Is this all about the 'global brand'?

Noticed an advertisement on the big screens last night about sponsering in St Mary's to get global recognition.

Made me think about our squad...

Argentinian manager + backroom staff + keeper

Polish keeper

Dutch defender

Norweigen defender

Japanese defender + forward

Portugese defender

Scottish defender

French midfielder

Northern Irish midfielder

Uruguayan midfielder

Belgian winger

Brazilian midfielder

Zambian forward

That is a lot of different nationalities and wouldn't be surprised if it's the most in the league. It's not a bad thing by any means, but It made me think with the kit 'doing a cardiff' is there an arguement that this is for the global brand of Southampton.

Wouldn't be surprised to see an Italian and a Spanish player come in over the next week or so...

That's exactly what its all about. From the Japanese signings, adverts and twitter account, through to change in Programme sellers and management team, the new black and white badge.

Did anyone also see that one set of our advertising boards are in Chinese/Japanese (apologies for ignorance). I can assume that has been included specifically for our (attempted) growth in the far Eastern market.

Anyone know what they translate to?

They're in both Chinese and Japanese and I believe they are for a betting website. The same ads are at most Prem grounds and some Championship grounds this season.

It's all part of NC's plan FFS are you the ONLY fan who hasn't been mailed a copy of it?.

He had to close down the Ford Plant so he could expand the runway at Eastleigh so that Emirates could fly 10 A380's in every match day to fill our 75,000 seater stadium in Jacksons Farm.

We've already HAD this discussion

For all the international players we have, the Opta stats in the (NA free) programme last night state 21 of our goals have been scored by Englishmen, 5 more than any other Premiership club

Don't get me wrong, we have some fantastic English players who are a very important part in our side. Shaw, Clyne, Lallana, Cork, Lambert, Puncheon are all good players at this level, and no doubt a few of them will represent England at some stage of their career. Seem to me - bring in some very good young English players with good natural ability (unlike the big quick ones which seems to be the norm in other clubs) and then fill the rest of the side with gifted foreigners to boost our globsl image.

But surely no different to most other football teams these days?

Nope. We invented buying foreign players. Just like we invented performance related pay, and we invented developing young players.

We lead, others follow.

We may not have invented it, but Ivan Golac was certainly one of the first. Bert Trautmann was already in England as he was a POW and Man City did not buy him, Max Seeburg played for Spurs in the 1900s and Bill Perry from South Africa played for Blackpool in the Matthews Final, but 1978 saw Golac join Ossie Ardiles and a handful of others as one of the first true foreign players to play in the English 1st Division.

Maybe not, we just seem to be getting them from all over the world and with the kit change and the ambition of the club, I would say there's probably something in this.

Last season we fielded more British players in our matchday squad than most of the rest of the league.

So if cosmopolitan signings are the plan for world domination, our plan is going worse than almost every other club in the division.
