Man Utd Away Build Up

People said that when we played villa/qpr/reading/sunderland/villa...

Well all 3 pointers are big fo sho, but with Wigan currently 4 points behind us, a gap of 7 compared to a gap of 1 would be sweeeeeeet. In addition, they're one of those annoying teams that are good at a relegation scrap. To get Pochettino his first win at the DW (assuming we don't beat United) would also be massive for confidence for us fans too.

If no new signings, and Lallana is fit, I'd go with this....

Boruc

Clyne - Yoshida - Forren - Shaw

Cork - Schneiderlin

Puncheon - Ramirez - Lallana

Lambert

Subs: K Davis, Fox, Hooiveld, JWP, Chaplow, Rodriguez, Guly, Reeves

Some sense at last... starting with the team that played Chelsea is a recipe for disaster. It did not work as Chelsea should have been out of sight by the time Lambert arrived... we were lucky.

Not sure your sums are making sense? If we beat Utd and then lose to Wigan (your original post) that gap stays at 4 points, both us and Wigan gaining 3 pts? If we lose both games Wigan will cut the gap to 1 point (ignoring their other game). We could get to at least 7 clear of Wigan if we beat them (plus anything we get from Utd, minus anything they get from their extra game).

I think what you're trying to say is let's get what we can from the Utd game and then win at Wigan, that will then open a decent-ish gap over Wigan in the table; it's a sound plan but too many variables to quantify the actual points difference me thinks.

No silly reactions to a big defeat I hope. They have their weaknesses but they're still good enough to destroy most teams on their day. Depends if their finishing boots are on but could easily be 4+. Just a bonus game really. Surprise draws and great performances are positive, but lets be honest, losing at Chelsea then beating Everton is better. Strange really, as the draws do point to a more consistent stronger side and we are no doubt improving, but points win prizes/safety.

Of course there will be silly reactions when the big defeat happens. There would have been if NA was still here and even more so now.

I'm going to this one, as my company have a box at Old Trafford and seems churlish to not take a seat from some client who is probably only there for the free booze.

United always lose to one semi crap team at home per season, so I'm hoping we have been suitably inspired by our Barca holiday (sorry training camp) or more importantly they underestimate quite how good we are.

Ramirez to score a worldy........he's due? 3-1 United.

Btw I fully intend to take a Jason Puncheon during the game, as is always derigeur on such occasions. I imagine the toilet seat has a Bobby Charlton style comb over novelty cover.

Would that lot on your bench turn arounda 2-0 defecit or win us a level match at one of the toughest grounds in the league? Of course they wouldn't. This is a 90 minute game and we'd only see the best of that front 4 for about 65. If they brought Scholes, Giggs and Nani off the bench, they'd just cut us up late on like they did last time and the time before that. The long game is worth getting used to, because it's capable of winning these games that we really have no right to win.

Boruc

Clyne Yoshida Forren Shaw

Cork Schneiderlin

Puncheon JWP Guly

Rodriguez

Bench: Davis, Fox, Hooiveld, Chaplow, SDR, Lambert, Ramirez, Davis

Same tactics as Chelsea, need the energy to close down Man U in early periods, with Lambert and Ramirez coming on off as impact subs. Have a funny feeling that Rodriguez will have the game of his life at Old Trafford, his boyhood club

Why would Ward-Prowse start?

*Fonte if fit.

  • Like to see us play a high line for this one - Rooney and Van Persie are notorious for being caught offside far too often.

  • Early ball over the top or through the middle to Puncheon or Coutinho to relieve the pressure.

  • No hoofball.

  • Clyne and Shaw to curb their attacking instincts - they have fast, dangerous wingers.

  • When they receive the ball, Puncheon and Coutinho either get as close to the byline as possible (if the channels are empty) and pop one onto Rickie's head, OR play it square (if the middle is empty) to the onrushing Lallana and/or Ramirez (using Lambert as a decoy) and build from the centre (or have a crack from distance).

  • Morgan to rarely, if ever, cross the halfway line; and basically make Kagawa non-existent.

  • If we're not chasing the game after 70 minutes bring on Cork in place of either Lallana or Ramirez to do what he does best. :)

  • If we're still not chasing the game after 80 minutes throw on Jayrod as poor Rickie would have to be knackered by then. :(

Laugh all you like but I can see us nicking this one...

that team would let in so many goals

Agreed. Far too little protection for the defenders from players it simply doesn't come natural to. Morgan and Cork together have worked tirelessly across the midfield to close down and break down attacks, it would be foolish to break this up IMO... especially since Man Utd are weakest in the middle of the park. If we can control them there we stand a chance.

Seems little in the way of Pub info anywhere - any top tips?

Drink in town and get the metrolink to OT??? Not much around the ground other than the Trafford and that gets rammed and is a home pub anyway.

Home game for me this. I'll be taking my son but sitting in the Man U stands. Wigan a few days later should be a belter as I am with my own!

0 pts at OT and 3 pts at Wigan will do me nicely thankyou very much.

Yes, the introduction of those three substitutes won United the match when we played them last, but the circumstances are much different now, if you look at the players involved and the timing and players who were our substitutes.

K Davis, J Hooiveld , D Fox, J Fonte, N Clyne, J Ward-Prowse, S Davis, J Puncheon (E Mayuka, 75), A Lallana (J Rodriguez, 79), M Schneiderlin, R Lambert (G Do Prado, 75)

Personally I would say that we have a much stronger squad than we had then. Even if Lallana isn't playing, we didn't have Ramirez playing then. Thankfully the woeful Fox is now replaced with the impressive Luke Shaw. Probably the most influential change though, is the addition of a fit Cork, in partnership with Schneiderlin. Although Fonte is still out, we now have Yoshida doing a decent job in defence. In fact the defence we have now, even with Fonte out, is is a lot more solid than it was then. As well as all that, Puncheon is much improved and arguably Boruc is now the stronger choice than Davis.

Personally I would welcome the similar match to the last one, with us ahead until the last 10 minutes. The arrival of Scholes, Giggs and Nani would be snuffed out by Cork and Schneiderlin this time. The biggest mistake we made that day was allowing Scholes the space to put in the killer balls into our box. We wouldn't make that mistake twice. In any event, those late goals of theirs had strong elements of them being flukes, what with deflections and miscued clearances.

Our best hope is to employ the tactics for which Pochettino has a reputation for; playing a high line and pressing them hard, keeping possession of the ball and not letting them settle. The worry is that a high line might allow Van Persie to run onto balls hit over us, but thankfully players like Clyne and Shaw have pace. Discipline in the offside trap will be key.

I'd be happy if we scored, would be delighted with a point. Fingers crossed that Lallana will be fit enough for the bench and then a start against Wigan.

I still maintain my point though. Morgan, Davis and JWP wouldn't have given Scholes the tme of day had they been running on fresh legs. Our players are fit, but someone who has been busting a gut for 70 minutes isn't going to match up with someone who is fresh on. The ony way round it is to plan for it. In my book, that means making some sacrifices to the starting 11 so we can finish the game strongly.

That seemed to be Adkins login in dropping Lambert for the Man City game - let Guly run and run all game, bring on Ricke later on. I think we're fitter now though, plus wiser, but by all accounts MP wants to play a pressing, high-tempo game and really go at the opposition, so it'll be interesting to see how we cope.

Against Utd, the difference IMO was bringing Scholes on, rather than our subs. Scholes gave Utd exactly what they were missing all game, he bossed things from midfield when we were knackered.

Agree, really can't see us getting anything against United but obviously Wigan is a massive game which we have to win. Anything against United is a bonus. Still, looking forward to going to both.

Does anyone know how many we've sold for United and Wigan? I know that tickets have gone to general sales but just wondered how many we're taking?

erm yeah, so control them where they are at their weakest and give them free rein/leave ourselves exposed in the areas where their strengths lie.

You a skate mate or just educated from the Pompey book of logic? :?

I must be honest, it's not the best start to a posting career I have ever seen. Either you are a compete arse, on a wind-up or have completely mis-judged how to behave on a fans forum.

Just watching the FACup highlights, Man Utd looking on fire. Need to be at our very best all over the park to get anything from this game.

Posted at same time as your post above. I thought is was as much to do with Fulham standing off them if anything. Hopefully we'll press them more than that.

Watched a bit of the game live, Man Utd didn't have to be that good to beat Fulham today. Fulham were simply atrocious, no effort or work rate anywhere on the pitch.

They were lucky it was only 4.
