Frank's cousin Posted 21 January, 2013 Share Posted 21 January, 2013 Agree- I had no problem with Pards firing (said so at the time as I felt we had become too one-dimensional and predictable under him). I do have a problem with this decision -as much from a footballing perspective as ethically. The problem is that Cortese hasn't suffered any real setback to date which in his view (and wrongly IMO) vindicates his more bizarre decisions. Of course, he may just have been lucky -a bloodied nose time to time might serve as a decent reality check and remind him of his fallibility. This assumes though...and there are naturally a lot od assumption on here... that NC a 'non football' man is making all these decsions unilaterally based on his own experience alone - I would suggest that the plan/strategy long term goal is not something dreamed up alone, but a culmination of ideas from various footballing experts who will have had input. We know Strachan was consulted for example when they first arrived. You dont get where he got to in business by not seeking out thos ewith experience and seeking their advice - My guess is that because he looks to be following a continental model, different to what the establishment in the prem and media consider 'right' form the English game, he is getting more stick about it. shurlock Posted 21 January, 2013 Share Posted 21 January, 2013 NO idea' date=' but that is what they are there fore to support a resolution between their members and clubs in these cases - so it is still a valid point anyway - matters not who instigated the discussions, only taht both parties were willing and able to find a solution.[/quote'] The punch holdout was part Adkins, part Cortese. It stemmed back to AoC being preferred and a belief that Punch wasn't pulling his weight defensively. There were also stories that Punch would arrive late for training which was the last straw for Adkins. Having been shipped out on loan, it was then Cortese who played hardball over Punch's future, putting potential suitors off as he tried to recoup as much of the £1m we had spent on him (and frankly some of the offers were pretty derisory). And then the club had a change of heart -maybe because we had failed to secure a winger in last January's window. Which is to say perhaps both NA and NC were justified in the stance they took -regardless how well punch is playing now.

Puncheon wasn't performing and didn't deserve his place at the time. It was him who founced off in a strop. Credit where it's due to Cortese for playing hardball over it. Saint George Posted 21 January, 2013 Share Posted 21 January, 2013 I don't think Cortese's done much wrong to date....The man's a 'winner' and he wants Southampton FC to be 'winners'.....Winners and ruthlesness often go hand in hand.....Just look at another notable winner in soccer....Just Imagine if Sir Alex Ferguson had been CEO of Southampton Football Club over the last 3 years....Does anyone believe he would have done anything much different to Cortese?
