pangy Posted 28 January, 2013 Share Posted 28 January, 2013 Does anyone else this may be the case for Big Mo,I know we are secretive in what we do but other than Coutinho we have heard nothing on the grapevine regarding transfers, I reckon if he can lead us to safety this season he will be given a big financial backing in the summer. I don't think we will bring anyone in now

I don't think we will bring anyone in now (A) Which, after all is exactly what Adkins was doing (IMHO) (B) Which is the same position as with Adkins So, as all of the current World Class players are NOT flocking to join Saints, exactly WHAT was Cortese's real motive for ousting Adkins ?? Pocchettino faces the SAME battle against relegation as Adkins did, with the SAME players. PS. I wonder how Cortese feels about his "perfect sacking" in the Press ?? Pilchards Posted 28 January, 2013 Share Posted 28 January, 2013 Window is not shut yet. Just saying Exactly, if MP wanted a winger because he likes to get the ball out wide quickly (according to some players in Barca) then we need a left footer. Also I reckon we lack a game changer on the bench.

Also I reckon we lack a game changer on the bench. Agree, but I believe/hope MP can find a way to use Mayuka much better. Adkins apparently never trusted him enough to play him and I can understand that in a way. Often young african players can be a bit immature in their game and when the score in the game is tight you might not trust him.....BUT to not put him on away against Liverpool when we were trailing was very very strange to me.... I don't think we will bring anyone in now few of us can claim that " we know what will happen " by the end of the season (even those on here who have put their crystal balls in for polishing) but one thing is clear.that the "real " responsibility lies not just in the managers tactics, but in the performance of the players on the day.... (there must be some wringing of hands today at; Carrow Road, Anfield and White Hart Lane). Lawrie McMenemy once quoted as saying .as a manager you can never win. If we get the points, fans say ..the team played well. If we lose ..it's my fault because I picked them. Many of us have already acknowledged (in print)... the success that Nigel Adkins brought to the club in recent seasons, but now he's gone - and we must move on. If the new manager succeeds....what will his critics say then?... it was just luck... (let's face it we're overdue some).....or he's only playing Adkins' side...or will he gain some credit for his own efforts?... or are they just waiting for him (and the team) to fail... just so they can gloat and say ..we knew it was wrong all the time. We'll have a clearer picture by May 20th...but I'm also old enough to recall another manager... who took over a side around New Year, and the team plummeted down the League.... to relegation. He kept his job ...and went onto to build an FA Cup winning side and eventually promotion back up again....and gave us some of the most-entertaining football in living memory ...Lawrie McMenemy. Andre Posted 28 January, 2013 Share Posted 28 January, 2013 What does the name of this thread have to do with transfers? I thought it was gonna be something about relegation with Adkins or survival with Pochettino, in which case I was going to say you were stupid. We don't need any more players, let's get on with the season and flourish.

I think you've misunderstood me, what I meant was the thread title -- "Survive and be backed or get relegated and be sacked??" -- is misleading, seeing as it seems to be about transfers. david in sweden Posted 28 January, 2013 Share Posted 28 January, 2013 Who says we don't have anyone lined up? Because its not widely reported in the media? ABSOLUTELY.....it's not the Cortese style to go out and do the deals in the media ... " Redknapp style " . NC waits till the ink is dry on the contract. We may still be in for a surprise signing that no-one has considered.
shurlock Posted 28 January, 2013 Share Posted 28 January, 2013 We were in for Coutinho, we weren't doing it for a laugh. We're seriously after a winger/AM imo. What the next few days will test is whether we have a plan B. The criticism is that we get so bogged down in deals that we are unable to pursue other option. We'll soon find out if that's the case. trousers Posted 28 January, 2013 Share Posted 28 January, 2013 We were in for Coutinho, we weren't doing it for a laugh. One report I read last week (can't recall which newspaper) said that Saints had made enquiries last summer but hadn't rekindled that interest during this transfer window. Makes you wonder if it was agents/Inter Milan exploiting our previous interest by drip feeding false new bids to the media. I don't see any tangible evidence that we made a bid in this window. Indeed, the fact that they seem to have accepted significantly less from Liverpool backs this theory up somewhat.

Tancredi, the italian journo who is clearly ITK on stuff like this....says we had 2 bids rejected..and also said the other night that liverpool will offer a new bid which will give the most upfront (which they now have)...he also said Inter will give us till end of today to make another offer... Tancredi also said that the player would go for the liverpool move

I've quoted that many times.....agents have a job to do (and a living to make) and often seem to employ such tactics to get " the best deal for themselves " (if not always for the player). VectisSaint Posted 28 January, 2013 Share Posted 28 January, 2013 People seem to forget we already made one signing in the area most felt we needed, Poor Forren has been largely overlooked with the timing of his signing. I still think we will see one more in at least by Thursday, in midfield, and wouldn't be surprised to see a striker. Seems quite clear that we have been working the market, even if only Coutinho resulted in a bid that is in the public domain. At the end of the day though it is a fine balance bringing in new payers at end of January, at best thay have 14 games before the end of the season, you need to be pretty damn sure that they will have an impact AND that we will stay up to invest much at this time of the year. Yep, not doubting his 'sources' are genuine...just pondering whether, sometimes, his source might feed him misleading information to spin a story one way or the other...? In other words, when his source tells him "we've had two bids from Southampton" how does he know whether that is actually the case or not? Just because the information he's given 99% of the time turns out to be right doesn't mean that he won't be fed misleading information the other 1% of the time. Indeed, the fact that he's a reliable source 99% of the time makes him an ideal conduit for the odd snippet of misleading info every now and then. Anyway, probably me thinking too hard again... Doctoroncall Posted 28 January, 2013 Share Posted 28 January, 2013 I'm not sure that there will be a huge amount spent in the summer especially if MP can get a couple of the decent Espanyol players that are free at the end of the season. A couple of aspects he was brought in to do was - work with the current squad and improve them; and integrate the youth players into the team so, much will depend of the deficencies he finds to possible transfer targets.
