Where does this leave January Transfers?

Wouldn't be surprised if we didn't bring in anyone, although I do think we could to with another midfielder/attacker. Behind Gaston/Punch/Lallana/Guly, there is not a lot, and we have very little impact off the bench. Unless he knows something about Mayuka which we haven't seen yet....

Agree with this, but I think as others have mentioned if we could bring in someone of genuine high quality better than what we have then we would have (i.e. Countinho) but don't need anyone in a rush. As I said in the other thread -

The improved form of Boruc, the emergence of Shaw and the return of Cork have quashed the need for major reinforcements in those areas and the addition of Forren brings further defensive options.

A first team of -

Boruc, Shaw, Clyne, Forren, Yoshida, Cork, Morgan, Lallana, Gaston, Puncheon, Lambert is good enough to stay in the league.

You never know anyway, Cortese could be up to stuff behind the scenes, the club never confirm a transfer until it's done, there may still be surprise signing in store.

I think I would rather not panic in January and get some proper quality in the summer. We have aquired several players in January windows that smack of panic buy rather than full quality. Feels we should be identifying targets for the summer based on second half of the season and being prepared as we'll know way ahead of time what we will need and who is coming up from the youth. Obivious I know!

It all depends if the club want to be protagonists in the market or not. If they have a need they can proactively go out and try to sign targets. On the other hand we've spent lots and lots and time and effort on developing a network of contacts throughout Europe and the rest of the world so an opportunity may arise to do something as the club are informed of something or even approached by an agent. I suspect we're always open to sign players but at this moment in time not proactively looking to address a gap in the team.

There goes the idea that Adkins was sacked to attract more exciting foreign players... I guess Guly, De Ridder and Hooiveld are actually good enough. I always knew Guly was a genius. I'm just out to buy my ADIDAS Do Prado's from their new range of boots.

i think guly and hooiveld have both proven they are adequate cover in the recent weeks to be fair. Lallana back and De Ridder is third choice to get a go on the left hand side.

It was suggested on another thread that because Guly is apparently injured Shaw could push up to left wing and Fox replace him at left back. I'd love to see Shaw play a more attacking role, the boy is class

Most Saints fans apprehensions and desire for the start of the January transfer window opening were born from our rubbish start to the season and form in September/October/November. We looked at the Jan window as some kind of last-chance to salvage the season by splashing the cash.

The more we got trounced the higher the number of players we needed.

As you will recall after c.10 games the consensus was we needed two goalkeepers, two centrebacks, a left back, a winger and a holding midfielder. And possibly another striker.

The last 12-14 matches is a different story. Based upon THAT form we DON'T need ANY goalkeepers ( Boruc is a starter and Davies is back up), we got one CB (Forren) and we DON'T need another (cos Maya, Jose and Jos have improved), We DON'T need a left back (cos Shaw has emerged and fox is his back up), We DON'T need another holding Midfielder(cos Cork is back from injury and Davies is back up) and frankly between Mayuka SDR and Tadanari Lee we have wing play options, pace and goal-scoring potential a plenty - albeit unfulfilled.

The position we are exposed in is, to me, creative attacking midfield / inside forward (for old timers) and an absolute like for like replacement should SRL get injured. For the first i can see why we are looking at coutinho/zarate types - if Ads stays injured for much longer and Ramirez only lasts 75 minutes we are struggling..For the second- its very obvious but it strikes me if rickie gets injured we may also struggle somewhat as none of the others can do exactly what he does. I'd say Jrod would get first dibs but then we might need to change system if it did not work and we'd look a bit impotent up front.

So it leaves us looking for a creative flair player for me and possibly a striker. Dark horse is an upgraded holding mf instead of Davies.

I'd go the other way round personally, Fox has a good cross on him and enough experience to play the Marsden role of letting Shaw fly past and do the attacking. Personally as good as he is i'm not convinced Shaw has the maturity yet to play that covering role (but i'm utterly sure it will come with time).

I see what you mean, I guess I'm blinded by the ideal of him pinging in lots of brilliant deliveries from the wide position for Rickie to get his head on!

If we stick from here on in, I think de Ridder and Chaplow will play their roles for the run in.

You never know what a bit of better coaching might do for them. Or a different game plan. We'll just have to wait and see.

Didn't someone somewhere say something about our coaching being "stale".

I think we'll finish mid table and may even nick a top half finish. Will be very interesting to see how we approach the game against utd

Since when was Guly injured?

...might have been in training ?........

we don't usually get feedback whenever someone stubs their toe - do we?... but knocks and kicks are part of the job.

Hopefully he won't be out for too long. I'm still waiting for his next goal, but I have noticed his improved work rate in recentn games.......

I've written it off anyway, Saturday is far more important. As long as we can get AL a bit of a run-out at Old Trafford and have him

fit for Saturday that's OK, no other injuries either. Still I guess the players and management won't see it that way. They'll want to

win, but we probably won't. I noticed on the Poll on the OS only about 30% see us losing.

I just hope the present squad are good enough to stay up - I still think we need more pace and goal-scoring ability up front as J-Rod does not seem to be delivering and poor old De Ridder is almost the opposite of an impact player coming off the bench.
