Lawrie Mac on Talksport

He was on Solent yesterday and was disrespectful to MP just because he has never heard of him. Three years Management in La Liga is not to be sniffed at.

"It's not as if they have brought [Jose] Mourinho or [Pep] Guardiola in," 76-year-old McMenemy told BBC Sport.

"They have brought in a chap, with due respect he might be a nice man and a very good coach, but who nobody has heard of. It is a terrific risk."

He said this:

"We don't know anything about the man coming in," he said. "We don't know what reaction the players will have.

Then immediately contradicted himself:

"The players will give everything. There is not doubt about that

Ok then. Maybe Paul Jewell would have been better because you know him?

And some people say he was our best ever manager (Que MLG with the stats to show he was). He really is a dinosaur and managed in the era of Big Ron, causal racism, smoky back rooms and back handers. He wouldn't last 10 minutes in the modern game, Adkins was far superior.

Wrath of the crusties coming your way mate.

Dont talk rubbish man.

I suppose Bobby Moore would get skinned nowadays, or Stan Matthews would be behind Steve De Ridder in the pecking order.

Ted and Larwie are head and shoulders above any other manager we've ever had....Fact

We has a fantastic manager for us, no doubt but the game has moved on & he hasn't.

Sounds like old guy struggling to keep up.

Saying had a translator in technical box every time needed to talk to a player???!! Not how I saw it. Spoke to players one to one. Alone in tech area every time I looked. NA often had Crosby with him.

Saying mp got sack in November then got appointed then!

Any sacking of NA would be wrong.

None of squad played in premier league before.

NC wrong to win higher than 4th from bottom!

There is real snobbery in the old football crowd.

I am still not convinced we have improved manager, hope we have.

Not happy with way it was done.

But you cannot argue that NC is trying to improve the club and is willing to take tough decisions.

Starting to think there is chance we will look back on this as same principal of likes of dean Hammond, good bloke, did great job, continually looking to improve.

Is it a fact or is it your opinion? The game was simpler back then, less sports science, motivation has moved on from drinks together if we win, the pressures are greater, press attention is far greater, you can't just play 44fecking2 any more etc. That's not to say NA may not have struggled a bit in the 'good old days'. Back then, you probably had to be more a leader of men. I can't see Nigel out drinking many of the team.

I agree with this.

That doesn't mean his achievements should be forgotten, and people come out with rubbish.

I don't think anybody has forgotten his achievements. He still remains the only manager to have won us a major trophy, that status won't change for some time.

However, many of his opinions are massively outdated and as a result are largely irrelevant, IMO.

Talksport really is dire though.

The presenters are terrible, chatter even worse, guests moronic.

The only good things are the Selco adverts (its where the trade go) and dare I say it Stan Collymore who actually does some research.

I'm on the go from job to job, I quote, I work, not time to stop, biut there's one place I go for stock.

Get it straight from Selco.

So let's just get it straight, they're this busy tradesman's mate, they're not just good they're flaming great!

I hardly ever listen to Talksport.

IMO too. I'll always have respect for everything he has done for this club, that won't and shouldn't ever change. But he needs to shut up sometimes, his views are indeed outdated, unwelcome and unhelpful. Rather than try and stay relevant and important, he should be supportive of what the club is trying to do.

Or have a different opinion from you.

They were different eras of the game. Apart from the 11 players and the ball, almost everything else is different. The change is not as great as the change in rugby but it is close. The player are the best from around the world now, not just around the country. The game is an international one, managers need to be motivators, tacticians, have a broad knowledge of football from around the world, sports scientists, at least a base knowledge of human biology, physiology, handle overpaid teenagers, over hyped players, huge egos bloated by 24 hour sports news, the big clubs are bigger, richer and have larger squads, the gulf between the teams has hugely increased etc etc

I think Lawrie would struggle if he were a manager now. Therefore despite LM's achievements, for me NA is a better manager.

Lawrie Mac has managed to forget that when he was appointed no onehad heard of him, he was from Grimsby (I think) and his only job had been failure at Doncaster, if my distant memory is correct. He is from another age

As I recollect there were many well known managers out of work when Lawrie was brought in (as manager designate to Ted who had retired to all intents and purposes). He was a Guardsman and not really a top footballer (Blyth Spartans I think he played for) his only decent management experience was Grimsby! and he probably also needed an interpretor in his early days as no one understood Geordie in those pre Ant and Dec days!

He immediately fell out with the senior players and moved a few on (Paine et al), , he managed to get us relegated in his first season from a secure and safe position of 6th at Christmas in 73/74 before he finally settled built a team won the Cup and gained promotion back again. So Pots and Kettles do come to mind!

Apart from winning the FA cup, getting to the League cup final, finishing runners up, signing the worlds best keeper, signing the European footballer of the year, bringing on youngsters and qualifying for Europe 3/4 times, what did Lawrie do for the club.
he left us for Sunderland and we were left in limbo.
