against Newcastle in a last home game of the season ?

david in sweden Posted 30 January, 2013 Posted 30 January, 2013 given the choice of the options on the OP....I'd say a little bit of both
Cascadia Saint Posted 30 January, 2013 Posted 30 January, 2013 These are getting soooooo boring! ZZzZz. Just saying I'd spend more time complaining to whoever tied you to a chair and forced you to read them, if i were you...
