jayrivers Posted 22 January, 2013 Share Posted 22 January, 2013 I'm not sure if/where this has been mentioned before, so feel free to point me in the right direction... With the squad off for a few days, and a new manager, do people think we will be signing anyone else in this window? Pochettino said that new players are necessarily needed. Maybe it was in the press conference? I can see a situation where we have a new CB and that could be it, especially if Cortese thinks we were underacheiving with the squad we had? What are other peoples thoughts on this. Just to note I would love us to strengthen, especially with a new creative/attacking/wide midfielder. As I feel we lack any depth there at all. With just 15 games left this season I really don't see the point in signing players we don't need. Lallana will be back soon, that gives us an advanced midfield trio of Gaston, Lallana and Punch with Guly to back them up. We're about right everywhere else. Saint_clark Posted 22 January, 2013 Share Posted 22 January, 2013 I still think we need another winger as cover. De Ridder rarely creates anything, he flatters to deceive (as has always been his problem).
pap Posted 22 January, 2013 Share Posted 22 January, 2013 Think we are going to get between 3 and 6. Saint Garrett Posted 22 January, 2013 Share Posted 22 January, 2013 Depending on how close Lallana is and how much we're going to risk his fitness, I wouldn't be surprised if we don't bring anyone else in. With Mayuka also back within the next few weeks, it's not like we dont have any options.
pingwing Posted 22 January, 2013 Share Posted 22 January, 2013 Would rather sign up Tim Howard than Butland at the moment. LB and a RW are the only real players on the shopping list right now.
Greenridge Posted 22 January, 2013 Share Posted 22 January, 2013 I see we're again being linked with Biglia so maybe this is on the cards. The Coutinho deal is very quiet with him saying he wants to stay and I guess the Astori was an either / or situation with Forren so that would appear unlikely. Boruc is looking like he may be a good solution in the problematic goalie spot so I can't see us doing anything there in the short-term either. jayrivers Posted 22 January, 2013 Author Share Posted 22 January, 2013 I'm getting the impression it could be a case of waiting to the summer when some real work can be done rather than panicing? Personally I think LB is ok for now with Fox as cover as we don't really want someone to replace Shaw. And there is this other nipper in the youth team who they say will be as good as Shaw? Saint Charlie Posted 22 January, 2013 Share Posted 22 January, 2013 Def need another attacking midfield option. De Ridder is hopeless and Guly for his effort doesnt create or take any chances. The season is so important, we need a little more cover in these areas and to provide spark from the bench.

Biglia is being linked all over the place, heard that Anderlecht are offering him to Inter. Anderlect want 10 million euros, Biglia, who wants to leave, thinks that it's excessive and has thrown a strop and gone back to Argentina recently complaining of migraines for which he has a sick-note. Anderlecht even sent a doctor and a bailiff to ascertain the truth. He should have been back at Anderlecht yesterday anyway because his sick note ran out on Sunday. He's trying to drive down the price and Anderlecht aren't having any of it for now.

We really dont need more than that right now Butland would be a good addition but hardly essential before the Summer. A better wing option to bring on than De Ridder would be good but the only area I think we really need to strengthen is RIGHT back. If Clyne gets injured we are left relying on Richardson (not good) or moving Cork or Yoshida (not good at all - they are both decent full-backs but it weakens us elsewhere). .comsaint Posted 22 January, 2013 Share Posted 22 January, 2013 Would love to see Astori alongside Forren as our eventual CB duo. Not sure whether or not the Astori interest is still there? Perhaps in the summer? He said after sunday's game he'd think about a move in january if a "concrete offer" came in for him. I think those two would be terrific. RobM Posted 22 January, 2013 Share Posted 22 January, 2013 Now we've signed Forren, I'm less convinced with every game we play that we need signings this window. In the summer we do, no doubt about it, we need cover on the wings and in each fullback position. But in Jan, where time is limited, the team is in full-flow and doing better with each game and as individuals players are improving, I'm less convinced. Just a few weeks ago I would have said GK was a priority as I didn't trust Boruc, but he has improved to such an extent I'm not concerned now. Guly has proven he can do a job in cover and SDR offers little, but at least allows us to bring other players off with 15-20mins to spare as an alternative option - he doesn't do much right, but he doesn't do much wrong either. For me, this season is consolidation and I think we have enough to stay in the Prem. Next season is aiming for a top-10 finish, so we'll need to improve in some areas. That's more of a concern than this window.

What happens with the old squad rule, would this mean we have to ship 6 players out also from the ole 25 man squad thing? means you'd have to take the dead wood out of the official EPL squad that's all. Butterfield, De Ridder, Lee even. We already have 1 space I think because Dickson and Seaborne were part of the original 25 because of EPL rules. Brussels Saint Posted 22 January, 2013 Share Posted 22 January, 2013 For me it's a 3rd defensive midfielder of better or similar standard to compete with Morgan and Cork. Beyond those 2, we have no other DM's at the club and its fair to say our improvement started when we had 2 proper defensive midfielders in the starting 11. We need someone that will put it in the back of the net. I'm less convinced. I'd agree if we could get in someone with proven quality, somebody who has done it over and over again at this level, who could drop right into the team. But they're rare, especially for semi-sensible money in Jan, so it's going to be hard to find somebody a step-up from what we already have. We create chances, have good attempts on goal, we're just not clinical enough. That will come I'm sure, especially for players like JRod who have age and time on their side. It does allow a clean break, and letting your head rule the decision, probably the right thing to do. Realistically, are these boys ever going to grace the first team again? I don't even think the likes of Fox are safe. Basically, anyone that isn't first choice the first team or likely to get into the first team will be moved on. They might not all go this window, but they will go - and will be replaced.

AussieDog Posted 23 January, 2013 Share Posted 23 January, 2013 Realistically there must be at least 10 players who need to be moved on (that includes those out on loan too), but you never know when the next injury crisis is around the corner so I don't really expect many to leave this window. Maybe a 3-4 out and a few loans amongst the younger ones. Of the current 16 that appear in the team or on the bench, then DeRidder, Fox, Hooiveld & Guly must be the most vulnerable to slipping down the pecking order. I'd be amazed if we got rid of Lambert - especially to a relegation rival - unless we had a massive replacement lined up for him, and that would be a real gamble.
