SaintJackoInHurworth Posted 28 January, 2013 Posted 28 January, 2013 According to his pre-Man Utd interview, Pochettino is suggesting it is unlikely we will bring in any further transfers unless there are "any developments" in the transfer market: http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/news/article/manager-seeks-old-trafford-inspiration-624917.aspx So what do people think about that? * Is that suggesting that Coutinho was our only real target and so our only chance of signing a player is if the Liverpool transfer falls through? * Is that going to leave us short against Man Utd (and Wigan?) if Lallana is not yet fully match fit and Guly is also out injured? * Are people happy that we have enough cover in every position? * Is this good news because it means we are also not going to be selling any key players like Lambert?
Saint Charlie Posted 28 January, 2013 Posted 28 January, 2013 The cost needed to improve the first team goes up all the time. Whilst another attacking midfielder would be nice I agree there is no point unless they are better than what we have, hence we tried for Coutinho but unless we know someone else who is a very high level there is no point wasting money. I would be happy if we got a loan in til end of the season, especially as he says Guly might be out for a few weeks, does leave us light in that position. Aside from that position we have enough cover IMO. I see some mentions of centre mids but then that would put JWP to 5th choice and would make NC and MP's word about the academy seem very hollow.
pangy Posted 28 January, 2013 Posted 28 January, 2013 I dont think selling any of our players was a option. I am not sure if we had put all our eggs in the basket with Coutinho and had hoped MP would be able to attract him. New manager and all that,he may have ideas on how to use players better than NA (Mayuka,J-rod etc) Saying that having De Ridder,Davis and Jos does not feel me with great confidence. If we can keep the momentum and spirit that we have going I hope we can do enough to survive.
KelvinsRightGlove Posted 28 January, 2013 Posted 28 January, 2013 Meh not really fussed. Have said on one of the many threads on a similar theme that I still think we will sign one more, based on little more than a hunch (not remotely ITK). Was worried bout GK, but Boruc seems to have sorted out whatever the issue there was. Forren I think will be a good addition. Other than that, I don't see the point in signing players for the sake of keeping those who like to get red in the face, stamp their feet and soak their pampers about a lack of transfer activity. The team is showing it is good enough for the Prem, signings should improve the squad, not simply make up the numbers Don't believe there was ever much chance of us selling anyone other than obvious fringe players. In short, I wouldn't throw the fit some on here will if no-one else comes in.
Mowgli Posted 28 January, 2013 Posted 28 January, 2013 I think we will be OK with the current squad. I think the idea that MP would attract better players is a myth. Similarly I think the suggestion that we were seriously bidding for Coutnho is a myth. My feeling is that NC felt MP was the right man to bring the best out of the current squad. If I am right we will see a revitalised Guly, Lee, Mayuka, Ward Prowse and maybe even De Ridder. Guly and JWP have had their moments this season but I cannot believe the others are as poor as their cameo performances suggest.

Steven Davis has been much improved lately - he was certainly one of our best players against Arsenal.
Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 28 January, 2013 Posted 28 January, 2013 Boruc has improved, we got Forren in, I'm pretty happy.
Appy Posted 28 January, 2013 Posted 28 January, 2013 He didn't say we weren't going to sign anyone, he said we aren't signing anyone for the sake of it.
Bearsy Posted 28 January, 2013 Posted 28 January, 2013 http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/news/article/manager-seeks-old-trafford-inspiration-624917.aspx Surprised to learn that Old Trafford is mythical. Pretty sure I've been there!
Saint Charlie Posted 28 January, 2013 Posted 28 January, 2013 He didn't say we weren't going to sign anyone, he said we aren't signing anyone for the sake of it. He did also say we aren't currently in talks for any players - well there is only 3 days to go and from his comments it looks like he is genuinely happy with the squad as it stands. Unlikely that someone who will suddently enhance the squad will become available tomorrow but isn't now.
ericb Posted 28 January, 2013 Posted 28 January, 2013 Surprised to learn that Old Trafford is mythical. Pretty sure I've been there! Me too, but then given the amount of drugs i was taking around that time i wouldn't be surprised if i had visited a mythical stadium that only existed in my head
Wade Garrett Posted 28 January, 2013 Posted 28 January, 2013 Moyes was saying the same thing, and then the go and spend £8m on a Dutch international. Redknapp saying the Odemwingie deal probably won't happen as it was made too public. I wouldn't be at all surprised if we made another signing.

Moyes has said for a while, including this morning in the press that they would be adding to their squad. Redknapp says whatever he wants - wouldnt take much notice of him, Im sure Odemwingie will end up there.
teacher Posted 28 January, 2013 Posted 28 January, 2013 I'm still convinced that we will bring at least 1 more signing before the window closes.
Crab Lungs Posted 28 January, 2013 Posted 28 January, 2013 We've got bids in, I think it's down to whether the selling club can be persuaded/need to accept. Usual transfer strategy.
BILLY Posted 28 January, 2013 Posted 28 January, 2013 Disappointed we haven't made a couple of more signings, another CB/LB and possibly another Forward would have been nice. Also disappointed we haven't managed to off load De Ridder, Chaplow and the other dead wood.

suewhistle Posted 28 January, 2013 Posted 28 January, 2013 (edited) Surprised to learn that Old Trafford is mythical. Pretty sure I've been there! I suspect Spanish is similar to Italian. If someone says 'sei mito' it means 'you're a star', a legend. Probably 'legendary' would be a better translation. edit for grammar - aargh! Edited 28 January, 2013 by suewhistle
Lallana's Left Peg Posted 28 January, 2013 Posted 28 January, 2013 Lets wait and see what the Pochettino tactic gets out of the players before we worry too much about a lack of faces. It appears clear to me that Pochettino couldn't give two ****s about how the opposition play and is entirely focussed on what he wants Saints to do so lets see if the likes of Chaplow, De Ridder, and Lee can contribute before we worry about a lack of new faces. On the face of it the intensity of the work and type of football Pochettino likes to play certainly lends itself towards using a lot of the squad. Perhaps the new management is going to give the squad a boost (starting from a clean slate etc.) which will mitigate any risk of going stale and the need for new players.
labibs Posted 28 January, 2013 Posted 28 January, 2013 They're right in that it isn't worth signing someone unless they are better than what we have and would be challenging for our first team place if everyone was fit. A first choice front 4 of AL / GR / JP behind SRL is good enough to stay up, the issue being that they pretty much know they are playing every week. We need to someone to come in and put their place under pressure a bit. Those kind of players are difficult to sign in January, particularly for a club with the threat of relegation hanging over it. Even if you can get them, you usually have to pay way over the odds to do so. I also imagine that MP will want to see what our players can do before bringing in new players. As mentioned above, the likes of Lee, Mayuka & Chaplow have hardly had a kick this season [for our variety of reasons] and it may be that MP can get something more out of them.
JoeShmoe Posted 28 January, 2013 Posted 28 January, 2013 Unlikely to make any transfers = 2 or 3 in and out

Dig Dig Posted 28 January, 2013 Posted 28 January, 2013 Boruc has improved, we got Forren in, I'm pretty happy. If DPS is happy having only signed 1 player in the window and not even early, then we all should be ; )
sotonjoe Posted 28 January, 2013 Posted 28 January, 2013 Strange that we bring this Spanish manger in, but he's clearly incapable of attracting players. I must admit that I'm not impressed so far.
sfc4prem Posted 28 January, 2013 Posted 28 January, 2013 He said at his first conference that he was happy with the squad and presumably knew Forren had already signed. So I'm preetttyyyy sure that we won't be signing anyone else. I'm happy with that. Thought Jos was good against Everton, Yoshida is a fave of mine - so the defence is alright in my eyes. Maybe a bit short on the flanks up top but we've got this far with what we have, i think it may have been a case of overkill if we bought another one - unless they were head and shoulders above what we have, ie Ramírez. So yeah, I'm happy. No point buying average players for the sake of appeasing the fans, like West Ham. Very little value in January.
Dig Dig Posted 28 January, 2013 Posted 28 January, 2013 Strange that we bring this Spanish manger in, but he's clearly incapable of attracting players. I must admit that I'm not impressed so far. I agree with this, what's he really done so far aside from lose us 2 points against Everton? Not even a sniff of a transfer deadline day Jonno Quick-esq signing. Pocketino out.

scotty Posted 28 January, 2013 Posted 28 January, 2013 People keep banging on about wanting to offload Chaplow. I disagree.
SNSUN Posted 29 January, 2013 Posted 29 January, 2013 I started the window hoping we'd sign a centre back and a winger. 1 out of 2 wouldn't be bad, but I just have that feeling we'll regret not bringing in a versatile winger this week. People don't like Ramirez playing on the left, so really we have Punch, Lallana, De Ridder and Guly for the wide spots, and Lallana has been out for ages. This is a division where you need a good squad - we're one winger away from having very few relegation worries.
Barney Trubble Posted 29 January, 2013 Posted 29 January, 2013 We already have a squad that's big enough and we have players with the ability to easily enough get mid-table. It's now down to the coaching staff to make use of the talent we have and for the players to apply themselves on the pitch. We have shown we are good enough after a terrible start and as long as the players play for the new boss, then I am confident we won't even be in a relegation dogfight at the end of the season.
SaintRichmond Posted 29 January, 2013 Posted 29 January, 2013 If we wanted a manager who was ineffective in the transfer market, we might as well have kept Atkins. Or, failing that ... ADKINS
Minsk Posted 29 January, 2013 Posted 29 January, 2013 Strange that we bring this Spanish manger in, but he's clearly incapable of attracting players. I must admit that I'm not impressed so far. MP is Argentinian, not Spanish. And, on topic: I wanted us to get a CB and a wide front man in during this window. Happy with Forren (looking forward to seeing how he does tomorrow) and am still hoping we bring someone in to play out wide. Lallana coming back from injury; Guly injured; if Punch were to pick up a knock we would be very thin on the ground attacking wise. What's more, the team hasn't even scored a goal under Pinocchio so far.

alpine_saint Posted 29 January, 2013 Posted 29 January, 2013 Disappointed in lack of activity in both directions, but not surprised; not really able to gather the energy to make a big fuss about it. We have a new manager. As soon as Adkins was fired I knew that was our transfer window over. Forren went through due to the intertia related to a deal already underway. With Fonte and Lallana coming back hopefully we will be OK, but nevertheless we havent exactly taken a firm grasp on our destiny via transfer activity, though... I do wonder if we put all our eggs in one basket over Coutinho, and are left scrabbling around for a replacement. I can imagine such behaviour led to signing Gaston (target captured) and Yoshi (target not captured, Plan B). I certainly no longer beleive this baloney about us working on deals in parallel. Also highly amused that the posters, who called those annoyed at transfer behaviour in the summer "bedwetters" who should be patient for the January window, are now all claiming the squad is strong enough and they are ambivalent as to whether we get anyone else in. Only on SaintsWeb do we get such toadying sycophants....

Not so long ago you wanted a new manager, claiming Adkins was out of his depth & tactically inept. You wanted a new keeper, and Boruc sorting his life out is effectively signing a new keeper. You wanted defensive reinforcements, we have a new centre back. You also said come January we would be too far adrift to make any improvements to keep us up. How's that prediction gone for you? Do you ever get bored of being so wrong ALL THE TIME?!

But as ever, we have about 13 players able to compete at this level and if we need to call on players outside of that number, the quality doesnt exist in the squad. I suppose I am one of these suck up everything the club is shovelling types? I too have been unhappy about things the club has done. I was, and still am, extremely upset about Adkins. As we discussed previously, I felt he was a good manager, doing a good job, and would have kept us up. I still think the timing of the change was a risk, and think if that change was going to be made, the summer would have been a better time. However, I still believe there are three teams worse than us. I notice we now have 13 players good enough. Not so long ago that number was probably half of that. So at least the squad is moving in the right direction
Dig Dig Posted 29 January, 2013 Posted 29 January, 2013 At least I am consistent and just dont suck up everything the club is shovelling. So you're happy being consistently WRONG!?
saintbob40 Posted 29 January, 2013 Posted 29 January, 2013 If Morgan or Cork get injured or suspended then we have a big problem. I do not see either JWP or Davis as holding mids in a 4-2-3-1- formation.
