Dig Dig Posted 21 January, 2013 Posted 21 January, 2013 Obviously both superb but going forwards they seem to not take on the oppo fullback, even when they would have the beating of them. Instructions or just slight lack of confidence? Shaw has been improving going forwards to be fair but Clyne mostly freezes in the final third
trousers Posted 21 January, 2013 Posted 21 January, 2013 Tend to agree although they showed glimpses of what they're capable of vs Chelsea
Saint Garrett Posted 21 January, 2013 Posted 21 January, 2013 Thought they were both magnificent tonight. Clyne never stopped. Both top players who are only going to improve. Felt they had a bit more freedom to attack tonight.
Thedelldays Posted 21 January, 2013 Posted 21 January, 2013 Thought clyne was more reserved due to them being immense down their left
shurlock Posted 21 January, 2013 Posted 21 January, 2013 Future England LB and RB (Clyne's got a decent amount of assists, even though he admitted at Palace he had to work on his attacking game)
Saint Charlie Posted 21 January, 2013 Posted 21 January, 2013 Wish Clyne would back himself to beat the fullback occassionally.
Graffito Posted 21 January, 2013 Posted 21 January, 2013 Future England LB and RB Said so myself. Shaw has compared favourably in consecutive matches with Cole and Bains. Phenomenal player especially for 17 years old.
krissyboy31 Posted 21 January, 2013 Posted 21 January, 2013 I think that sometimes Puncheon doesn't help Clyne with the runs he makes. Several times tonight when Clyne wanted to take Baines on Puncheon took his space.

Several times tonight when Clyne wanted to take Baines on Puncheon took his space. May have been so in other matches but tonight I think Clyne was reluctant to get too far forward. Remember what happened at Goodison.
Saint Fan CaM Posted 21 January, 2013 Posted 21 January, 2013 Clyne matched Baines completely IMO. We've got the best two FB's in the Prem when their ages are taken into consideration.
CaneNero Posted 21 January, 2013 Posted 21 January, 2013 Shaw did take on the left side a few times but I do agree that Clyne was scared to dot he same down the right because he was up against pineaar and and baines who are no mugs and not short of pace so I don't blame him.
CanadaSaint Posted 21 January, 2013 Posted 21 January, 2013 I can understand the reluctance, and it probably comes more from the coaching staff than from them. If they push on towards the byline, that extra 10-20 yards would make it virtually impossible for them to get back to cover a counter attack. At this level those counters happen pretty damn quickly, and a FB pushing that far forward needs a reliable wide midfielder to drop in behind them. In time, and with improved fitness, I think we'll be seeing it more, but not yet.
WindsorSaint Posted 23 January, 2013 Posted 23 January, 2013 http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/21114372 Luke Shaw in Garth Crooks Team of the Week. LEFT-BACK - LUKE SHAW (SOUTHAMPTON) We've had Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, now Luke Shaw looks like he's the latest youngster fresh off the Southampton production line who is destined for great things. All credit to the Saints youth development team for producing such excellent English talent. As far as this weekend goes, the race for my team of the week was between between Luke Shaw, Leighton Baines and Ashley Cole - and Shaw gets the nod. Did you know? Southampton have lost only two of the 12 Premier League games Shaw has started, compared to eight of the 10 he hasn't.
um pahars Posted 23 January, 2013 Posted 23 January, 2013 If I had a small criticism of either it would be that they don't push on enough. However, they are both still learning their trade, getting used to the team and have time to develop that side of their game. It's also worth remembering they're playing in a struggling team, just above the relegation spots so the priority is probably defence over attack. Both look to have bags of ability, they just need some confidence, support and to have the security of the team being safe.
Saint Garrett Posted 23 January, 2013 Posted 23 January, 2013 I'm surprised how many people are saying they don't play high enough. They both played very high up the pitch on Monday.

I agree they defended high because Saints played a high line. I would say that's different from attacking down the flanks.
CB Saint Posted 23 January, 2013 Posted 23 January, 2013 Give them time. It wasn't that long ago we were being stuffed out of sight, so there will be an understandable reluctance to get too far forward. Also Shaw has only just got into the side, his first few games have been about whether or not he is good enough, now with increasing confidence he has started to venture forward. I expect to see Shaw continue to get forward much much more as the season goes on.
