Jimmy_D Posted 21 January, 2013 Share Posted 21 January, 2013 That was a good start for the new manager. Bar the dodgy 10 minute spell, always felt like we were more likely to win than lose that game, and that against a good Everton side.
Saint86 Posted 21 January, 2013 Share Posted 21 January, 2013 Err Chelsea? Ffs... Just put alpine on ignore. He talks crap. As for game. Liked us pressing more. Thought Everton were just a good west ham tbh. Like our pressing... But I just don't think we can do that for a full 90 game in, game out. We are a fit squad, but a small one. Boric is looking good. As is yoshi and his. Cork and morgan looking better than better. Personal note... Missed Nige and November looks good.
Crab Lungs Posted 21 January, 2013 Share Posted 21 January, 2013 Not sure I see it how many on here do. I didn't see a great display - I saw a slightly regressed one, football-wise. I thought the options/movement were lacking and despite creating some chances, we didn't look as polished as in recent weeks (don't know if that's to be expected or not after everything that has happened, but still). It was aggressive, it was passionate... but it wasn't much more than that. There was no guile and smooth interplay passing like under NA and we were relying on our technically gifted players to individually break the deadlock. Of course, when they were substituted in the 2nd half our threat subsided considerably. In the second half we played like the away team which was disappointing. We've had a busy period so maybe you can attribute that to tiredness. Additionally, MP has only had two training sessions to get his message across so obviously, the jury will be out for a while. FWIW, I watched a lot of Espanyol highlights over the weekend (sad, I know) and I have to say I wasn't very impressed at all. All seemed a bit "Steve McLaren" in the style of football, definitely not the "Barca style" championed by the PR machine. Still, it's a good point against a decent side. It's not bad, considering everything that's gone on.

Disappointed in Gaston: he really should do much more with his talent. Brussels Saint Posted 21 January, 2013 Share Posted 21 January, 2013 Whats clear, is we have some very good players at the club. Boruc, just about shaded MOTM for me over Morgan, who was immense (remember when he was considered our lightweight show pony!) Now one of the top defensive midfielders in the Prem and seems to have cut out the hollywood passing too. Thought Guly was good, industrious and effective. Good to hear a few "One Nigel Adkins", but great also that the crowd were behind the team and welcomed our new manager, thought we showed some class. Norm Posted 21 January, 2013 Share Posted 21 January, 2013 Just home to a hot cuppa. I enjoyed tonight's game and felt that we had a good 65 minutes being by far the better team. Frank's cousin Posted 21 January, 2013 Share Posted 21 January, 2013 we look good in a 4231 but would like to see morgan add a bit more creativity to his role (which will come with age/experience) as can see him devloping into a Schweinsteiger like general in the 2. with Lallana, Ramierez and punch as the 3, shaw and clyne, we have a nice looking side, but as others have remarked we still lack a bit of depth, although Guly had a good night. Problem is, real strngth in depth is always difficult to come by unless in the top 4 -6, where players will go to be part of a CL side even if only playing 20 games a season... no decent players want to do that at a lower half club, so we will need to be patient on that score. scotty Posted 21 January, 2013 Share Posted 21 January, 2013 I only saw 30-odd minutes of the first half, had to collect the Mrs from work, but thought we looked pretty impressive against an Everton side on probably the best streak of form they've ever had. Morgan looked terrific, and the pressing and closing down tactic was effective. Maybe it was a different viewpoint over the entire game and at the stadium, but Gaston looke pretty underwhelming from what little I saw. Negatives: only a point from a game we looked like winning during the the first 45. Positives: decent start for MP, a point against a very good side, no nonsense with white handkerchiefs, and another pint owed to me I reckon (I predicted 2-2, he reckoned 1-2 Everton.) Both wrong of course, but imo the pint goes to the result as opposed to the score
Lallana's Left Peg Posted 21 January, 2013 Share Posted 21 January, 2013 Got to learn to take our chances against the better teams, but overall it was a very positive performance. Enjoyed the tempo and the pressing but when Everton put two up front we didn't look very comfortable doing it (pressing) as we didn't protect the ball well enough when we got it back and they had dangerous players on the break. We have Boruc to thank for a point really, but then again we had plenty of chances first half so I don't feel like a point was undeserved at all in terms of overall performance. Bit bothered about Ramirez keep coming up with cramp. Love how much effort he is putting in but that needs sorting out as I don't think he should be getting cramp at this stage. Plenty of reasons to be positive about the future and it will be interesting to see how much is done over the next 5 days in Barcelona. Quite a game to try it all out in - Manchester United away next Wednesday. Could well be a game that Fonte and Lallana are back for in some capacity. In fact Lallana on the bench would be a nice boost but I suspect Wigan may be more realistic.
RedAndWhite91 Posted 21 January, 2013 Share Posted 21 January, 2013 It was a game of two halves... (Sorry for the cliché). First half we absolutely bossed the game, thought Ramirez playing in that CAM role suits him well, he was excellent in the first half in my opinion. Created a lot and passed when, before, in similar positions, I've seen him take one touch too many. 2nd half was a bit more even, credit to Boruc who I thought had a quality game. Another clean sheet is bound to do his confidence wonders, think he'll only improve. Have to stick with him for the remainder of the season. Guly had a great first half, can't fault him tonight. Think criticism of Cork is a bit unfair, him and Schneiderlin have developed a good understanding. Once again thought Luke Shaw was outstanding. All in all, wasn't confident tonight, so I'll take a draw against a good side. Saw us lose 3-1 at their place and we've come a long way. We could have won, I'm sure the new manager will take plenty of positives from that performance. Nice to hear a few "One Nigel Adkins" in appreciation, but at the same time it was good to see a positive atmosphere inside the ground, despite obvious grudges against Cortese. What exactly did you see to be dissapointed in tonight ? Sometimes he picked the ball up and had little options (only Lambert) ahead of him but that was about it, it should have been the wide men getting up to provide him with options. I imagine that Moyes positively crapped himself by half time snd obviously tried to get someone closer too him. Sorry Crabby btw, just dont agree with you tonight mate either, we looked so much more fluid up top, Rickie didnt drop so deep and so managed to get into the positions he is dangerous in far more often than he did during Adkins tenure, we are looking to get the ball into the box quicker too, resulting in more chances. The main set up is basically the same as Adkins set us up with some minor tweaks. Ramirez, why oh why has he not been playing there since the summer ? He just scared the crsp out of Everton, so so so good. MP has obviously tried to go down the Barca blueprint, try to keep possession and if you lose it work double hard to win it back, it worked first half but we started to run out of steam, more fitness work and better subs required VVV happy tonight

suewhistle Posted 22 January, 2013 Share Posted 22 January, 2013 Back from various bars, one of which was showing the match earlier: I can't tell you where because if I do Turkish will start bullying me, but the local commentators were pretty complimentary about Saint's first half perfomance. Previously I'd thought Everton were quite a good side, but they didn't show much in the first half - we didn't let them. Certainly they had to be better in the second, and so it proved. We'd all have liked three points, but in the circumstances a point is still useful, plus a morale booster against a pretty unambitious Everton. Why would they be like that? Perhaps we should credit our team for not letting them perform.
the_preacherman Posted 22 January, 2013 Share Posted 22 January, 2013 Just watched the highlights and Boruc's save from Anichebe was a point-saver; shame it couldn't have been a match-winning save, but it seem clear that we now have a first choice keeper for the remainder of the season. It's clear that, once our better players leave the pitch, we lack invention in the final quarter of matches; I can't remember a match-winning intervention in the final 20 of a match this season. We seem to succumb to the square ball curse; Cork fell into this trap tonight. In the first half of matches, where invention and creativity is higher, we do have the desire to rip into teams but, it seems, if we're not up by half-time, we struggle to put games to be in the second. It seems no surprise that the type of players we are (allegedly) being linked to are creative midfielders like Biglia and Verdu; if we could keep up the invention of our first-half displays for a full 90, we could, indeed should, be able to target at least another 20-23 points this season. Also, having Forren keep the ball rather than Jos hoofing the ball might allow us to launch more attacks across the course of the match.

Logical reaction. Few fans approached me saying they are not like other clubs, they will back the new manager but wanted to show their upset for seeing the old one go. Fair enough. In their chanting, there was not the impression that they wanted to make a big point to the club, that they were intending to start a struggle for power and influence, that they wanted to disrupt the team. Other fans seem to think that is their role in the club, but not in Southampton. And then they were entertained to a 0-0 draw that could have been 4-4! Good game with a very good 45 minutes from the home side and a second half where Everton could have won the game. What is new? The defensive line is high and the pressure when Southampton lose the ball is constant but that only lasted around 50 minutes, when the team couldn't continue doing the same physical effort. The local players were so upset by not taking advantage of the chances in the first half that one of the English ones even apologise to the new staff! Nothing to feel sorry for, it is a good start and now they should show they are not scared of Manchester United

niceandfriendly Posted 22 January, 2013 Share Posted 22 January, 2013 Oh, & if someone had offered me 5pts from the Villa, Chelsea & Everton games I'd have snatched their hand off. very much so, not a bad return at all from those fixtures. despite not being able to take one of our numerous chances in the first half i'm pretty happy with a point against a class Everton side (although we made them look ordinary in the first 45). there is something about our new gaffer, and i'm not quite sure what it is, but there is something about him that i really like. i think we're going to enjoy his time here. was good to see him talking to the players, rickie in particular, at length before the game. was a bit worried when he was appointed at his lack of english, but he can clearly understand a lot and speak a fair amount. won't be too long i reckon until he is doing interviews in english. on to those utter c*nts man utd. let's go there with positivity and belief that we can take something. pingwing Posted 22 January, 2013 Share Posted 22 January, 2013 (edited) Overall a good performance, not sure what MP has had to say yet (not really accessible like Adkins was) but from the first half he seemed to have a much better idea of how an attacking for in the formation should work, which really benefited Gaston, Lambert and most importantly Guly. First time in a while all 3 really seemed to have great ideas of where to be to create and nearly score. It was ruined by Punch forgetting where he should be and being bloody average. My thoughts on managerial style, new guy can get talented players to display what they have when Adkins had a nack of getting sensible performances out of average players (only rational way Punch can be in the form of his life till a new manager turns up and suddenly needs replacing again). Second half we showed we don't have the depth to play properly and cannot deal with a team who defend super deep and have some monster charging about the pitch everywhere. We need a couple of new players, well Punch challenger and Lallana back will be enough really. No idea why Fellani is allowed to play though, technically a great player, but he's a massive, dirty thug that should have been sent off for diving he went down so quickly. Frustrating that no-one tried to bait him and fall a lot around him as that seems to be the only answer. Finally Boruc just has to be no.1 now, really starting to get his eye back in for the game and I really like having a keeper that isn't beaten at the near post every time. That's nice. A final ask is to not really milk the Nigel Adkins thing, nice we did it today but that really should be it now. New bloke needs a chance and banging on about Adkins didn't really seem to give the team the lift they needed (it gave Everton that 10 min spell where we couldn't get out of our own box). Also Steve De Ridder is really really poor, why we bother with him and not Callum Chambers (or someone else out of the academy) is beyond me. Should be the only player in the league with a pass completion rate of less than 10% All in all happy with a point from the team in 5th! Just have a bit of work to do to get everyone taking chances, having the right depth in the squad and the right step forward now. SaintJackoInHurworth Posted 22 January, 2013 Share Posted 22 January, 2013 I can't believe there are some people suggesting that we were nearly beaten and fortunate to get a draw. We completely dominated the first half (all of the TV highlights were Saints chances!) and should have been 2-0 up at least by half time - credit to Everton's defence and keeper for keeping them in it. Yes, there were 2 chances that Everton should have scored - but apart from that they barely had a shot on goal. They had a period of about 20 minutes at the start of the second half where they crowded the midfield and stifled our attempts to get forward - the result of a great tactical shift by Moyes rather than Saints getting tired (though the half time break had also possibly broken our momentum). During that period they grew in confidence and got the aforementioned chances. However, as the 2nd half wore on, we came back into the game and had as much of the ball as them if not a little more. Indeed, I would venture to suggest that we ended the game the stronger side. The game highlighted what we already knew - that without Lallana we lack options down the left hand side - with the exception of Shaw (who was again excellent!). It would be good to bring in someone who can play on either flank and can provide a better option than Guly. However, at the same time, I am wary of us doing anything that might undermine the confidence of Lallana who is a vital player for us. As for those who suggest that Ramirez is not doing the business, you clearly need to watch more of the game and note who it is that is combining with the other players to create many of our chances! Similarly, those who want to criticise Puncheon really are living in the past - this season (including tonight) he has been brilliant for us. All round it was a great performance. I hope that Ramirez's injury is not too serious and I also hope that Lallana and Forren will both soon be match fit.
dubai_phil Posted 22 January, 2013 Share Posted 22 January, 2013 Just a comment about the second half. For the last 15 minutes or so around 8 local lads gradually moved closer to the telly and ended watching the last 10 or so sitting with us. There were as many Oohs and Aaahs and COME ONS from them as from us as we tried to break them down with the last minute corners and save from Boruc. The game finished and they simply turned and said - Wow - Southampton - Very Good. Exactly the same reaction from a couple of huys in the bar in Thailand after the Villa game. Nice to get a clean sheet (and I'm not talking about Puncheon) Need to make more of corners - no point in getting them unless we score now and again. Thecorners are good - its what is happening in the middle that concerns me a bit. Too early to say whether the improvement was down to MP. I like to think if Alpine had been made manager they players would still have put an extra effort in. Onthin he did change though was chasing balls down - particularly back passes to the keeper and I lost count of the number of times that resulted in us getting possession back
Nexstar Posted 22 January, 2013 Share Posted 22 January, 2013 Good solid performance and a decent point against a top side. My main point of criticism was that our balls into the box were very poor. The majority of corners and crosses didn't find a Saints player. When they did, a chance was created and Lambert should certainly have had at least one. Better deliveries and we might have grabbed all 3 points. Very pleased Boruc has found his form, it was about time we had a rock in goal this season. Cabrone Posted 22 January, 2013 Share Posted 22 January, 2013 That was a decent point well earned. Relieved that the team didn't have a melt down out there against tough opposition. Of the outfield players Shaw, Schneiderlin and Cork stood out for me. Would like to see the midfield start playing balls through the channels to Jay Rod as that is where he is dangerous. Boruc was probably my MoM, was quiet for large parts of the game but when called upon did the routine stuff perfectly well and made some great saves too. Apart from the sacking of NA his exclusion for so long is the biggest mystery of the season as he's already earnt us valuable points. All in all that was very reassuring.
