Players you forgot played for us

Andy Townsend and Alan Shearer, can't ever remember them mentioning that they once played for us when they talk on the telly. Perhaps i have missed the fact.

I remember Townsend engineered a move from us by deliberately playing sh*te, after we'd lifted him out of non-league at Weymouth. Don't watch much TV but you're right, it's never mentioned.

Alf Ramsey. Not sure if Hoddle would count though? He became Saints boss after England!

ANSWER: to Q. Three England managers who were signed as players by Saints.....

(not Hoddle of course,) who managed both England..and Saints, but never played for SFC.

Kevin Keegan

Alf Ramsey

AND a 16 year old who was signed as an amateur in 1949, but never made the first team named ..Bobby (later Sir) Robson. He later moved to Fulham and made some sort of a name for himself....

I think Andy might feel a bit peeved when contemplating his career with us. Having been bought by Lawrie McMenemy in 1984 for a bargain 35K from Weymouth, he began playing at left back.

Tragedy came when he broke his leg in a pre-season friendly - against his old club - and was out for a whole season. Returning to the side (then managed by Chris Nicholl) he started playing on the right wing - occasionally on his favoured left side. He played a whole season in 87/88, but then found himself being shipped out to Norwich for £300K. after less than 100 games, and was replaced by a young Rod Wallace who was beginning to make his mark.

Nicholl must have felt pleased with the profit, but would soon regret the decision when AT moved onto Chelsea for a £1million+fee. and started a fine career that included collecting the first of his 70 Republic of Ireland caps. Even after glory days at Chelsea, he moved on to good days at Villa, Middlesbrough and WBA before finally quitting the game.

I don't know if he " engineered his move ", but Nicholl was keen to bring in the young striker (Wallace), and AT didn't seem to be in his plans. Considering the midfield problems we had in the following years it might have been a better decsion to have kept him. Certainly his career much far more successful than anyone could have imagined at the time and far better than his successor (Wallace).

I have just remembered Frankie Bennett, a waiter turned football player. He crushed , our then Prime Minister, John Major's hopes of a Chelsea victory when he visited the dell one year :)

I remember getting Frankie's autograph at Staplewood. I was still at school and taller than him!

Just seeing his name here, Lloyd James....bloody hell yeah......I remeber a lot of people used to come on here and defend him, cant think why.

Another one of our "defenders that cannot defend" brigade we have endured over the years.

Where is he now ? Still warming Colchester's bench or has he slipped lower than that as well ?
