Players you forgot played for us

Have a printed signed squad sheet/photo thing from 1999/2000... Who are S Bradley, C Collins, B Leal?!

Bruno Leal, brother of Boa Morte (apparently) ;)

Now that article brought up another player, I'd forgotten about: Dani Rodrigues. Maybe he's been mentioned earlier in this thread, but only now I remember the story about us snapping him up in front of AFCB - and then he went on and got a bad injury...

Didn't he suffer two broken legs in the space of 2 or 3 years, which effectively ruined him?

Ah yes, that's how it went...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dani_Rodrigues

In an act of "un-neighbourly piracy",[1] Southampton nipped in and signed Rodrigues from Feirense for £200,000. He made two substitute appearances at the end of the 1999–00 season, against Leicester City[2] and Wimbledon.[3]

Rodrigues showed promise and, when he went on loan to Bristol City at the end of 2000, he was an instant hit, but he broke an ankle in a match against Reading. He returned to the Saints and was fighting his way back to full fitness when he broke the same ankle in training.[1]

In an effort to rebuild his career, Rodrigues spent another spell on loan to Bristol City. Southampton released him from his contract in July 2002 and he was signed by Walsall on a free transfer.[1]

My next door neighbour took me to a reserve game at the Dell around that time (at least I think it was a reserve game? There was a bit of a crowd there?!), I must have been about 8, we expected Boa Morte to make an appearance. There was someone warming up on the wing, I thought it was Boa Morte, then a few people were chanting "Bruno! Bruno! Bruno!" at him... To this day I always wondered who "Bruno" was... Now I know, thanks!

We signed a Dale Stephens from Oldham at the end of our league 1 promotion campaign, why some even told me he was the real deal, better than Morgan and should be signed up instantly.

That's the one. No wonder I couldn't remember his surname if the "current player" I was thinking of was Jack Stephens. :D

99% sure we only signed O'Halloran to promote the Under 21 match at St Marys between England and Ireland.

Which seems strange and a little unlikely, as Surman was named in the England squad along with Theo Walcott, who would have been a much bigger draw.

I've also just noticed that in January we had Gregory Vignal or Wayne Thomas playing at left back, and neither exactly pulled up any trees with Vignal in particular taking an age to get half-competent, so it probably made sense to try getting someone different in.

Has anyone mentioned Kevin Miller yet ?

I'd also like to throw Lee Powell into the mix, seeing as I played against him in school and his dad played for Newport County. He's on the squad pic for 1991/2 but I'm not sure he ever got a league game for Saints in Div 1 and disappeared to Hibs reserves not long after. Absolutely rapid midget winger with blonde hair, in our schools game he just ran up and down the wing beating people waiting for their striker to get free in the box.

Shayne Bradley as I previously mentioned got a start up at Everton, he was like a broader, slower James Beattie before he got good.

On the marketing for it, they had Surman in a England shirt and O'Halloran in an Ireland shirt.

I think anyway.

Excellent call!

He came on as sub at home to Arsenal for his debut, and got utterly done by Thierry Henry, who scored his first goal for Arsenal that day after weeks of not looking like he was any good. I vividly recall Arsenal's bench warming up at half time being rather good (Luzhny aside) and Ray Parlour nearly taking Pat From Poole's head off with a shot that deflected off the bar into the Archers bike shed.

He most definately did get a few games the9, I remember him playing v Forest at home and he caused them a lot of problems. He was exactly as you remember him, he beat four Forest players in the corner with a bit of skill that had the Saints fans roaring with approval. A bit like with Neal Bartlett, I'm not quite sure why he didn't last longer.

Talking of rapid wingers that probably needed to improve their end product, do people remember Andy Williams and Neal Heaney? Williams was a taller version of Powell but almost as quick with just as many tricks. I remember him being our best player V Bolton on a dire opening day in 97/98 - Dave Jones's first game - and giving Chelsea the runaround as a sub. Heaney was the quickest of the three, I mean really quick but his delivery was terrible and frequently threatened the fans behind each goal. He was linked with Blackburn at one stage for big money but ended up following Bally to City when they were relegated and then to Darlington. Williams went to Swindon and was winning MOTM awards and then vanished again, I'll ask my Swindon supporting mate what happened.

If you want to see ex-Saints, go to Exeter, Tisdale has a few like Aaron Davies and Matt Oakley. Saw Ollie Lancashire for Aldershot v Torquay at Plainmoor on a Tuesday night earlier this season. No wonder Aldershot are struggling with him at CB! Aldershot were 3-0 up and lost 4-3 in the last minute which pleased the locals no end. He certainly hasn't improved. What's happened to Lloyd James?

I remember him having a truly great game at Coventry.

He was utter shart for us for about 2 months (I started a Facebook cartoon on some app detailing a variety of hilarious ways he could be miles apart from Chris Makin) then bizarrely got quite good (relatively) just before his loan ended and had people actually keen to keep him. Was at Cheltenham last I heard.

Has anyone else mentioned Mark Hughes? Maybe it's just me who had managed to erase that awful memory. One of the most disinterested, 'only here for the pay cheque' players I can remember. Maybe I was expecting too much but he was such a disappointment.
Mark Hughes never played for Saints. He wore the shirt; he took the money but he definitely never played.
