Galapagos Saint Posted 28 January, 2013 Share Posted 28 January, 2013 Heard the Oldham fans singing "Jose Baxter Baby" to the tune of Human League's "Dont you want me baby". I always thought this was a Saints original. Did they steal this off us...or did we get it off them (or somewhere else?). In any case, the name Fonte rhymes with "want me" alot better than Baxter! This is one of my favourite player chants...great tune as well! One of my other favourite player chants is Fulham's "Whoa Big Brede...Hangeland" to tune of Ram Jam's "Black Betty...Bam-ba-lam". Genius. Originality is key, and we've got some great chant-makers in the Northam, so more original chants please, not regurgitating the same old same old. The Kraken Posted 28 January, 2013 Share Posted 28 January, 2013 Considering we nicked it off Palace, who sung it before us when they had Fonte playing for them, I don't think we can lay any sort of claim to it.
Matthew Le God Posted 28 January, 2013 Share Posted 28 January, 2013 Heard the Oldham fans singing "Jose Baxter Baby" to the tune of Human League's "Dont you want me baby". I always thought this was a Saints original. Did they steal this off us...or did we get it off them (or somewhere else?). Crystal Palace fans used it for Jose Fonte, so not a Saints original. The Cat Posted 28 January, 2013 Share Posted 28 January, 2013 we've got some great chant-makers in the Northam We don't. In fact I'm struggling to recall any original chant we have come up with. All the songs I know have been stolen or adapted to tunes other clubs already use.
RedAndWhite91 Posted 28 January, 2013 Share Posted 28 January, 2013 Plus seeing as his name is now pronounced "Font" the quality of the song has been diminshed. The Cat Posted 28 January, 2013 Share Posted 28 January, 2013 So can we blame Palace for the fact that we've been pronouncing his name incorrectly for the last 3 years? This happens so often with foreign players in this country. Clearly it's far to much hassle for any journalist to ask a new signing how to pronounce their name when instead they can just give it their own interpretation until it eventually gets corrected. Bucks Saint Posted 28 January, 2013 Share Posted 28 January, 2013 Plus seeing as his name is now pronounced "Font" the quality of the song has been diminshed. this. it is cringeworthy, now that commentators are using the correct version, that we still sing this particular song knowing we are getting his name wrong

The Kraken Posted 28 January, 2013 Share Posted 28 January, 2013 Apparently the St. Mary's stadium announcer pronounces it "Font". So I guess that's a decent guess as to how it should be pronounced.

Tokyo-Saint Posted 28 January, 2013 Share Posted 28 January, 2013 In Portuguese - Fonte is pronounced Font-ay http://www.forvo.com/word/fonte/#gl Not... ant Posted 28 January, 2013 Share Posted 28 January, 2013 It is Fonte as in 'Font'. Apparently his wife gets quite wound up about the mis-pronunciation. To be 'Font-ay' it would need to have an acute 'e' at the end i.e. Fonté. Heard plenty of people call him 'Ho-zay' too. If he was Spanish that would be correct, but he's quite clearly not and it's pronounced 'Jo-zay'.

pap Posted 28 January, 2013 Share Posted 28 January, 2013 MLG wrong again? Don't believe it. To be fair, Football Manager doesn't say the names out loud. He doesn't NEED to know how it is pronounced, Tokyo. He could pronounce Jose's name as Throatwobbler Mangrove, for all the difference it makes. pap Posted 28 January, 2013 Share Posted 28 January, 2013 So the website I linked to has just made it up? No, the website is dealing with a word, not a surname. Pronunciation of names can be a lot different. Hell, people even pronounce my first name completely differently ( you would be surprised how many versions of "Paul" I have heard over the years and if I say it like a Sotonian does, Americans don't know wtf I am calling myself ). Andre Posted 28 January, 2013 Share Posted 28 January, 2013 As far as I've heard, it's José (Jo-zay) Fonte (Font). As for the song, who cares if we stole it off Palace? We took their player, we get their song! Also I approve of the Human League chant!

Didn't know this, I always just assumed it was 'Ko-art-ez', based on what the commentators said. Idiots. My Palace mate said today that when Tom Soares started playing for them, he heard a few commentators pronounce his name as 'soar-ez', when clearly it is just 'oars' with an S on the front...
